Not even Tomoko is a NEET, but at least she has way more NEET potential than this bitch. The show is funny but highlights what is wrong with the "I'm a NEET with anime avatar so random lul" western ``otaku'' of this 2010 decade. You see them around here too, posting epic anime screencaps and memes.
They are characteristically low in intelligence, play low level games like mobas and FPS (but with an epic anime avatar steam profile pic) and generally browse /a/ and /v/. Definetly bottom of the barrel. Love anime and hentai memes and could even own some otaku merchandise, usually of the ecchi variety, to show their otaku status (they don't even understand the point of most otaku merchandise).
I hope this anime meme fad dies soon. I can't wait until they "grow up" and leave. I'd rather have the naruto kids than these, they were retarded but in a somewhat innocent way at least.

Otaku merchandise has several points, asides from the first obvious one that is making money. For the otaku, it is a way to show appreciations for the things he loves the most, engage in collectionism as a hobby, and seek company from the characters to fight loneliness, amongst other things. For otaku who had to get into a job, it is a way to go back to a safe place with a sense of sanctuary of the things he used to enjoy all the time. There are more reasons, but the point of them is definetly not to make jokes or show your status as an anime memer to your /v/ros with your epic boob mousepad, pics with your friends and a daki mocking real daki lovers or even melting anime figures in a joke satanic ritual like I've seen done by these memesters. For them it's just a form of aesthetic that they find funny to throw a few bucks at to have some laughs with their m8s at the dorm, not a real passion. I don't think there's anything "not sad" about the hobby of wasting money on merch (especially if it's your parents money like many otaku), no matter the reason, since there's nothing productive about it and it only gives short and instant gratification, but in the long run it just leads you into a bigger hole.

Even if I agree that people who do it as a funny aesthetic thing are silly as you say, there's nothing great about people who do it as a real obsession either. It's no different than a hard drug. It's expensive, gives you short gratification, makes you forget about your loneliness and makes you crave for more. Objectively speaking, the people who are like this might even be sadder than those who do it "for the laughs".

I used to spend a lot of money on merch but I realized this and stopped. I feel much better now. I only spend some money on the original creative material, merch is only a bunch of company milking money out of it and you.

There's a difference between engaging in the niwaka consumptive game and actually engaging with otaku culture. One is shallow, often social, masturbation and the other is a consequence of otakuism--rather, it's the particular way that some people engage with media that warrants the label of "otaku." One deals with symbols as status markers and the other deals with symbols as sort of raw information (i.e. for the sake of interest or "passion").

That's not to say that truotaku don't consume physical goods, it's just done in a different manner, often intensely occupied with details, withdrawn, and obsessive. It's the difference between the guy that spends weeks at a time working on a GK and the guy that buys the latest nendo of the latest popular meme show. I'm also not saying that a person is exactly one or the other, just that otakuism is a state of being and engaging beyond simply buying and consuming. A guy that isnt into figure making, but hunts down and tries to buy every figure of a single character he's in love with is also otaku.

It has been a while since games like old Halo games with decent story lines, organic gameplay and decent soundtracks came out. Really, really long. Now all that matters is the online which is a mess and not really challenging, its always the same death match in the same maps over and over, etc.

RPGs typically focus more on the story and character development and some of them can be quite challenging and with little grinding even... VNs as well but this kind of games while good, they lack challenge and catharsis.
