Trying to learn to draw.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was a terrible book that barely helped at all; none of the exercises worked. I don't know why it's recommended so much.

Keys to Drawing seems much better.

One day I will draw animes.

You can read the whole Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and do all the exercises in a few days, less than a week... You are going to need a lot of practice too, but it's a great start or refresher. I recommend giving it a try to everyone. The techniques and the theory are very helpful, if you approach them with an open mind and try to understand and apply the theory. If you expect to do the exercises without thinking and end up suddenly knowing how to draw, that is not going to happen. It's all about training the brain to switch into a different mode. Afterwards you are still going to need a lot of practice and skill learning, other books, other teachers, but you'll go with a solid foundation on how to approach drawing.
It talks about lots of thing that you might have not realized by yourself. All the symbolic drawing vs drawing the stuff you are actually seeing, that kind of thing was amazing to learn about and apply.
Maybe you are a genius and already realized everything the book points out, but for me it showed me a lot of things that are there but are not apparent. It's a great analysis about the basics of learning to draw. It's also very motivating because it describes the patterns of why people who are learning to draw get frustrated, and you can apply those to yourself and know exactly where you are. In my opinion it's great to have a solid understanding on how drawing works, better than just throwing yourself blindly into drawing things over and over and having faith some day it will all just click (great recipe for frustration).
Read reviews around too, most people absolutely loved it and I highly doubt it's Betty Edwards herself sockpuppeting.
Additionally, the exercises are really fun in my opinion. I had a blast drawing my childhood landscape for example, and well, in the end a huge part of why I draw is to have fun.

PS: it's critical to actually read and understand all the text in the book. It's not just an exercise book, it's theory.

And to add something else... Loomis is good, but just like all things in 4chan, someone comes up with a long pastebin and bam, there's now only one good way of doing something. Only use Loomis, only use Starting Strength, only use Tae Kim, only use this lube, etc
It's good to have a reference, but the 4chan approach of "just do this one" like there is going to be a one size fits all resource that is also vastly superior to everything is just delusional. It worked great for someone, that's good. But the more I learn about learning the more wary I am of 4chan monolithic approaches. Just investigate yourself and read a lot of different resources and try different approaches, because everyone learns in different ways.
Let's just be bluntly honest: 4chan spoonfeeding guides might contain a couple good resources, but they're usually shit and just one anon opinion. 4chan is usually more informed than most sites, but that still doesn't mean that anything that is popular here is going to be the holy grail. The key is finding what works for you.

This annoyed me because I didn't have one. The author acted so confident in the fact that everyone would recall exactly what this was meant to be that they didn't even account for the possibility that it might not be known.

The head is connected way off centre, or the neck is strained at an impossible angle.

The shoulder blade is non-existent - the arm is just stuck to the body.

The arms are too short.

The left breast is connected almost on the arm pit. The right breast is connected almost between the collar bones.

Everything below the abdomen seems reasonable.

Here. Have some more eyes/hair colours too.

Added: the 8 skin colours you see in the first pic, 2 hair colours (light red, a new light brown that's more saturated), 4 eye colours (grey, hazel, black, cyan - although cyan I'm thining of leaving as only for some kind of 'supernatural' lolis - I"m not sure. Maybe you'll have to use some artifact on certain lolis to bring it out in their offspring - I don't know. It's not going to occur naturally in the populace of the town though. I'll likely have people contain the recessive gene for it, but required the player to breed them together in some way to produce it)

Hmm.. what if the player has it, and a couple lolis in the town have it, and he has to breed them to produce it? Then I'd just have to give the player some way to find lolis that have it.

Maybe the lolis with it all attend some secret forest ritual on certain days of the month? Then I could put info about it on the internal internet of the game in order to guide the player about it.

>>13799662

Those aren't currently in there. I guess you could just pretend either hispanic (since that's partially native, albeit south american, not north) or maybe tropical.

They're a pretty negligible minority in most places so I didn't feel the need to put them in this early on in development. I mean the towns only have like 100 people or something, so there would only be like 1 of them per town, and they wouldn't look too different from a couple of the other pools....

I mean all the pools do is give the probability for a given gene to be dominant vs recessive. That's all they do. (Well, and nationality(original ethnicity) gives a list of first/last names to generate from).

>> No.13799697

Try the moe idol book. Also look at yourself for reference. When I was first learning anatomy, it was easier for me to draw muscly men with detailed anatomy or fat women than it is for me to draw cute lolis, but now I am good with both. I personally suggest looking at real photos of people in tight clothes or in say a tank and shorts. Maybe practice porpotions one day and arm anatomy the next. Draw from the book and then draw from a picture. I found that doing both made it easier to understand either one. Now I'm pretty good with it, I'm just learning how to do things in perspective, like a girl holding her hand out in front, or something like that. I hate when people say "I'm not going to study drawing real people because I am learning to draw anime" because they are not drawing "anime," they are drawing a boy or girl. You know? Anyways. Don't worry I understand. I don't have problems with copying from 3D. I used to collect pictures of adult females but I've not copied many of them so I could go back to that as well. I have tried Loomis once but I never really got it. I then tried the copying from 3D models I was talking about before and I liked that better but I still had no improvement. It's almost like she doesn't have much tone in her skin.. she looks really pale.
I hope to see another drawing of Asuka and see improvement.

If you don't get one with a screen display on the surface (Cintiq, expensive as hell) don't get a large one. If you have no tablet yet or don't travel a LOT don't get a small one.
So get medium sized, it's the sweet spot.
If you want to pay less buy a Wacom Intuos Pen (& Touch?) medium size, costs like €150.
If you want to pay more buy an Wacom Intuos Pro Medium size, costs €300.

Well, might as well request this week.

To start off, about the use of arpeggiation -- it sounds more like you got that from wanwan or senpi than from ZUN (especially considering the instruments used immediately after; sounds a lot like them). Not that it sounds bad here, but it's often needlessly harsh and "look at all my arpeggios guys", and is often overused amongst ZUN-style artists to make up for a harmony (and sometimes a melody...) or just to try and make it sound "extreme". It might just come down to taste whether people like that sound or not, but in my opinion it's a more juvenile-y and tacky option. I think you can do better, for whatever it's worth.

In comparison, the undertone stuff you pull off starting at 0:38 is much more subtle and consequentially better for it. Sounds really good. Same with the extra little hits at 1:10 (which then get overwhelmed by arpeggios).

I suggest maybe switching up the trumpet for something slightly different on one of the runs, either before or after the solo (probably before). It keeps things fresh and clearly delineates the sections of the song.

Melody at 1:31 and on in the "solo" section needs to be a bit clearer and more defined. I can't immediately tell whether instrument selection is playing a role or if some extra post-processing to separate channels needs to be done to achieve that. Again, already good, but I think it could be better.

The combination at 2:47 is solid as fuck. Both transition to 2:20 and the transition to the loop are a tad jarring, though, you should want to ease in a bit more.

Really good shit, overall. As a guy who analyzes ZUN composition way too much and is often disappointed with imitation artists, this is pretty impressive. I also wasn't expecting you to have the hardware down, which helps a ton.

>> No.13839105

>>13838621
Thank you for your detailed criticism, i appreciate it, i completely agree with what you said about the arpeggios, i usually don't use them a lot, but i made an exception for this song because i wanted it to sound more "extreme" like you said. I think i can do better than that as well honestly.
>>13838509
I started out 3 years ago by getting FL Studio and messing around with general MIDI, i made terrible ear raping song after terrible ear raping song, and eventually, i got the SD-90 MIDI sound module, i continued making terrible song after terrible song until they became slightly less terrible, rinse and repeat.

Yes? You don't need to 1cc the games or know the original Japanese text to draw them, unless you're like going to draw a fan comic or something

Never heard of the translations being bad, but it's still probably more accurate than using fan works for research. I guess if you're that insecure you can read all the print works and official manager until you,re comfortable enough

Retarded fantasies are retarded fantasies, but I mean the minor dumb shit like Cirno unable to tolerate heat(melting) or with tiny, detached wings, Flandre's wing diamonds as a rainbow, Orin with a green dress, etc. The stuff that people pick up from drawing art based on other people's are instead of the games.

In Yukari's case, it's more about how her dress looks(not with a ridiculous low cut) than what she's packing.

I am amazed. This is right up my alley, except that I (obviously) take a Bob Ross approach to my paintings. It's more about relaxing and a sort of meditational, calming and therapeutic approach to painting. I know I'll never be as good as those that have been practicing for years but it's amazing how they can transform a dull photograph into a mystical scene that depicts real life as seen with human eyes that is not always able to be captured with a photograph.

I am on the first chapter. Great vocabulary. For some reason I want this to go somewhere other than 2hu because it seems like the story could easily get a lot more dark and emotional. We'll see. I like the main character that you have set up, it's very relatable to the hikikomori types. I just like almost everything about this story so far. It's something I would actually purchase from a book store to take home and read more.

Well thank you very much.
It is not really a Touhou related story, it only references Touhou.
As for the story getting dark and emotional, you may have picked up on a motif I'm going for where the story juxtaposes poor slumliving with a NEET against a high, advanced class.
Rest assured I am not done making the MC's life a living hell. Lumi is the one light in his life at the moment, he is otherwise surrounded by ugliness.

In fact, I do.

There is an infinite learning curve to classical instrument music playing that also applies to digital software. That moment when a few simple notes played the right way sounds luxurious, is diminished by higher level symphonic chord structure. Trying to tie in classical elements as imagined by classical composers into mashup core percussion. I have a long way to go.

Okay. Imagine a darkly lit coffee room that also serves absinthe. It's 3 PM but it really feels like it is 3 AM because time doesn't matter. There are candelabras literally everywhere, and books; an endless supply of books with pages stained yellow with the passage of time. There's an uncharacteristic stage, and some sad soul has set up shop there with a MIDI controller, a guitar, a djembe, and a microphone. He bleeds out pathetic verses about loneliness, existential anguish, and a tear falls when he sings about hope for the future despite an abysmal outlook. You get so depressed that you leave, like everyone else does, to somewhere happier. There you meet Trevor Something and other revival musical outfits. That's right. It feels like ecstasy and reuniting with a long lost friend. The moment starts to fade but you wanted what you had to last forever so you move on to Soundcloud to explore everything new from 2015, where fresh hot music is stuffed in your pig face twenty four seven until you feel as though you are going to have a brain aneurysm. That's kindof how I feel about music. Sometimes I just want quit and never play again.

It's difficult to incorporate that dimly-lit absinthe symphonious music with a really intense percussion, it just doesn't work but that's what I want to do. I'll make it work somehow. So far it seems I would be better off just writing the melodic notes in with a mouse instead of playing keys since everything has to be split-second perfect or it will sound terrible. We'll see. And yes, simple notes combined with luxurious silky smooth like chocolate chords with a lot going on for them is also a nice, jazzy kindof smokey cafe vibe indeed. I hope I didn't trail off too much here.

>> No.13900645

>>13899690
Impressive visual. I think as long as you produce quality music, there'll be people out there who'll discover it and savor it. You can also find and listen to music at your own pace in the digital age, there's no need for you to let tailored systems shove it down your throat. As far as percussion goes, try a light but rapid beat to keep things intense juxtaposed with some slower pads and strings, Bersarin Quartett's work has some nice examples of this. Also melodies can still be played without sequencing, as long as they fit the song they'll be fine.
