Has anybody tried making a paper craft mask without making a silicone mould? I made one, covered it in FRP and painter's putty, but I can't find any silicone that's not ridiculously expensive. I suppose I can try to make a mask with the paper craft base I have assembled, but it would be really thick and heavy with the putty and extra card stock.

I've done it before, back in the day. It works better if you use cardstock, not regular paper. Cardstock is a little thicker and more sturdy.

Some people like to use the fiberglass hardener that thickens the fiberglass to a putty like consistency. If you mix it just right it spreads almost like butter, and is easier to smooth on than the liquid consistency.

Me again. Haven't had time to finish this yet between work, since it's pretty time consuming, but so far I'm pleased with the results overall.

Some pros and cons;
I mentioned that the face was broken up into a million pieces. I suspect the maker modeled this like a video game or animation model rather than a papercraft model, and made it a papercraft anyway. At times I feel like I'm putting together a jigsaw puzzle. There are some pieces on the very first page that evidence this by having extremely narrow cuts that are easy to miss and would leave awkward bumps in you model if not trimmed.

On the plus side, everything is at least laid out easy to find. 9 times out of 10 when I cut a piece, the very next piece I need is directly next to it, and it's laid out so you can almost see the shape of the model on the page. Once you get past the face, the back of it is very easily put together.

Also, those gorillion pieces actually kinda work to it's advantage in the end. It may be time consuming, but the million interlocking tabs make the face nice and sturdy. I could easily see building a real kig off of this.

Mine's coming out a little big, but I printed it slightly scaled up thinking I would need it. I have kindof a big head so I thought that would be good, but now I'm worried it will look like a bobble head on me. The instructions said fit it to letter size, so I guess I should have just. I'll post more when it's actually done.

The other advantage to the higher-resolution model will be that you won't have to use as much filler as you would with a lower-resolution model. I've seen a few attempts at pepakura masks made from low-resolution models where the facets were still visible even after a lot of filling.

Also, I would recommend that you make a mold from the papercraft and make a conventional FRP mask rather than using it as a mask directly. The papercraft is going to be heavier than an FRP shell would be since the filler will make it thicker.

I'd say that conventional FRP casting is still the best way to make a kig (although there are better ways to make molds than what have traditionally been used). I say this from my own experience with making masks (as well as from what I've seen of other masks made with unconventional materials). Welp, all in all I'm thoroughly pleased with the results. Three days build time is not bad, though I had work and such in between, I'm sure I could have finished it quicker if I did it on a weekend or something.

The detail is really good, and its pretty rock solid once built. Of note though, because it's such a complex model, it's easy to warp it if too many pieces aren't lined up properly. Otherwise it's pretty nice, and even though I printed mine scaled up, it's not too huge. I will print it at the right scale next time though.

The instructions said that when complete, I wouldn't be able to just slip it on and that the back would need to be trimmed to fit. That was true, though I only need to trim off one row of facets to get it to slip on like a helmet.

For five bucks, I'd say it's not a bad deal and the end result is better than expected from my first impression.
