I saw one super drunk military guy screaming at and threatening some random Japanese guy on the train during New Years. That was bad.
It's well known that foreigners are less likely to commit crime than Japanese people. Also consider that a foreigner has their entire life at risk, but your average crime between Japanese people will be swept under the rug.

There's nothing wrong with doing otaku things in Japan. If anything, all you weeaboos should aspire to it. When you rely on sub-par fan translations, you will never get the full experience. Unless you've lived in Japan, you will miss out on a lot of references to everyday life here.

It's okay to be interested in Japan. The problem is the people that say they're interested in Japan are often not interested in Japan but obsessed with an ideal they have in their head. So much so that they start to wish they were Japanese and forsake their own heritage. Well we probably just have a different way of thinking. The way I see it since the day I was born I was provided for by my nation be it through school, medical care or what have you. So whether I asked for it or not there is a debt that I must pay back to my nation. It is not simply patriotism but a duty.

That said I son't see anything wrong with taking pride in your nation. It's inspiring to read about the great things my countrymen have done and makes me want to be great too however unlikely that is and I hope it inspires the rest of my nation to keep us striving to the top. By parent culture I meant your original culture not literally your parent's culture or the overriding culture. I'm not ashamed to admit it, I think Japan is the most beautiful and fascinating country on Earth, if other people don't get it then it's their loss and I frankly just don't care what they think.

The Earth has many different places and cultures, many of them are beautiful and fascinating as well, but there's nothing quite like Japan and I don't see why that's such a hard concept for people to grasp, if you were to take a random assortment of anything, it could be movies, it could be songs, it could be books, would there not be one of those things that would stand out from the others? The best book, the best song, the best movie, why should countries and cultures be any different? why wouldn't there be one that's the "best" or at least the most interesting?

Now obviously, as with any hobby, whether it's Star Wars fandom or stamp collecting, you can take it too far to an obnoxious and irritating degree, but that's not me, I don't force my obsession down anyone's throats if I know they don't care, I don't walk around pretending I'm in Japan when I'm not, I mainly just keep it to myself.

And as for non-Japanese living in Japan, well as in any situation a little bit of manners goes a long way, that's true whether you're an Otaku living in Japan or not, you should always be on your best behavior no matter where you are.

Japan has some really good directors. Or had. Their modern cinema seems to be complete garbage and mostly focused on low budget productions. Not going to lie, that really pisses me off. However, I'm real scared about how I'll survive over there. Accomodation isn't an issue but will I even be able to get to a legible level of Japanese by January next year?
