Closing in on release date, how exciting

I should probably make 1 or 2 other backgrounds, but I'm trying to make all the patterns not-unacceptable by my standards

If you can tell me which patterns are slow and how shit it runs on phones it'll help, it usually runs alright on my HTC m8 but it chugged at certain points and I had to make adjustments

Remember to not get caught up doing boring stuff and getting bored. I like GML/GDScript more than C# because it's worse. I don't get obsessed with stuff like organizing design patterns or making perfect code. So if you're like me, don't fall into that trap, and just make something. And only make what you need now.

Back testing things after a long period of...not testing things, which shows with the amount of errors that popped up upon generating a test world, among them one that made yukkureimus and sukusuku hakutakus into sentient civilized races.

Anyway, introducing The Factory, with focus specifically the parts that are most likely to be sent into your fortress. Early in the game, you might be unlucky enough to have one of their poachers sent in to steal your children (sadly one cannot specify them to steal yukkuri instead); though not too challanging for the Suika assuming you have an actual soldier on hand (though don't underestimate them; they're far stronger then most of their minions sans the currently unimplemented redcaps), a poacher can easily kill a fairy in single combat; if he's feeling particularly like a dick, he might make it his priority to beat and otherwise bully your population for their lack of fairy children.

Late in the game, they'll send in their actual security to mop up the threat your fortress has become to their interests: these forces can usually be divided into incompetent guards which are armed with bludgeons and would much rather preform brutality on your civilians and livestock (which they do well) then face combat against your hopefully by then seasoned army, and the not so comical paramilitary organization- er, "private security officals", armed to the brim with high-powered rifles as well as aided by highly lethal (or at least difficult to kill) security robots turned offensive; the highest-ranked will have agumentations in order to keep themselves up to pace with the various horrors Gensokyo has thrown at them prior to focusing on you.

On topic of the test world, running it 2010 years led it to ending on an interesting scenario:

One of the last major holdings in the world is a kappa fortress-city (you heard that right: an entire city mostly walled in, with an additional set of walls for the keep) being assaulted by all of the Factory's forces, who had captured all surrounding towns but the capital itself. Making my first character, I wandered into a scene including dozens of bakebake harrasing the last few survivors from above, while rogue robots roamed the ruins killing everything on sight in a bloody pile.

Moving onto the first town, a group of bakebake and biokuri, being led by a human sergeant were attempting to fend off a pair of night creatures who quickly overwhelmed them and quite literally tore the majority of them into many pieces. They then overran my kappa defender and ended up mangling him to death.

Second try, I make a crossbow-kappa to actually combat the threat actively assaulting the town. Even though the bakebake were practically a non-threat, with their feeble attacks deflecting off her clothing, and died after a direct hit to their bodies, they were so numerous that she actually ran out of bolts before they all fell; nevertheless, the main horde seemed to had been routed as they ran away in fear. It was there that I did not notice a hopper sneaking behind and hastily clamping her head off; as a side note, I think I'm going to give kappa some sort of optical camoflauge as a special ability.

Third adventurer was a robot maid; this time starting in the dark fortress the Human Village had been forced to retreat into after the various monsters released by their Outside counterparts made most areas unlivable; things were mostly deathly silent as I wandered through towns that I at first thought were abandoned until I saw that the houses all flashed white: turns out synth rebels took over the Human Village and were using it as a factory for more deadly robots.

I barely manage to make it out in one piece as a group of sawteeth (living circular saws) attempted to quarter me, with a mobile barrel vacume firing some gunk in my general direction. As I flee off into the night, I think I'm safe, until I find myself smack dab in the middle of their HQ: the central AI was sitting in the centre of a complex consisting of a dozen tents of varying sizes, with hordes of angry robots occupying each. A wave of Terminators intercepts me, firing wave after wave of plasma-flavored danmaku as my own piddly laser just bounces off of them: they eventually overwhelm my poor VIVIY expy and crush her under their girth.

Which leads us to Cirno: spawn into same wartorn Kappa town, loot it for equipment (a bit hard as none of their clothing fits), daringly pass by Factory sentry robots and experiments, and face a Tschigumo; good to see that youkai still occur as well, even if their current bestiary is somewhat thin. Engage in honorable ice fairy combat, which translates to blasting it with perfect freeze and flying out of its reach, watching as it freezes to death in a most agonizing manner before its body disintegrates entirely: DF ice is a nasty. Find a kappa town that is being marauded by more bakebake as well as a pair of giant biokuri vampires; decide it to be a lovely place to settle for the time being.

Results are looking promissing; just need to add more immediately Touhou-identifiable stuff as well as youkai types. A part of me also wants to promote Bakebake into the sole playable antagonist? race, as using debug mode to play one led to fun when it got so tired from flying fast that it fell to the ground and exploded violently.

>> No.13676510

>>13676475
One major reason that people still dislike Unity exit the whole 'bloated' drama for 2D is the fact that it's not "pixel perfect" by default, or, that it doesn't do correctly by default 2D stuff.

Since you're working with a 3D engine, you have for example to understand how the orthographic works, take into consideration the scale factor of your sprites and then have a camera with the appropriate size to be able to "view" a pixel perfect world.
But then again the fact that you're viewing it like that can't hide the fact that it's a 3D world behind, so you have to make sure that your camera moves correctly without reaching float values with too much decimals or you might see the infamous tearing or white/black space between tiles for example.

Anyway the thing is that you can do 2D with Unity fine but only if you're comfortable with their 3D engine first, and even when that's the case there are still some native things that I find stupid to work with for 3D like stupid animation system incompatible with manual offsets.
The thing is, when you use GameMaker for example, you just slap your sprites, do some code and it works. Plus GM had all the tools needed to work with sprites and create animations with those goddamn offsets (yes, I'll keep on ranting about that)

For the most part ZUN is okay with people making money from fanworks as long as they're not distributed in ways/places where they could be mistaken for official Touhou media by outsiders.
Basically if you're distributing stuff through your own website, through a Touhou fansite, or through a medium dedicated to fanworks (such as an Artist's Alley at a con, or nowadays Playism) then it should be fine, but you should still include a "do not own" disclaimer at the start (and apologise in advance that the characters and tone differ from canon, because everyone in Japan seems to do that).

ZUN also tends to frown on people releasing stuff with "Touhou" in the title, because it's confusing to newcomers. "Gensou" is the most popular alternative.

>> No.13682273

>>13680291
>Free version for android
Yeah unfortunately that's not going to fly very well. Pay-what-you-want as a PC download is fine as long as it isn't hosted on massive platforms (hosting on a personal website or something is always ideal, really), but using app stores to distribute content isn't allowed mostly because it is such a massive platform. If you really wanted to distribute the app for Android you can (again) have the package uploaded personally somewhere; that's totally fine.

Really Touhou is just not a good option for building off of for the purpose of any kind of "professional" indie development. Trying to make profits (even if meager), or surfing off of Touhou's popularity to expand your own influence in a professional sense isn't met too kindly, especially when ZUN already has such lax restrictions. It should be treated as just another IP in this sense. This goes to everyone in the thread, if others weren't really aware of this stuff.

One major recent example of this is the currently-in-dev game by MyACG (a chinese group, the guys who made Defense of the Shrine), where they initially had 东方幻想乡 (Touhou Gensoukyou) as part of the title, and embarassingly had to change it because they weren't aware that it was a faux-pas.

>> No.13682358

>>13682180
>For the most part ZUN is okay with people making money from fanworks
Just a bit of correction/elaboration here; "making money" in this context is not a universal thing, where either things "make money" or they don't. Specifically what's encouraged is receiving compensation for a product, but only in the sense that these funds recover things like production costs and perhaps funding future works. When you start acting for the purpose of gaining money over spreading your fanwork to other fans, that's a commercial endeavour and generally isn't accepted, so the boundary for what's considered commercial is often more conservative than liberal. The transition for talented people to go from making fanworks to developing commercial products as an indie brand is often laudable, but you can't be using others' IP to take that step.

>> No.13682361

PSN and Ninty's E-Shop are technically fair game if you can contact ZUN about it first; but you'd need to impress him in some way to get the greenlight, as the stuff that get that blessing are Soku-tier.

Still, what you're saying is otherwise mostly correct: the reason ZUN has those restrictions in the first place is because of the legal headaches third party commercial stuff give him when they're released, which takes him away from making pretty musics.

Read http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Wiki:Copyrights - Touhou is a doujin work, and you explicitly don't need ZUN's permission to make other doujin works based on it. It's only an issue if you're distributing stuff through mainstream channels.

The creators of Magical Battle Arena didn't ask permission for any of their stuff...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXvaIYmpEMk
...and they never ran into any lawsuits, despite the large number of IPs involved. That's because it was released solely through doujin channels (e.g. Comiket) where all the customers are existing fans of the franchises in question, and no confusion can ensue.

There being tons of infringing content on app stores isn't reason to say that more infringing content is okay. We should be respectful of other content creators, not dump all over the already-lax permissions granted just because you can get away with it. It isn't like people are going to harass someone to take down a tiny app, but if you're aware you shouldn't and care even slightly, then don't put it up.

>>13684290
>well, aren't there a crapton of 2hu games anyway, i cant believe every one of those contacted ZUN about it for permission
Like I said in the previous post, you're fine by default if you aren't doing anything commercial or otherwise disallowed. You don't need to ask for permission to do anything unless it's breaking an existing rule, you aren't sure and want to confirm, or if you're trying to establish a business relationship. That's how the community thrives, but only because nearly every creator follows the given guidelines.

App stores are massive non-doujin distribution channels and so are often no-go, and generally are met with disapproval regardless. In-game ads are also entirely a profit mechanism, and are often seen as worse than just selling it for a buck or whatever. Asking people to pay a little for a product is more honest than pushing it as free yet still profiting, is more or less the idea. Recommended is just publishing the apk yourself (maybe similarly to the PC version?), but again you probably won't get divine retribution or whatever from putting it on a store.

The app store thing had two problems though, only one was about commercial activity. The other is that similarly to Steam, it's a massive distribution platform that isn't geared towards doujin works. Western fans probably find it a weirder restriction due to the smushing of "indie" and "doujin" ideas, but it mostly has to do with keeping a handle on his IP within the constraints of doujin culture, the mainstream image of what the original series is, and perhaps more generally toeing the line of "doujin" being to make works for the enjoyment of your peers.

Whatever the reasons, mass distribution outside of doujin-centric places needs permission. The App Store and the Android Market are listed explicitly as restricted, whether you're a doujin author or a company. Distribution on 4chan wouldn't really qualify due to the size of the audience and who they are; an indexed list of downloads is also very likely geared towards peers looking for these sorts of things. See the japanese Danmakufu wiki, for example.

This make it any clearer? Again, I'm not here to demonize or anything.

The App Store and Android Market are restricted for sales, but it's not clear as written (or at least I don't find it clear as written) whether they're restricted as methods of distribution. I can certainly agree with the notion that they should be off-limits but has ZUN actually written it down anywhere?

The distribution is the only part ZUN really cares about. Selling stuff is fine, as long as you're just trying to recoup costs rather than make a lot of money.

The main issue is whether you're distributing your work to people unfamiliar with Touhou. A /jp/ thread with "2hu" in the title is definitely fine.

They fall under the category of mass distribution.

>同人サークル以外の企業による二次創作、また二次創作作品を同人ショップ以外の一般流通で配布したい場合は、必ず私の許可を取るようにお願い致します。
"In the case of doing business with derivative works outside of doujin circles, or if you want to mass-distribute derivative works outside of doujin shops, you must always receive my permission." 一般流通で配布する being the relevant part here, which is like "distributing by circulating to everyone" or "distributing to a general audience". This is meant to cover the sense of producing works for people that aren't your peers (fans of the same stuff, etc). "Peers" is pretty lenient, considering basically anyone interested in doujin works would qualify, but putting it in a spot where it's available for everyone to see and grab is seen to be too far-reaching.

Additionally, there are three more things I need: a vertical bridge, a horizontal bridge, and a river water effect. You can use the pic to build the bridge for. Simply rotating the bridge doesn't work, as it causes compression to make it look blurry, so it has to be redrawn.

The other thing I need is some river water effect. Animal Island has the sea (since it's an island), but I don't think the effect will look as nice when used for rivers. I've also put the sea effect (which can be tiled together to form the ocean) as reference. I hope this helps.

Thank you, and I hope I'm not asking for a lot.
