13802294 No.13802294 [Reply] [Original]

To those that still don't know, due to a recent hint by MangaGamer there is reason to believe they licensed Dies Irae and will announce it at Otakon.

The hint:
https://twitter.com/MangaGamer/status/622269630342533121

MangaGamer has two recently employed translators that showed interest in translating Dies Irae (Conjueror and Gare) and of them (Gare) actually translated Dies Irae prologue:
https://gareblogs.wordpress.com/2013/09/25/english-translation-dies-irae-amantes-amentes-%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A8%E3%82%B9-%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AC-prologue/

A recent tweet by Conjueror gives more ground to expect a Dies Irae announcement:
https://twitter.com/Conjueror/status/623038862227456000
>
Just compare that to the way this video starts:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWajBiWxTaw

Remember, it's still possible that it isn't Dies Irae after all so don't expect it with 100% certainty.

What is the same? There's something going on there that cannot be put into english for obvious reasons. That is actually one of the reasons I wouldn't want to translate Dies is because it pulls that off several times.

I hope you know what I'm talking about

I could nag more but that's probably the biggest problem, and though that's probably close to the best that can be done, it's still not enough.

And this is baby stuff on Dies, the more you approach mercurius the more your brain melts as you try to figure out how to put his sentences in English while trying to sound as ..."epic" as he does.

He's probably referring to insanity and justice being the same to him.

It's been a while since I've read Dies, and I'm not sure if this would work in any other scenes, but I think you shouldn't be afraid to go a little bit liberal here:

Follow through with your madness, or if you prefer, justice. "For what are those two if not two sides of the same coin?" or "It matters not whichever face you choose -- they are all one and the same to me."

I might've only ruined this though.
Translating this game is definitely a mad endeavor.

>> No.13805777

>>13805753
Yeah, that's what he is referring and is clear when you read from the Japanese text, but when it goes to English it becomes unclear and may even be saying something completely different.

Seisanhai's justice and his insanity are one and the same to kemonodono (the speaker), and that's really cool effect done by the reading on top of 狂気, you could try to circumvent this using parenthesis "your madness (justice)" but it would be confusing since you don't know why that's there, in english parenthesis can be used for explanation of the previous terms, but in this case it's used as a synonym, that these words are one and the same.

The problem is that the type of people who read visual novels are not competent translators, compared to those who have been working on said difficult literature. Kinda silly this actually got funded, don't people know how VN anime usually goes? 13 episodes is generally nowhere near enough time to properly adapt a VN. Grisaia no Kajitsu did indeed get that but most agree that they fucked the pacing hard. However, there was also a 47 minute OVA for Meikyuu and a 10 episode series for Rakuen, which has been received more positively.

One of the few good adaptations was the recent Unlimited Blade Works, since it was 26 episodes long and focused only on covering that specific route.

Unless they pull off some original stuff not in the VN (similar to DEEN's F/SN...which was terrible iirc), it's just "woah you're setting yourself for failure" sort of thing.

If the hint is about the game they're working on then it's going to be Silverio Vendetta since they both played it and it's from light.

>> No.13816722

>>13816348
That would be pretty funny. I hadn't even heard of that game until I was browsing Light's games to see what else they have, but then I was like "Holy crap, this actually sounds like the silver thing they're talking about." So it actually seems kind of possible. Although it's really new, so that would be extra impressive, but a good sign for VN localization.

Really, any non-DI Light game would still be a seriously big deal, because it's practically a guarantee that they'd be able to get Dies Irae if there's enough interest. I don't know how Silverio Vendetta is since I don't really trust a buncha votes with no opinions behind them, but it sounds pretty badass. If I had to guess I'd figure it's still good, just that it doesn't get as much attention because everybody's all about Dies Irae. I think all of Light's games are like that, pretty much.

Are they really? Didn't Tears to Tiara II sold like shit? Well in any case, if MG were to get it, they could only get the first Utawarerumono since it's on PC. The sequels are on the Playstation consoles and MG has no money for that.

I have no idea about the sales (there's not much sales data for stuff like this out there), but I mean that Atlus is the company with the partnership with Leaf. They also did Aquapazza. So if anyone does Utawarerumono it'd probably be them.
