It's been a while since the thread has been up, eh? Suika Fortress Dev. Anon here to say that I'm still working away at converting the project for the latest DF, but have since then also taken up some side ventures: such as attempting to convert a few Touhou Epic civs in Civilization IV to be compatable with C2C.

This is the result of an entire waking day having to deal with the disorganized messes of code that are translated Jojisi and C2C version 35; the thing that perhaps took the most time was attempting to convert Cirno's flag to work with C2C's reading format, and eventually I just decided to say screw it and opted to build another instead.

Things are still rough around the edges, but for now the civ seems to be playable, which is good enough for something made in a day, random crashes due to buggy animal coding inherent in the mod nonewithstanding (thanks SO for removing all the assets of the custom civs, making the int. screen scream at me every time I attempt to boot up the game from missing models, but still not rigging half the animals properly.)

Right, might as well give an update on DF for the day, though to be frank, not much that is easily visually quantifiable aside from a few additional sprites has been done: most of it is trying to get a feel for the faries' and Suikas' playstiles while adding new things in between, like more youkai (which are tricky because most of them require fairly complex reactions in order to properly simulate them) and robots. In addition, cyborgs have been added as another monster type; they infrequently appear in evil biomes, and they're similar to robots staticially but also count as living creatures, which allows them to be undead for extra fun (robo-Cheetahs can be tamed if standard guard dogs aren't doing it for you)!

The Factory is more or less complete as a faction, and all that needs to be added for the initial alpha release are the Redcaps to cap of the villians gallery, though I'll probably add at least one more civilized youkai type to give thieving fairy civs a more reliable trading partner. The biggest hurdle to release is writing a guide for how the fairies play and more importantly how to instruct first-timers of the basics of the game.

Testing C2C more to get bearings on just how much has changed in the past to versions, and let me tell you that merging units together into bigger units is one hell of a drug.

Anyways, any suggestions for uniques? C2C is special in that every civilization that appears in the game (and a couple who don't) each have a researchable culture that gives you the units, so I might as well give the GFA one as well in order to make it seem less jarring. A building, a unit, and two hero units.

Another quick update on the C2C modmod, a bit not one visually quantifiable: I've finally gotten Touhou sound effects to work for fairy units, including giving them the actual bullet shooting sound so they don't sound like 75 mm cannons like they did in Epic.

Now, to get the bullets' visual effects working...

On an aside, I gave Cirno three distinct era musics like everyone else: the early era is a simple remix of her theme done using the midi and running it through anvil to both simplyfy it and add banjos. Mid era is the slightly-off sounding Epic default track, and late era is the direct version of Beloved Tomboyish Daughter.

I've also been experimenting with reskinning some units in order to give Lady C. some more visual distinction: This for instance, is for the swordsman (in spite of what the filename might tell you).

It wasn't the feature overload per se. I really like Pie's Ancient Europe and FFH2 and CCV. It just felt like RoM's features were all skin-deep, and were just tacked on with little consideration for how they should affect one another to create an organic, well-balanced game. It night have gotten better since then, but at the time it felt like an amateur compilation mod.

Lucky for you, they chopped off a load of the superfluous parts of the game so C2C isn't as bloated as before after hundreds of complaints of the game crashing due to memory issues; the C2C of today is less than half the size of v30. Granted, early game is still drugery (animals, animals everywhere), and there are still far, far too many more buildings then you'll ever want to build cluttering up the construction screen, but the game has been streamlined significantly, and no longer takes half an hour to boot up, while a bunch of the pointless, dead-end units that didn't really belong to a line and were markably inferior to everything else ("Hand Rams", anyone?) were axed as well. Still not 100% balanced, and the recent army mechanics are a bit on the wonky side, and as seen here, the AI seems pretty dumb when it comes to expanding early game, but all in all, it's still one of the best mods out there if I say so myself.

As to how RoM is faring, I haven't kept up to date with it in years: CoC has certainly improved past the last time I checked it, but I wouldn't know exactly if it tried something similar.

Though, if you're a crazy person like me and like to re-add all the civilizations that the latest patch removed, you'll run into some stability issues because civ simply wasn't meant to have possibly 100 different civs spawn in the game at once, though having hundreds of nations spawn and die, some of them without you even knowing they once existed is part of what adds to the game's charm.

Anybody thought of visualizing the map of Gensokyo for fangames or such?

Gensokyo has many other "worlds/dimensions" like Heaven, Hell, Hakugyokurou, Makai... How can you fit all of that on a flat map? Especially when all the worlds should be linked together (teleportation is not in the game engine)

I am frustrated thinking of a way to fit all of Gensokyo in 1 flat map. Some games and official works contradict each other, so the placement of some landmarks is really troubling.

Complaints aside, how would this map fare for a "flat" representation of Gensokyo? As mentioned earlier, teleportation is not possible, so I crammed everything together.

I made this based on speculation of the routes that could've been taken by the heroines (specifically Reimu) in the main games.

This is quite nice, but it isn't very right for the Hakurei Shrine to be right in the center when it's mentioned multiple times to be on the edge of Gensokyo right over the Hakurei Border.

Touhou Puppet Dance did a very nice interpretation of Gensokyo's map so you might want to check it.

As a note, I don't think the Underground needs to cover a large route, they were mostly going down at the time.

I made this map before I read WaHH, and I didn't know that the Hakurei Shrine was literally on the eastern edge of Gensokyo.

My main problem is adding the newhus to the current roster. Most of them might just end up as ancillary, while the rabbits and Sagume become playable.

I'm planning to create 3d leaderscenes for touhous in Civ V, which I'll just use for myself. I don't know how the hell do I replace the still pictures with the animations, though, so help appreciated.

I really, really want to update Cirno's civ to be a bit less secondaryish (Cirno's a foolish tomboy, but she isn't that much of a careless jerk) and add all the fairy army stuff from the newest game into. Maybe fix the spring herald to actually use the fairy model from Civ IV and give her some events while I'm at it. Perhaps even a couple additional model skins.

Can't help you much though, as modding Civ V has been a confusing process for me; it's not just type and plug in XML files like Civ IV is, and the only person that seems to be competent in the field that hasn't used it to make lewds of Catherine is that guy that did Hitler.

DF/Civ IV anon present to inform you all that I am now attempting to try my hand at modeling new models to fill in the extra gunpowder units introduced by the mod: through lazily splicing together the existing fairy models of course! Pictured here is I think the main infantry fairy with her twin-tails replaced with Cirno's ribbon. The skin is not yet updated, so it's the same color as her hair, but eh, progress?

Oh, and the amount of minor errors in Suika Fortress that are corrected in-game by the game itself are making it difficult to find actual game breaking glitches, but it seems each time I whack one another pops up in its place: I might have to realease it to the Bay 12 sometime soon in its highly volatile experimental state; I know for a fact there's at least one modder there more intelligent at the stuff them myself who's got my back, and I'm getting bogged down at a rate that it would likely never get finished alone.

Of course, you'll all get first pickings still as soon as I write down the guide to the fairies.

Last I checked, Touhou Wiki's v1.13 eu mirror is still functional, as is its spotty translation patch. I should know, having had to download it multiple times after accidently scrambling my copy once dissecting it.

In other news, my last save through the test run corrupted itself when it crashed in the middle of saving, and the game has gotten bloated to the point that it crashes in between each turn, so said save is written as bust; though I've likely gleaned all the information needed from it anyway. I've taken the time to update to the latest version of C&C, and lul and behold, someone removed the pointers to half of the european unit models (I HOPE they were just redunand pointers and they didn't remove the models completely - I've had a headache trying to fix that sort of thing in the past), and didn't document /what/ exactly they removed. Fun.

My main problem with my game, even if I could develop it, is that it would involve ignoring:

I just love the idea of Touhous in jet fighters because I got into Touhou and Ace Combat games at the same time so the two concepts are linked in my mind because I'm super fucking autistic. Even the plot of my game is similar to Ace Combat Zero's plot, just set during Mystic Square.

Basically, the gimmick of the game was that boss fights were struggles to maintain a lock on. You could only seriously damage bosses when locked on. There would be other aircraft that could disrupt lock ons, or in the case for the Yuki/Mai fight, you'd still be getting shot at. In Alice's fight, her plane would start launching unmanned drones that work like the regular enemies (Just fly at you shooting and don't come back if they pass.)

Subweapons are used when you have a lock on, and work the same as bombs. Countermeasures are also bombs, but can only be used if an enemy has already fired a missile at you. Throughout the levels, you shoot down bombers and enemy squadrons, which get you subweapon shots and countermeasures respectively. Subweapon shots are much rarer, but still would help in certain fights where having a lock on still means you're getting shot at.

The objectives are just used to occupy the lower part of the screen. You don't actually have to target things like ground targets or factories or stuff like that.

Yeah, I'm not a modeler: after messing with meshes, verticies, an UV mapping in order to change around one of the models to have a pony tail for variety, it caused civ's engine to crap itself inspite of it working fine in-editor (similar issue to the aardvark: the vertices seem to be all over the place). I'm only guessing it has something to do with the fact that the new model doesn't quite match up with the old one (I also changed the hair and added ears).

For now, I'll just cut my losses and go back to the less interesting hair: Blender is a scary place.

Indeed: it started with me playing some old Civ in order to cool off a bit after spending weeks trying to unravel some of the glaring bugs in SF, but later I got roped into wondering how much easier modding Civ IV is compared to V, and the anser is: much easier, though also much more confusing as many aspects of it work in mysterious ways optimized for machines built back in 05', and as such finding some compatable programs was a bit of a pain.

To answer the question on the model I was working on:

The triangle count (which it is made out of: I use polys because I'm not versed in the realms of /3/ and have not modeled with anything more complex than CAD and Google Solid Works) is 6807, while the vertice count is 5700: quite high for a game like Civ IV (in comparison, the basic tank model has 615 vertices and 473 triangles), but still about half of the model it originated from: it's actually a slightly modified, reskinned version of the doll model that hovers next to Medicine.

Most of the other fairy models are around this range as well, and are all high poly and rather stiffly animated, but lamebryo seems to handle even sixty of them rendered on-screen at once with little fuss: it's C2C itself which often leads to crashes due to someone making dirty code and not cleaning it up in between revisions before submitting it: the current revision I got kept crashing on the leader info screen because somebody omittited the Mugals to save space in spite of the fact that C2C's base code (which was burried deep enough that I couldn't actually find what it was referring to) required them as one of the "base" civ lineups (that is, not part of the module selection and built into the mod internally.)

I'm manipulating the models currently using NifScope alone: it's a model viewer for Gamebryo meant to do things such as add sounds and effects to animations with some secondary UV and model editing capabilities, but it's preferable to using Blender when I don't have to use it: Blender is installed, but I don't like touching it because of the horrid UI. I was thinking of a game that mixed together different levels of the gameplay of Highly Responsive to Prayers, the Phantasmagoria games, and traditional Danmaku gameplay together into a single game, with the basic plot being that Gensokyo has become a totalitarian nightmare of a realm, and it's up to an outsider (which might or might not be Maribel/Yukari's direct descendant) to save it.

How feasible does this sound?

Yeah, the plot was more of an excuse for the game as opposed to the game being an excuse for the plot: basically, the two options are that either Yukari conscripted one of her dimensional doubles in order to take her place while she explored the wider world and said alternate Yukari goes mad with power and revolts, deciding to use Gensokyo (which in her PoV is just a copy) as her personal playground, or that the Lunarians successfully manage to annex it and are in the process of purifying it: either way, Reimu is captured and brainwashed and Yukari is in hiding (to get around the fact either of them would otherwise be able to fix the plot with judicious use of their powers before it started), while the rest of the 2hu cast is also in hiding, part of the new regime, or ded (though in the last case, nobody is actually confirmed).

The character is an outsider in order to make them modular; the first part of the game would be them getting captured and forced to battle in a lethal combination of the above spellcard games in an arena before they escape for the third act in order to find Yukari, aided in said escape by probably Marisa. The character could be Maribel herself, if using someone generic risks becoming a donut steel.
