To be honest, the only I want to add to Japan is gun culture, that's it. Liberal gun rights and good shooting ranges.

They are what they are now as they joined the west when they couldn't beat them. We recognize them as think they're cool due to their similarity, without necessarily being aware of it.

I mean think of some really exotic yet generally primitive cultures... for example there are still some tribes in South America that shrink heads after they make their first kill and everyone just thinks that's weird and freaky.

We like Japan because it's Western. Recently people began liking Korea too as it is has also become very Western. Japan isn't exotic really, it's naught but an exotic Western culture. The same, while being just enough different to stand out.

Modern Japan is pretty Western, especially compared to the past. I think this is rather permanent.

I'd say a good comparison would be how Western Europeans perceived Russia a few hundred years ago. It was still quite exotic and considered to be "Eastern," but eventually they westernized and aren't really considered "exotic" at all these days.
Japan too may one day become completely engulfed by the western sphere of influence, if they aren't are already.
