13673730 No.13673730 [Reply] [Original]

So I arrived in Japan a few days ago /jp/ (staying in the Park Hyatt Tokyo for those interested) and I have to say, it hasn't really met my expectations. In fact, everything's a bit 'odd'.

>The people are cold and can barely speak English. I'm talking 'Hello' and that's it.
>Expensive as fuck food (bought a katsu set from katsukura at and it cost me 2500 yen)
>Only people I see who are 'into' anime and manga have been in harijuku. Half the time it's teenage, weaboo, white girls in costume.

On the plus side.

Harijuku and shinjuku both have great food and a really young, cosmopolitan vibe mixed with old japanese culture. I'd live here if given the chance. I guess I was just expecting more 'wackiness' and anime so to speak.

Keeping a fluent level in a language you're not exposed to frequently or barely ever use is much harder than it sounds. Languages aren't like learning to ride a bike, once you get fluent in a language, you can lose a LOT of it in a few months/years. That's especially true for languages that are very exotic in their organization and structure to the brain of the learner (which is the case for english learned by japanese people).

English is useless in Japan. As a native Japanese, you'll always be able to get around with japanese, so there are barely any situations where you absolutely need English. English is irrelevant in Japan. Someone spending hours memorizing vocabulary words or verbs he'll never use will eventually stop, and from that point, it goes downhill pretty fast.

I think an English-speaking person would be able to guess that protéine is just protein in French without too much trouble. language barriers create alot of inefficiency, but I'm ok with them. I think different cultural/national units with barriers between them aren't necessarily a bad thing. either way, it's not going to go away. compromises like esperanto aren't strong enough to overcome the inertia of native dominant languages.

Ideal would be dual-linguistic society, with local language, and a neutral-as-possible global one (lojban?).

there's nothing wrong with cultural differences. that doesn't mean that barbaric practices should be accepted because of "culture" however. of course that opens a debate, but I think that there are certain basic human rights and enlightenment ideas that can be agreed on. I'm also not sad about the end of foot binding in China.

for all the western influence, Japan is a very different culture. differences mean less homogeny, which make humans more fit overall. also, sometimes cultures make advances or refuse to advance - for example, the west being spooked by nuclear power and not using it to the fullest. if there were one global culture, everyone would be stuck with its weaknesses, and if a one world govt collapsed, everyone would be rekt.

I agree with that ideal but I don't think its doable.

I went to Yoshinoya a while ago; you know, Yoshinoya?
Well anyways there was an insane number of people there, and I couldn't get in.
Then, I looked at the banner hanging from the ceiling, and it had "150 yen off" written on it.
Oh, the stupidity. Those idiots.
You, don't come to Yoshinoya just because it's 150 yen off, fool.
It's only 150 yen, 1-5-0 YEN for crying out loud.
There're even entire families here. Family of 4, all out for some Yoshinoya, huh? How fucking nice.
"Alright, daddy's gonna order the extra-large." God I can't bear to watch.
You people, I'll give you 150 yen if you get out of those seats.
Yosinoya should be a bloody place.
That tense atmosphere, where two guys on opposite sides of the U-shaped table can start a fight at any time,
the stab-or-be-stabbed mentality, that's what's great about this place.
Women and children should screw off and stay home.
Anyways, I was about to start eating, and then the bastard beside me goes "extra-large, with extra sauce."
Who in the world orders extra sauce nowadays, you moron?
I want to ask him, "do you REALLY want to eat it with extra sauce?"
I want to interrogate him. I want to interrogate him for roughly an hour.
Are you sure you don't just want to try saying "extra sauce"?
Coming from a Yoshinoya veteran such as myself, the latest trend among us vets is this, extra green onion.
That's right, extra green onion. This is the vet's way of eating.
Extra green onion means more green onion than sauce. But on the other hand the price is a tad higher. This is the key.
And then, it's delicious. This is unbeatable.
However, if you order this then there is danger that you'll be marked by the employees from next time on; it's a double-edged sword.
I can't recommend it to amateurs.
What this all really means, though, is that you, >>13673730, should just stick with today's special.

Truthfully, I think you set an unrealistic view of the town for yourself before you got there. I spent nine months studying there, picked up a Japanese wife, and learned quite a few things along the way. There are many places to get cheap food as long as you don't just follow your nose for the first sings of food. Hit up a local grocery store at about 6:30pm or later and look around for discounted food. You can expect to see premade meals and breads start goin 30% up to 60%off (in my area a meal from a place like that would be around 400 yen). The everyday person most likely won't want to talk with a foreigner. They get too nervous about speaking English unless they have the confidence that they can speak perfectly. If you want more of the anime type stuff go and take the Ueno line and get off in Akihabara. As cliche as it is, that is the best place to go. Younger people, especially there, will be more apt to talking, especially about mutual interests.

They don't need to communicate with the world because they create a metric fuckton of original content due to a retarded work ethic from the post-war period.

And last, but not least, English is hard as fuck to learn. Europeans have a fairly easy time of it depending on the country. But Japs? They're half a world away, with a very different grammar system, and a rigid school system that treats English the same way it does Japanese, which will never work.

Very few? What the fuck? I'd say that in most of Europe, including Eastern Europe and Russia, you can't talk in English with anyone except college students or tourist trap staff.
Good luck talking to any random person from France or Germany in English. And I've been mostly to their capitals, outside of there it's even worse.
Only Nordic countries, Holland and Belgium have good English.
I've been to most of Europe and that has been my experience. If you add South America, Africa and Asia there's not much English there either so the % goes down even more. The anglosphere has money, and in the proffesional world English is more common (in big corporations) no matter the country, but in the streets and in the daily life there's little to no English in most countries, and people can't speak it.

Same here.

Real ones aren't obvious I think. There's nothing about me that would scream 'otaku' to the average layman (or normie) but I'm more so than these posers who I see.

I think most that you see who seem relatively social are just scenesters who made an... interesting choice of scene. You don't chose to be otaku or hikiki-neet, I think, it chooses you. Some even think it's all about anime and manga etc... real otaku aren't necessarily weeaboos and will like any nerd thing including western ones.

Anyway, the biggest compliment I ever got was by this 17yo Japanese girl on interpals who was talking to me for some reason who said I'm more otaku than most Japanese otaku that she knows. I wasn't even trying to show my powerlevel either... just talking about interests.

I'm on SSI for mental illness so I'm more NEET than most here. I've never worked and will never have to. Just because I could get 'niche' bitches hanging off my dick now and again (if I wanted to, but I don't care) doesn't mean I'm a fake NEET. Most NEETs here will go to work eventually. I'm 36, have never worked and will never work. I can talk to women due to experience and maturity, that's all.

Good idea.

I believe you shouldn't underestimate Aikido. Now I know you may be thinking, "Why take a weakling martial art like Aikido seriously when I am learning Kendo?" I can see why you would think that, how can a peaceful martial arts like Aikido beat a powerful one like Kendo?

Well, I have a story to share with you.

Years ago, I was a Kendoka, I thought I was the toughest kid in high school, I would pick fights, and kick ass. I was full of hate, until I picked a fight with the wrong dude. He was a Japanese exchange student, I still remember his name, Noboru Takeda.

I picked on him because of his hilarious and thick Japanese accent. I told him I was going to beat him so hard, he would go back to China(Yeah, I was a little racist prick.), he never said anything back, made me wanted to kick his ass even harder.

Well, here comes the fight. I threw men and do strikes, he dodged them like I was a mere white belt. I was tiring out and he knew, I saw the smirk on his face that made me raged hard. I put all my strength in one amazing tsuki, and he grabbed past it to my wrist and threw me over. My back smacked on the hard cement ground, and I was knocked out for who knows how long.

When I woke up I was in the school infirmary, I asked the nurse who brought me here, and you guessed it, Noboru Takeda. The next day, he wasn't at school, he was back in Japan, and I never got to thank him, for saving my life and showing me the light. I soon learned that he was an Aikidoka and have been practicing Aikido ever since to show my thanks to him.

Its lunch, I went to my favourite sandwich shop, got a delicious veal sandwich and was on my way back home. There was this thuggish "Nigga" style black dude, he was behind me, I stopped, because he was walking quite fast, and I didn't want to be in his way.
He comes up to me, and asked, “Do you have any money?”, I knew where he was going with this, so I said, “Yeah, but you’re not getting any of it.”, and I walked away. I suppose it’s in his blood, he was going to punch the back of my head but I quickly grabbed and threw him over my shoulder, he fell down and became unconscious. I checked if he had any drugs/money, found cocaine in his jacket and called the cops.
I guess it wasn’t really a fight since it lasted less than 10 seconds, it really shows how effective Aikido is in real life situations.
It feels good to help the police catch drug dealers/druggies.

My Aikido dojo is across from a Karate dojo. We usually get alot of rude remarks from them, such as Aikido being for weaklings.

Well, one of them challenged me, he was a white male in his 20's. I accepted of course, I never back down from a challenge.

He had really good form, but his Karate was no match for my Aikido. He delivered a great kick but it was nothing for me, I easily grabbed it and threw him down with a flip. This went on for about 10 minutes until he got too tired.

He got frustrated and left, he was about to cross the street but I stopped him from getting hit by a speeding cyclist. He didn't say thanks but it still felt good to save someone.

Aikido master here.

Yeah, it would. Let me tell you are story.

Last week I went clubbing alone, I'm a tall lanky guy, 6'2, 125lb. So here I am, grinding on this chick when this bulky black guy comes over and pushes me away from her. He probably thought I would leave and let him take her, wrong. I gently tapped his shoulder and told him to take his leave or he would feel the consequences. Of course, he told me fuck off, but I didn't.

I guess I irritated him enough and he tried to swing at me, I wasn't scared, my years of Aikido training was more than enough for this buffoon. I simply grabbed his hand and reversed the force back at him. He punched himself out.

The rest of the night there was a 4m radius of emptiness around me. No one fucks with Aikido.

Have you considered taking up Aikido instead?

It is arguably the most powerful martial arts in Japan.

An Aikido practitioner is practically invincible, no one of any martial arts background can ever land a punch or kick on one.

Using the power of the attacker, the Aikido practitioner uses absolutely no energy to knock them down.

A fearsome martial arts it is.

I'm just saying, but I could probably beat up all of you, and I'm only 5'2. This is because I am a black belt in aikido and can take on a man with 3x my weight - in fact, their weight only works against them as I evade their sluggish blows and push them such that they harm themself. The stronger the enemy fighting me, the stronger I am. This is the principal of aikido.

I used to lurk /asp/. It's not that aikido is a weak art, it's that nobody can teach it. So many dojo are either what's called a mcdojo or a bullshido. A mcdojo is like a McDonalds, you go in and buy a belt with no substance -- they are meant for money. A bullshido just sucks at teaching and will get you killed in a fight if you try to use it. Here's an example of a bullshido:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLQMvsxFoUE
As a rule of thumb, any dojo with dancing shit is probably not teaching the real art.

How does this relate to aikido? Nobody can teach it. The ones that actually try (at least outside of Asia) always make it about peace and tranquility. It is, sure, but they put so much emphasis on it that they are reluctant to teach anyone anything other than "gently push them aside. You win."

Talk to her before and after each class. If she's just sitting in a chair, or standing somewhere, go up to her and talk about something interesting. But make sure she isn't already talking to someone else.
Ask her for her email address or her IM. Do this at least the fifth time you see her if you talk to her a lot, and if she asks why, you don't have to tell her it's because you like her, just turn it around and ask why not.
Don't make fun of her if she does sloppy push-ups, or a bad counter. You can do it once in a while, but not every time you go. Try not to be too patronizing, but it could give you the opportunity to show off and help her with her technique. However some girls might take offense to any form of criticism so be careful.
While sparring her, if you get to do so, don't go too hard on her, but don't go so easy that it's obvious. Remember, she IS learning the same techniques as you, and may well feel you are insulting her abilities by going easy on her.
Compliment her on her Aikido skills after class. Girls love it when they get compliments. If she's more advanced than you, ask her to help you with a technique. It'll give you the opportunity to talk to her while flattering her skill.
Saying Good bye. When you're leaving, or when she's leaving (which ever is first), say good bye to her. The best way to say it is see you later, so the girl knows that you actually want to see her later.
Make sure you don't have anything stuck in your teeth when you talk to her.
If there are any awkward silences in your conversations, quickly say something funny or interesting.
If you're talking to her, stare into her eyes and don't look around in different places in the room. It'll annoy her.
Check if your dojo has any rules about dating someone from the class. Some have rules like this to prevent both sexual harassment and interpersonal drama from cropping up in class.

For real, what does an Aikido practitioner do against a trained wrestler?

The way I see it, if a wrestler is careful and gets into grab range he will have an advantage.
As far as I know Aikido isn't about throwing punches, and that's just great for a wrestler who's main objective is to get a superior position.

And if the wrestler would get into a superior position, then it would be over, all of wrestling is to get into the superior position and maintain it.
All of the wrestler's training would have gone into it, wheras the aikido practitioner wouldn't be trained for the same situations.

What would an aikido practitioner do?

Many of those gaijin don't speak English either. While on a trip last year, I had to talk to most of them in Japanese because they'd be Spanish or Indian and speak not a word of English.

Attention 4chan!

I recently came upon 4chan when a friend recommended I visit the sites for a few laughs. I figured "What the hell? I could use some laughs." I must say that when I came on I was disgusted and not amused at all. Why you ask? Because everything on this entire site is literally shit! I mean yes there is funny pictures posted every now and then. But honestly; Do any of you little shits have a life? I mean are you so immature and unintelligent that you find things like cartoon porn and random naked woman shaking their boobs funny?

GROW UP! Grow up 4chan. You all seriously need a reality check, You could be doing so many things in the day, yet you all choose to sit around on your fucking fat ugly asses and post pictures and then make sarcastic or idiotic comments like "tits or gtfo" and "o rly?".

Get off you fat asses and do something better with your life. I mean all of you have no life, no social life either for that matter. The supposed "girls" that come on here and converse with you are just as much losers are you, they are either fatter then fatty-tan or a term you'd better understand "A trap".

Well I've put in my two cents, and on a last note, I will do everything in my power to expose this site to people who will react legally upon this disgusting filthy site. This is not the end. It's just beginning. Grow up!

Anyways, >>13678254, please listen to me. That it's really related to this thread.
I went to /jp/ a while ago; you know, /jp/?
Well anyways there was an insane number of people posting there, and I couldn't get in.
Then, I looked at the banner hanging from the ceiling, and it had "Otaku Culture" written on it.
Oh, the stupidity. Those idiots.
You, don't come to /jp/ just because it's Otaku Culture, fool.
It's only Otaku Culture, O-T-A-K-U CULTURE for crying out loud.
There're even entire families here. Family of 4, all out for some /jp/, huh? How fucking nice.
"Alright, daddy's gonna reply to this troll." God I can't bear to watch.
You people, I'll give you Otaku Culture if you get out of those seats.
Yosinoya should be a TRU NEET place.
That tense atmosphere, where two guys on opposite sides of the computer screen can start an e-fight at any time,
the stab-or-be-stabbed mentality, that's what's great about this place.
Women and children should screw off and stay home.
Anyways, I was about to start posting, and then the bastard beside me goes "extra-shitty, with currybutt."
Who in the world orders currybutt nowadays, you moron?
I want to ask him, "do you REALLY want to eat it with currybutt?"
I want to interrogate him. I want to interrogate him for roughly an hour.
Are you sure you don't just want to try saying "currybutt"?
Coming from a /jp/ TRU NEET such as myself, the latest trend among us vets is this, extra hoop-dog.
That's right, extra hoop-dog. This is the vet's way of eating.
Extra hoop-dog means more hoop-dog than currybutt. But on the other hand the quality is a tad higher. This is the key.
And then, it's delicious. This is unbeatable.
However, if you order this then there is danger that you'll be marked by Suigin from next time on; it's a double-edged sword.
I can't recommend it to normalfags.
What this all really means, though, is that you, >>13678254, should just stick with today's 2hu thread.

Yep. Same can be said for the bigger European countries. It is a very conceited belief that English is so mportant on an international level. I have had more luck speaking Russian or German during my travels. Even in Japan, Russian was way more useful.

I went to Japan earlier this year.
I don't know what OP is chatting because it was exactly as I was expecting and I fucking enjoyed every minute. Maybe I'm not a fucking weeb idiot that expected to have been dragged into an anime plot or something.

Yes, the Japanese people CANNOT speak English. It's a shame because it'd be nice to have some conversations. I would recommend learning Japanese yourself. The ones that do know English love talking to English speakers, I can guarantee at least one Japanese person who can speak English will have a fuck off long conversation with you about wherever you come from and other things. They're all really interested in it and if they could i'm pretty certain all the others would talk to you a lot (that's why if YOU learn Japanese you'll probably have an even better time). I sadly don't know Japanese, but it's made me want to learn even more.

Food =/= Expensive.
I don't know what backwater fucking place you came from, but Japanese food is bloody cheap. Massive bowl of Chicken Katsu Curry for 1000-1800 yen. Ramen for similar prices. Nice thing in Japan is they have diners, something the UK doesn't really fucking have anymore. If you want to eat out in the UK it's either restaurant prices or fast food. Japan has a mid-ground with the diners, cheap AND well cooked. Though Tokyo is a bit more expensive than Kyoto.

As for the anime and manga people. Fucking, not everyone you see enjoys that shit. If you actually go to an anime store or you know.. Akihabara you'll find loads of people into it. I would suggest going to a cosplay meet up or convention. Outside Sunshine City I stumbled across a cosplay meet up, it had more people just hanging out in cosplay than most UK conventions have attendees, it was insane.

Only problem I had was getting a drink. Drinking culture is a little different and you might find it hard to get to a good bar or pub without paying out the ass.

I decided to take a stroll in the park today in my Aikido suit as I like to call it, the weather was great. I found myself a great spot for doing Aikido techniques, as I train, a beautiful woman came up to me and tapped my shoulder. I was so immersed in training that I mistaken her as a threat and grabbed her arm, tossing her to the ground. I quickly realized my mistake and apologized, she accepted the sincere apology of mine.

Afterwards she asked me what I was doing, I explained to her that I was practicing the ancient and mighty Japanese art of Aikido, she gave me her phone number, wanting to discuss more of Aikido.

An obvious excuse to meetup once again to have sex because I already told her everything about Aikido.

Try sukiya OP, they have some pretty cheap beef bowl and curry, and they're practically everywhere. The most expensive was about 1.300 yen I think and this was from a fresh experience of coming to tokyo a couple of days ago. I don't think they're actually healthy though but it beats spending 2.500 yen per meal.

In case you're too stupid to use body language to order just tap on the menu and show the waiter/tress the size you want and the extra side dish that you want. Goodluck with tokyo OP, not that great compared to Osaka imo.

>tokyo
>going to tokyo
>staying at a hotel in tokyo

>In fact, everything's a bit 'odd'.
No, its different. Japan =/= America you dumb fuck.

>The people are cold and can barely speak English. I'm talking 'Hello' and that's it.
Japan is not an extroverted culture, if you learned about the country before going, you'd know this.
Japanese arent being racist when they dont want to talk to you. Japanese just DONT TALK to people they dont know, ESPECIALLY in tokyo. Nobody gives a shit about you, they are busy and have lives of their own, they dont feel like hearing some extrovert gaijin's amazing life story, nor do they want to make friends with a tourist who will leave in a week.
With the japanese, if its not necessary to speak to you, they wont. Idle chitchat with strangers is RARE. Dont expect it!
Also, Very few normal japanese (that dont work in the service industry) know english, thats just how it is, since majority of english teachers are TERRIBLE at teaching and only went into teaching as an excuse to come to japan. Most of them dont give a shit about their jobs so japanese dont learn shit.

>Expensive as fuck food (bought a katsu set from katsukura at and it cost me 2500 yen)
RETARD. YOU ARE IN TOKYO. BIG GAIJIN TOURIST TRAP OF COURSE EVERYTHING IS EXPENSIVE.

>Only people I see who are 'into' anime and manga have been in harijuku. Half the time it's teenage, weaboo, white girls in costume.
Not everyone from japan is into anime and manga, YOU WOULD KNOW THIS IF YOU RESEARCHED THE COUNTRY BEFORE GOING.

Seriously, none of this shit is japan's fault, its only YOUR fault for making stupid decisions and having stupid expectations of the country.
