>music
ddr by a landslide, especially older mixes with dancemania licenses
>difficulty
i'd say ddr is better as far as fair difficulty goes, like there's nothing comically impossible in ddr that just wastes your money in the arcade, which can't be said for piu
>fun
piu is a lot more creative with its gameplay tbh, i feel like i only like ddr still because of nostalgia, the newer entries in the series are not very engaging, whereas piu seems to keep it fresh still
can you tell i've played way more ddr than i have piu and my opinions are invalid

I don't think so. Lifelong passions emerge from all sorts of activities. I've played rhythm games for over 10 years and still am not tired of them. I remain active in the community and play regularly. I think rhythm games fit an interesting niche where they will never be obsolete, unlike shooter games or any other genre, where people only play the latest rendition and not older releases. I built a capacitive dance pad today. It works surprisingly well: The sensitivity is high, and latency is miniscule. The only problem I've noticed is that it's only capable of detecting two presses at a time, which means no hands. You also can't play with shoes.

Every other schematic for homemade DDR pads I'd seen uses mechanical parts, power tools, require hours of construction and at least $100 of materials. My design uses a $10 Arduino, some metal plates, wires and resistors, and can be built in 30 minutes. Fixing the plates is as easy as taping them to the floor. A few obscure blogs mention similar projects, but I had to specifically Google "capacitive ddr pad" to find them, and all of them are pre-Arduino with overly complicated wiring. Theoretically, you could build it on top of a wooden board and cover it with anything dielectric to make it portable/nicer-looking.

Is anyone interested in schematics / source code, or would I be wasting my time? I don't see a lot of people playing DDR these days.

>> No.13738171

That's cool. Is there any way to make it recognize more than just two button presses at once?

>> No.13738200

>>13738171
It can detect four button presses at once if two people step on two arrows. The problem is that your body capacitance gets spread out between each pad you touch. Two pads at once works fine, but three is spreading it too thin.

It might be possible by increasing the resistance, but I'm not certain. I'm using 5600 ohms per arrow right now. At 4700, only one arrow works at a time. At 6800, the arrows become too sensitive and register as always-on.

Yes. It works through almost any material, as long as it's not too thick. It would also be possible to mod a pair of sneakers to conduct electricity through the soles, but that would involve gutting them.

Osu charts and IIDX-ish/BMS charts are two different things. This is why you need difficulty tables when playing non-insane charts in LR2. I don't get the appeal of holds either, but hey, osu is apparently quite popular.

Who's tried making charts here? Do you find it easy or hard? I believe many people underestimate the work that goes into making charts here.

>> No.13742579

I think osu!mania is only popular because Osu, the main game it's bundled with, is popular. I'm a long term Stepmania player and when I tried to play 4K osu!mania with an SM skin I just couldn't because the timing is horrible and the holds are awkward. I felt like I was playing one of those cheap rhythm game ripoffs you find in flash games. The accuracy was all over the place and everything felt wrong. Didn't have this problem with o2jam and even some Chinese clone MMO felt better.

But that's just my opinion, man.

It's objective, though, that not as many people play it as Osu, very few ever make ranked charts for it and the devs themselves have said they don't maintain it to an acceptable level for competition.

If you try to fit in and take on inside jokes of course people will jump on you. It's a stupid thing to do. Most of the "active" people there are those who know each-other in some way and they literally talk among themselves.
I've been helping out a bit and nobody has ever jumped on me. I don't go around posting my opinions or try to fit in. I hardly know these people and find it stupid to attempt and take part of their jokes or discussions.
From my perspective since the forum is relatively inactive of course you'll only see certain groups of people and they'll act like any other group of friends would. Bantering, bitching, being jerks, but not taking any of it seriously. If you try to jump in they'll apply the same "rules" to you. If you don't get their "joking" manner or don't know how to deal with such people then don't do it.

Yeah you need some dedication to clear scratch-heavy songs, but it doesn't matter when you do them. I'd say it's easier to do them once you're clearing mid 12s because your general playstyle will be much more refined and probably find it easier to control your hands then than now. However if you're bored or demotivated it can be a good change for a while to practice something different just for fun. Do as you please. It doesn't matter too much.

idk some of those names but people like aubrey are legitimately bad people and no, no one who actually knows about them likes them except whatever sows clique

sows is literally the worst collection of human beings who play rhythm games that you can find. some are fine of course, as with any relatively large community, but as a whole it's horrible

bemanistyle (for casual players mostly) and vjarmy/solid state squad (for more hardcore players) were your best bets to find good people playing these games but those places are dead now, and the music game crowd is honestly too scattered to say any one community is worthwhile. at least that's my take on it

to my surprise, I've found these generals quite nice due to anonymity and a healthy collection of newish players that haven't been exposed to the toxic atmosphere or drama of many places. I like the questions from new players and discussion is pretty straightforward and civil

it depends on the the player, the song, and the keys (and springs and switches)

usually if a player is hitting the keys excessively hard, the increasing chart density as they advance will force them to draw it back and hit them more softly

similarly, if you're mostly using your arms you'll be forced into mostly using your fingers for denser songs. but many people find utilizing your arms to hit the keys harder can be helpful as you've noted regarding timing. it's normal to do so

I personally don't use my arms at all and play completely static wrist scratching 1048 and hit the keys moderately hard in iidx. very very few songs are dense enough in general to necessitate hitting the keys more lightly than I usually do. at the other end of the spectrum, in bms ,the situation is different where many songs above 20 I'm hitting the keys extremely lightly. at some point it's impossible to hit the keys particularly hard assuming a chart is dense enough

the situation with keys can vary so much that it's hard to generalize. some modded jkocs can be so sensitive as to require virtually no pressure to activate them (and make virtually no sound when hit), or a new asc/arcade machine might feel like the keys require a bit too much pressure to activate, or anything in between and they all influence how hard keys are hit. too many variables to go into but you get the picture

Clear rate is the number on the song select screen that indicates which % of plays on the song where clears. I don't see how it's useful.

>> No.13753707

>>13753638
For new players, it can tell wether the chart is "easy" or "hard" for that particular song level. It is useful.

>> No.13753744

>>13753707
It's incredibly inaccurate though. Like for songs that people like, but the highest difficulty is only 9 or 10, it's gonna have a high as fuck clear rate because people who are normally playing 12s are forced to play a low difficulty (relative to them) chart even if it's hard compared to other 9s or 10s.

And then there's songs that are really easy but have a difficult finisher, where you can enjoy 98% of the song before getting fucked

>> No.13753824

why are most LR2 songs shit

>> No.13753863

>>13753824
I enjoy most of them chart wise. Just hate that LR2 loves to randomly throw bullshit at the end more often than IIDX. I get really frustrated failing with a AA.

Not really worth it if you're still learning the game. Aside from wonky volumes of song previews and some really questionable difficulty ratings for earlier charts it's alright.

i get that in iidx its mostly around 8's and 9's for most players.

>> No.13755490

>>13755451
On the old difficulty scale, 6s to 7s was a hell of a hurdle that you can only overcome by big dicking it. I don't know what would be the equivalent using the new scale since that one's fucking retarded and rates Can't Stop Fallin' in Love Speed Mix as a 12.

playing for clears is a lot easier than playing for accuracy tho

I picked up X3 a while ago, and I've managed to work my way up to 11s with relative ease. I'm having trouble with 12s, but it doesn't feel like I've hit a wall by any means.

Then again, I used to play DDR years ago. Maybe it's like riding a bike.

>> No.13755621

I hit the 10's wall
I can clear a minority of them. The other ones I just can't read/react to the dense charts. If it's not that, the scratching kills me.

I feel like DDR is starting to loose quality, but the only thing ITG really has is that it's harder and you can get custom songs with OpenITG. So i'll say DDR only because it's still being made.

R21 ITG = PIU > ITG = EX- DDR > SN+ DDR

There are a lot of great custom doubles charts even though the actual ITG staff kinda sucked at making them for whatever reason, which gives R21 the major upper hand to me since I barely even play singles anymore.

On that note, what it is with DDR and people complaining about the charts? In any other rhythm game the skilled players keep quiet and practice until they can regularly clear the hardest stuff. In DDR the skilled players just bitch endlessly and blame the chart for being "bad" when met with something they can't breeze through.
