Same here. Honestly, I don't really get how you're supposed to play PoFV beyond 'dodge shit until opponent dies.' I've beaten Ex mode with all the characters and 1cc'd Lunatic (Aya, lol) but I still don't get advanced play; all I did was dodge around frantically until I won.

And the lack of set patterns means I never seem to get better no matter how much I practice. Deep down in my soul, I'll probably always be a little afraid of Shikieiki.

Eh, since I started playing it, I've noticed I've gotten better at the other Touhou games.

Went from barely scraping my way to Flandre in EoSD Extra to regularly getting to And Then There Were None.

You get better at dodging shit. Touhou isn't ALL memorizing patterns. PoFV is nice for getting better at dodging random bullets.

The only suggestion I have for facing Sikieiki (beyond getting a lot of lives) is to cancel as many returnable bullets as you can. Casting a fairy to do this is usually suicidal, especially if you're using Reisen, Reimu, or Sikieiki, as their fairy attacks make a TON of returnable bullets that WILL be sent right back to you.
I can never pull it off in practice, but if you move to the vertical halfpoint of the screen, close to either edge, most of the returnable bullets, and thus also the spears, will point towards that corner and become easy to avoid by sliding down.

When I cleared with Reisen, I had to focus my way through a shitton of firepower since Sikieiki's boss bomb and Lily were on at the same time. At about the 3 minute mark.

I would've died horrible from the unleashed fury of all the spirit things I focused onto if Siki hadn't decided to self-terminate a couple of seconds later.

Since this is more or less a PoFV gameplay thread,

Anyone have any tips for playing as Youmu? Her charge time is way too long for me to use her properly, and her level 1 attack is shit. Any tips?

Youmu's attack is slow to charge because her Level 1 attack can break any kind of shot, like Cirno's icicles. It can also do crazy things like completely cancel out Mystia's Level 2 attack or the bottom part of Tewi's Level 2 attack if you time it right before the bullets split.

it's still shit though. It does NOTHING if it's paired with a fairy or higher, it only clears bullets in the front (the clear radius isn't very big in front, either), and when charging you can't shoot, so you can't cancel returnable bullets. Her obscenely slow charge time makes it very difficult to cast a fairy without resetting the combo time gauge, and casting a witch is just ridiculous. It's just too slow to be used for anything that you can't just fly through.
It's handy for dealing with something small like a single one of Komachi's EX attacks, but when you have 3 or more EXs at once and a witch coming at you, it's just too slow. You might be able to make a tiny dent, but not enough to save you and it definitely won't save enough time to charge it again.

And because she's so slow, she can't chain blast fairy attacks as a defense. That's REALLY handy (especially as Cirno) when you're at BONUS.

Destroying fairies and activated spirits (they will auto-active if destroyed by a fairy/spirit explosion, and some lv 1 attacks) clears bullets from your screen and sends them to the enemy.
Casting a fairy, witch, or dragon will clear everything except a few EX attacks
Destroying or returning any bullet will raise your power gauge, used for above.
Hold shift to activate scope

Everything else is attacking, which is pointless except against humans. That's all you need to know. Time the fairy movement and spirit activation to clear bullets around you. And just don't get it. That's all there is to the game.
