How old were you during the time when it seemed that Japan was literally going to take over the United States in take-home income, economically & technologically?

This. Getting a doll becomes more attractive each day, comparatively speaking.

That feel when you will never live a boss's life in Japan during the bubble.

Is GDP per capital really the best metric to use in comparison.

Because otherwise countries like Switzerland / Luxembourg for example would be excessively in advance.

Never saw anime on TV. Just at the video rental store were stuff like Ranma ½, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Ninja Scroll. I didn't notice anything good like Serial Experiments Lain. Ranma ½ was the anime that introduced me to how weird anime was and it put me off at the time, being the little skater dork I was. I was more into renting movies like A Clockwork Orange and video games instead. I did mail order a DVD of "Twilight of the Darkmaster" and had seen all the standard anime movies like Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Vampire Hunter D, ect. Those were awesome.

Then the fucking towers fell, I had just failed out of high school for the last time and lost all my friends. Things just went South from there. Of course the recession had to be in my prime years.

I think there's something wrong with the graph you posted. It might be an exchange rate effect.

I know. It's a better measure of output than raw GDP. OP's graph implied the Japanese had a much higher income on average than the US, which we know wasn't true, especially after the bubble popped. I should have explained my objection.

I can't remember exactly when but I have memories of when I found out nintendo was japanese and I was kinda surprised, but it explained why there was often some weird foreign shit in the media I consumed
