Happy Alice doesn't work.

Alice the loner, too afraid of messing up what she has to advance and deeply obsessed with her dolls and research. Shanghai can't talk or even think independently, she's just a thing, any personality she has is that imagined by Alice as she fondly controls the doll to brush her hair, tend to her wounds and act as though she's listening to another rant. Ultimately Alice's lonely life style is her own choice, she allows guests lost in the woods seeking shelter to stay in her house... but she doesn't interact with them, she tends to her dolls, continues her research and lives her life out, alone.

Alice is meant to be alone, meant to remain merely content with peeks of satisfaction for a job well done, a new technique discovered. Perhaps she lives in hope Marisa will make a move, it's not like Alice will.

tl;dr - I like Alice the way she is, a happy Alice doesn't seem right... not without her changing and frankly I like her freaky otaku nature. It's what we all see in her and sympathise with, freaky loners ourselves. ;_;

Admit it, you like her because she's secretly lonely, but attempts to look strong on the outside. You like how she keeps to herself, yet craves human attention from people she respects. I said she's lonely. That much is more or less canon at this point, from IaMP Suika's arc (the official ending as I understand it, as ending #1 usually is considered the games real story) has her going on at Alice about how she hangs around humans too much for a Youkai. The profiles and her entry for Memento of Strict Sense all explain how she's a loner and that while villagers may sleep over at her place if forced to during time at the magic woods, they prefer not to because she's creepy as fuck and doesn't really interact with them.

How happy or sad she is depends on the situation, but it's certainly been suggested in canon material with her nailing straw effigies into trees and taking drugs bought from Eirin (the only one buying them) to make her dreams perfect suggest she's not the happiest person in Gensokyo, all fuelling the doujin ideas she a sad loner craving the attention of the few people she considers friends.

Why not? Not like anything was being discussed, I've already got all these pictures and a straight up image flood is boring. I like Alice to be kind of creepy, potentially dangerous and on edge. It makes her more interest and keeps the idea that she isn't just another happy inhabitant of Gensokyo, but a real youkai with some emotional issues.

Ok, get this. Alice's dolls are 100% controlled by Alice. The magic she uses doesn't animate them and give them a sense of independence or anything, no matter what doujins think. They are utterly under her control, their every move, action and expression (if capable). Her house is full of them and they do all the actual work, Alice herself builds the dolls, it's not something she'd ever use dolls to do, and she's obsessive over them, researching new methods, their looks their creation. When she's talking to them, she's really talking to herself, when they tenderly pick her up, defend her or tend to her wounds, it's just her and her extremely dexterous pair of hands. She doesn't socialise with most people and when people stay over she keeps to herself, at least people other then main characters. Her self isolation alone is creepy enough. A lone mage out in the woods, at least Marisa goes out, organises parties and sells goods to people in the village... Alice is a loner and only interacts with a few others, usually with formal reasons.

I dunno, does Yukari? Most of the youkai are at the very least bitches who love to attack humans outside the village just because they can, some of them eat that way, others just do it because they can it seems (Chen attacks humans, interestingly enough).

Alice is youkai in the same sense that Patchy is youkai, which I think is basically they became youkai though magic... personal I define youkai as 'monster' seeing as the broad definition in Touhou is used for all of them despite many different origins for things they are based on, from vampires to supernatural animals.

In any case, most likely no, but who knows. She's not human any more and she only really acts human out of respect for them, if that respect goes she could start being a bitch to wandering people herself.

The potential is there. Just needs a bunch of humans to piss her off enough, perhaps by hunting her down because she isn't human.

Flandre can't eat from normal people. When she tries she freaks out and nukes them, leaving nothing to eat. Sakuya makes her food and makes it look normal and civilised.

Man, Sakuya is the real monster of that mansion. Sure, the rest are actual monsters, but Sakuya looks after them all as a human maid that can stop time and doesn't give a shit about the plight of others, only her masters will (and their adorable loli bodies).

She always looked so sad and cold, speaking in an elegant, soft voice only to ask for her purchases. She never smiled, but you knew that hers would be beautiful, if only she would open up.

Smitten, you soon learn her visiting schedule, arriving at the market before dawn to claim the stall she always passed by first and offering her impossibly good deals (covered out of your own pocket, naturally), all to hear the sweet sound of her voice for that fleeting moment each month.

After almost a year, one day you see her approaching with a slight spring in her step - an impossibility against her stoic nature. But, you call her over for the monthly deal, and flash her an extra smile as you hand over the foodstuffs. She studies your face for a moment, and slowly smiles back, as gorgeous as you had ever imagined it.

You sleep poorly that night, impossibly anxious about the result. But, you claim the same stall by morning, and by mid-afternoon the maid returns and marches right up to the stall. She asks you to meet her outside of the village at nightfall, which is agreed to without question. That evening, she leads you on a quiet walk through the forest, over to the massive scarlet mansion by a lake several miles away. You work up the courage to ask a few small questions, and learn that her name is Sakuya. A beautiful name, for a beautiful woman.

At the mansion, You pass by a nervous youkai doorguard dressed in some sort of green Chinese outfit, who calls out a greeting but goes unrecognized by Sakuya. Well, that's the usual for her, after all.

Inside the mansion, Sakuya leads you up to the second floor, and finally opens a large set of double doors to reveal a beautifully-furnished western bedroom, lit with a small lantern and complete with a large double bed. Your heart quickens immediately - surely she was lonely?

You hear leathery wings unfold somewhere in the darkness, and catch a glimpse of bright red eyes staring at you.

Moments later, terrible claws rake along your side. You fall to the ground with a cry of pain, only to be pounced on and held down by something small, yet impossibly strong. Something sharp bites into your neck, and you struggle wildly, but your attacker merely mutters something about holding still and claws at your chest.

Several distant snaps are the last thing you hear, as your ribcage is torn apart...

The soft kiss of a time-touched blade sliding into my neck, the exhilarating draining as my crimson essence is siphoned out. As the tattered remnants of my spirit dissipate, I would care not, knowing that part of me would remain within the bodies of my undying loves for time eternal. To die like this, I would have no regrets.

I actually do want to get eaten after I die.
