They started as a novelty subgroup of an idol group, originally it was meant to only be one song on a few albums until the lead singer graduated but as they as a subgroup started to get more popular then the group itself they became their own group.

At first they just danced around on stage and lip-synched to the studio tracks like any other idol group, then they got a fake band to pretend-play on stage to the studio track while the lead singer started to sing live, then they started using a fully live metal band on only a few songs for every show, then they dropped the fake band altogether and even the backup dancers started to sing live.
