Oh, it was "mo" and not "ma." it really sounds like she's saying hitamaji aoi wa to me, even though I figured out everything but what "ma" was( that is, I was stuck as 'hito?ma?ji')

I'm guessing you're American and hence have huge ambiguity between A and O sounds.

The generic 'foreign A' used by Americans sounds more like オ than ア, so it would be expected that you'd interpret them as such when the word isn't clear.

Almost all Americans who haven't got sufficient experience in pronunciation sound like they're saying モンガ, for instance. Most other languages and English dialects won't have such a problem because there already exists a sound closer to ア in them and that is used instead.
