Just finished my Sui patch for Rei. You can get it at the link below. Also, Higurashi thread while we're at it.

I remember there was a translation of Rei a while back, is this the edited script or a new version?

not this guy but it's just that only Saikoroshi was translated, while Rei also had two other bonus arcs who weren't until this patch.

I think there was a site just for 07th Expansion stuff full of working MEGA links out there (even for the PS3 version of Sui).

I don't quite remember the name, but the guy who made this site has 2 spanish fan-groups on Facebook (one for Higurashi and other for Umineko).

Newfag here. Trying to read Higurashi and I have a few questions.

1. Is the anime as shit as people say it is?
2. How do I install the core VNs? I don't know which torrent to use and I don't know which patches to install.

>> No.13788632

>>13788592
Oh, and one more question:
3. Which stories should I read? There's Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Kai and Rei and Kira and Kaku and Outbreak and other shit. Which ones do I need to read and which ones should I want to read?

Sorry for being a newfag.

Which Satoko faggot? I don't know this story.

>> No.13788821

>>13788592

1. No. Actually it's hit or miss. The first season is much weaker, however, I feel the second season is much stronger.

There is a lot of cheese that is cut out of the VN. Akasaka out of nowhere is done much better in the anime and cuts out the silliness of Rika drawing. The conclusion of Minagoroshi is way better in the anime (the time stop thing felt very cheesy and lame, it undermined the heroism of the cast).

Honestly, there are a lot of improvements in the second season of the anime. For the first half of the story, the VNs are definitely better.

>> No.13788870

>>13788632
Ni -> Kai -> Rei (Rei is the fandisc - not fully translated - wait for MG to tl)
Kira is a few fun little OVAs. You can watch them after you've finished Kai.
Outbreak is some shitty original story. You can watch after you've finished Kai.
Watch the first 4 episodes on Ni no matter what. (They cover the first arc and are pretty well done)

(What you really should be doing after you've read Kai is starting on Umineko)

>> No.13788888

>>13788821
So overall do you think I should read the VN or watch the anime? Or should I do both?

I would do both, but I've always been a fan of re-reading/re-watching shit.

>> No.13788942

Dear god don't watch S2 before reading Kai.
The general consensus is that S2 is an awful adaptation.
I said watching Ni's first 4 episodes is worthwhile, but there's really nothing about Kai that I can advocate.

Umineko isn't a sequel, but it is related in a few ways that I can't really explain to you if you haven't read it (it's also even better than Higurashi).

>> No.13789039

>>13788942
Huh. That's interesting, because it's exactly the opposite of what >>13788821 said. OK, then. I'll read the VNs. That the VNs are better than the anime was the consensus I saw, so >>13788821 appears to be in the minority.

I just have one question, which is how I get the damn thing set up. I'm a newcomer to VNs, so I don't really know the procedure. I've only read Chaos;Head and Muv Luv. Total newfag, as I said. What version do I want to download and how do I install the proper patches? Do you have a simple guide to that?

>> No.13789080

Read the VN first, then watch the anime if you want. VN is better and the intended medium Higurashi was written for.

I just checked nyaa and it seems they have everything you need - both prepatched and unpatched.
I'd personally recommend using the original sprites and backgrounds, and patching music/sound (essentially a must).

Why do I want the original sprites? They look kind of bad, honestly. Why shouldn't I get the updated ones?

>> No.13789269

>>13789174
In my opinion, the original ones are cruder, but more expressive. They're a tad more accurate to context since they were made (and scripted) by the original creator team. I started with those ones, so I have a soft spot for them.
The Steam ones are easier on the eyes, although some of the sprite emotions might not be as accurate as I would've liked them to be.
I can't pitch in about the PlayStation sprites since I've never used them, but the option is there.

Muv Luv Alternative. I got totally hooked about halfway through and finished the entire second half practically in one sitting. That's 25+ hours of content, so I skipped a night of sleep and didn't go to work.

That was mostly because the job was awful, though. I wouldn't have done that if I cared about the job.

I spent years believing higurashi and umineko were the next great works of human civilization. I wasted years trying to build a philosophy around the stories and their mysteries and meanings. I wasted the best years of my life on mediocre, poorly drawn Chinese masturbatory aids.

There is just something about Muv Luv, its really strong. I thankfully read it when i was in Holidays but after i finished it i was like mind broken, no drive for anything. Thank god there were lots of thats about muvluv at that time so i could atleast get my suffering and excitement off my chest. I Think if i read it while working i would have lost a day or two on Alternative aswell.

The whole thing is lacking the CGs, sunset mode and a graphic script check though, (like with a night background being used all of a sudden at day), would still need a bit more work to be optimal.

>> No.13792014

>>13791868
I know. Though I spent enough time working on all that shit, so I'm not gonna bother. Someone else can do it. But there are only a few CG's in the entire thing, anyhow. It's no game breaking experience without them. Also, I'm busy with other shit at the moment. Make a to do list and I'll get on it when I can if no one else does. However, which night background displays at day? I'm sure I replaced them all correctly.

Literally at the very start of Saikoroshi. The problem isn't to replace them correctly. Because they're photos the original were a bit randomly done at times and the difference between night and day wasn't as obvious as with Alchemist, that why it had also day backgrounds in night scenes.
