I think the game's trying to tell me something.

Took me 50 odd buckets. Whole 20 buckets more then usual, and that was mostly because I messed up final form twice. If I haven't botched it the cost would be roughly the same as if I used "stronger" girls. So much for 3-5 being "hard" map.

Any better way to set up 3-2a with a CV flag? This has been working pretty well, but the problem is when they leave more than two ships up in the aerial phase, flag will take one out and then the rest will miss, and the one left up will get a torpedo in on someone with no morale and I've had to bucket after that. I wanted to switch out one of the CVLs with a BB, but then flag was missing MVP since she didn't get the first shot in after the aerial phase.

I normally don't use flashlight, that was a desperate move to have more shots at the boss. Night battle gear only matters on E6, it's a waste of space here for me. Skilled Lookouts also sounds cooler compared to Starshell. This whole concept of veteran fairies is awesome and rad, making this choice a no-brainer. Unless I'm scraping the barrel for LoS like here I normally don't use radars at all, with my BBs and CAs running 3 red seaplane or 2 red seaplane lookouts. Similar deal with CLs and DDs.
My normal 3-5 fleet is 2DD with radars, 2DD with 3 torps, 1CL with 2 red radar and 1 CL with 3 reds. You can't cut-in well with ~12 luck, sure, but you slaughter most of the filth during day making this a moot point.

So far I'm under the impression that having no subs is more advanced than having subs, so I'd say not to start going the no sub route until they clear 5-3 at least. And 6-1 needs 3 subs to reach the boss node.

6-1 monthly, convenience since you do all quest at one map and more esoteric concepts like 3-2 steel farming are the real argument for keeping subs. I got a set to get done with 6-1 and scrapped them afterwords withing the same week. 5-3 without normal fleet kills all the fun that map has to offer too, not worth it. Also that part about /tg/ is total bullshit unless you're talking about questfags.
Destroyers cost similar amount to run and do transport quests just fine. World 4 boss quest can be easily done while leveling someone at 4-1, killing two birds with one stone. CV kill quests yet again can be finished while grinding EXP. Giving exp to subs also feels like a total waste for me. While I'm not so sure that using subs and leveling at safe spots like 3-2-A is more resource efficient you're spending twice the time doing the same job, and time is sure as hell more valuable for me. Getting first set of subs is also a daunting task. Subs are convenient, sure, but there's absolutely nothing advanced about throwing 6DDs at 2-2.

I used 2CA 2DD 1 CLT 1 CVL at first because 3 fights only and cheap but random crits and low life dd made me change to 1FBB 3CLT 2CV. The difference for trash cleaning is so good and i am HQ99 so no Wo kai on the third node (only 42 for AS so a lot of CV's slots used for bombing) but the boss node still fucked 2-3 ships per run, maybe bad luck.

I'm at HQ50 now and I was running with 2CA 2DD and 2CVL. My problem is CVLs getting chuuha/taiha very easily early into the boss fight. Your setup seems a lot more stable so I suppose I could aim for 3CLTs before HQ69. Do you know if the drop rates differ based on HQ level like they do with the subs on 1-5?

Maya with (strong) AACI can't take part in artillery spotting. You have to remember branching rules exist, so you can't always afford having weak CA in your fleet. Meanwhile DDs lose nothing from their potential by using Akizuki guns, they are the best guns for them. Even if you can't upgrade them, they still give a lot of AA and little boosts to accuracy and evasion.

It's just not smart pouring all your screws on a DD gun first when you are more likely to use CAs and BBs in an event, and they use up less screws. People got by fine without it a year ago, it's not a priority, effectiveness is preferable over cheap results. Maya is still strong enough to deliver a strong single attack with upgraded equipment and can still double attack at night.

Nobody said anything about pouring all your screws on DD gun. With dailies and one slider, it takes 22 screws to upgrade T94 AAFD to Akizuki gun, over 3+ weeks (assuming you're forced to use Fubuki). Even new players can get 9 screws every week (I'm excluding 5-2 quest), not counting one time quests and monthlies, so getting one shouldn't be a problem. People got by fine without upgraded guns as well so your argument is very weak. None of Akashi improvements are game changers but they do help. Maya's strength with AACI is less than half of normal CA setup. She has weaker eq and can't perform day 2x 120% double attack. Difference is very big. So big, it makes me question if using AACI on Maya is worth it at all. Most of the time you will only weaken the airstrike for the price of having "durable Yuudachi" instead of proper CA. I guess it depends on the map, hard to say anything in general.

I have Akizuki but during events, her eq usually goes to Yuudachi. With two guns at +4 Yuudachi reaches 83 firepower. Akizuki guns are the best equipment available to her and AACI activating half the time is nice thing to have. Even if the guns weren't upgraded, the AACI would still be worth much more than +4 damage I would get form +9 12.7 or +4 12.7 B. For me it's isn't "Maya vs DD as AACI user" because I prefer using strong CA. For me it's "should I use AACI on DD if I were planning to use DD in the first place?" - answer is yes most of the time because I don't lose much, just have to use air radar instead of surface one.

Yes. Due to how damage is increased in combined fleet, in day battle even Kongous with 35.6cm go over day cap. Increased accuracy helps a lot and bonus damage is also nice when said ship gets chuuha'd or in hankousen/red T.
