I'm not OP, but I have lived a quasi-hikki life for the past 2 or so years and have been enjoying it enough that I would like to take it further and stop going to work. Maybe there's a fundamental misunderstanding in my conception of what this is, but I just want to train, smoke and go out at wee hours for bike rides. I don't think that outward socializing will provide anything for me given that I already have a small circle of people in my local area with whom I can relate deeply. Not to mention that I resent the presence of most everyone outside that circle.

I make music and sound effects, mostly for games. I'm not super popular yet, but I make enough money to allow me to stay a hikikomori and help my family, so that's okay. The curve from bedroom musician to professional was pretty awful, and I wouldn't advise anyone to try it unless they have another source of income until they are losing money by not dedicating themselves to music full time.

It's also worth noting you're always working. By no means a stress-free job, almost as far from that as possible and you have to deal with different people all the time. It's only good if you're a hikikomori that hates going outside but can interact directly with people, because discussing references and intentions with clients is the name of the game.

Living in denver, i was a hikki for 1.5 years. Lived with my parents and only went out to buy takeout and beer, or the 40 minute walk my father would force me to go out for. That's how i survived, by going on a walk.

I was a hikki for 5 years, best time of my life. There were feelings of guilt, but my life was much better then. I was able to just be myself and take it easy.
Now I am constantly stressed and unhappy.

So how do you "hikkis" actually find the motivation to do productive things from your rooms? Does everything not feel pointless when you're cutting yourself off from society?

I am a workaholic, was one even before being a NEET. You don't need to be motivated when work is a huge part of you and not doing something is maddening.

I went on 4 years as a shut-in, I don't think I would recommend it to anyone.

No matter what people in this thread say, humans are social in nature, and you need that, and fresh air and exercise to be happy. You can have much lower demands in these than other people, but you still need it naturally.

The idealization of being a shut-in like you see in anime is not really helping anyone, and the truNEET shit you see posted all the time is quite bad.

Being a NEET isn't easy. I'd get bored as fuck during summer vacation as a kid, even when I was full blown WoW addict doing hardcore progression raiding.

I want to look qt, so I need to buy expensive clothes at least once in a while and I like fancy gadgets so that costs money too. Also, I take annual vacations to Japan/comiket so I don't want to let go of that either.

I feel the best when I'm alone. People usually piss me off and it's mostly because of small things. I can go outside and not sperg out, behave myself but it'll always be me forcing myself and it usually has a pretty decent effect on my mental health.
Going out for groceries is fine though, at least you don't have to talk to anyone.

been truhikki for 2 years now living with my mom (who luckily is very caring and understanding). recently started the long and arduous process of applying for disability in the US citing my various mental disorders but theres no guarantee

hey, if you want to live a life of minimal social interaction and still earn money to survive, I have done a few things in the past that worked for me.

1) I worked for a publishing company, they published children's books, and I worked as an editor. It actually paid well and due to the nature of my work I didn't actually have to go anywhere. Then again, I have a uni degree. Without that I'm not sure I would have been hired.

2) I worked for a pizza delivery service from home. I would take calls on my own phone and enter orders in online to the main system. One could do that job from home and you don't need a degree. Then again, you have to talk to people on the phone...

3) Right now I work as a night security guard. I work 40 hrs/week, 5x 8hr shifts. In an 8 hr shift I do about 1 hr of work. The other 7 I just play vidya and look at porn.
