/jp/ has failed in pretty much every way, becoming a den of shitposters with one subject (Touhou) almost entirely dominating the board nowadays, and not doing anything to keep /jp/ subjects off other boards. It's also been stated plenty of times that /jp/ is the most tiresome board to moderate. Why hasn't /jp/ been deleted yet?

there was actual discussion, it was pretty cool to have an off-topic board for other things and stuff. Shitposting didn't become a meme until like 2010 I think.

The board took a big quality hit after that with raildex spamming, most known people left.

I think the general threads made the board somewhat worth visiting again, most long time users are pretty bored with touhou anyway.

Very different. Straight after launch was just shitposting, but it eventually settled as a sort of Japan/Random board with significant presence of Touhou and visual novels, and some self-contained recurring threads. It was far less condensed and organized than it is now. Then, later on, it became Shitposting/General for a while. Afterwards, it became Touhou/General with some self-contained recurring threads (visual novels joined the 'recurring threads' group) and became much more like it is now. Then recently the number of subjects discussed on /jp/ increased, including Monster Girl stuff and multiple idol threads (seriously, what the hell is up with all the 3D on /jp/ nowadays? I've even seen it posted outside of idol threads).

Whenever something isn't deleted from /jp/, people bitch.
This bitching often goes very far, including e-mails sent to the moderation team and stuff like that. /jp/ is also by far the board that reports the most posts.

And those mod/janitor-mocking meme threads? They're posted on /jp/ all the time, without even requiring any provocation. The moderation staff is just so used to them that you barely see them because they rarely remain up for long enough. You should check the archives, when you see all threads including deleted ones you'll notice how many threads like that we get.

There were a lot of threads around that would be labeled shitposting today, but back then funposting was a collective effort and more often than not it was related to something on-topic in some way.

At some point "funposting culture" became based entirely around bashing staff and blogging about stupid shit instead of TYPE-MOON and washing machines and we lost it.

Is it? Because having been here since 2008 I pretty much agree with it (though it isn't the work of a single spammer/group of spammers as much as the board culture change that went with it). Shitposting DID become a meme. At some point, the term started being used a lot for a specific style of posting, and some people felt it was the cool thing to do.

>>13282726
The difference was the threads back in those days originated and prospered from genuine desire to discuss stuff, even if the discussion was completely inane. What is generally called 'shitposting' is posting obnoxious and/or contrarian stuff simply for the sake of spoiling people's fun and/or fitting in with the shitposting crowd. (It's basically trolling except for the part where proper trolling must be amusing.) /jp/ back then simply didn't give a shit about staying on-topic.

Back in 2011 all we had were constant Sion and irc crew spam until finally ZUN!bar was banned pretty much for being the object of complaint (while there were plenty of other problems you could have used to argue that he was a bad user).

While sure, we had the AorF bot spam and raids against us in 2008-2010 (in particular the Katawa Shoujo raid by /a/ sponsored by moot and the Cornelia bot raid by /v/ when it was revealed the bot that caused captcha knew about VNs meaning must be us) they didn't cause the sheer amount of hostility within the community until then.

The Sion shit posts covered 3 or 4/10 topics on the front page hourly and people would be baited into all of them so they wouldn't fucking disappear.

Oh, the original /jp/ meido giving up the position after Cornelia bot and Anonymous-san (the only mod that cared about us) getting fired didn't help.

At least they tended to leave other people's threads alone, as opposed to trying to shit up every thread on the board or hijacking other threads on the occasions that their spam got canned. It takes a special level of spite to spend three hours spamming a Comiket thread with retarded shit.

No, it's pretty accurate. All old /b/ did was talk about Type-moon and Azumanga all day while posting stupid image macros about lens flare and thrust vectoring and V-TEC.
It went to shit after people started raiding other sites and then descended into being just a porn dump board.

Old /jp/ just talked about Type-Moon and Touhou all day.
...Then it went to shit after people started raiding here because of autism over MMOS, Moot's dumb jokes, and stupid anti-mod shit. Now it's devolving into a "SFW" 3D idol/doll/monster girl porn dump board.

The best thing I can say about /jp/ is that there never formed some sort of culture of bothering people about other things like /a/v/b/ formed. There was no offline protests against stuff, no calling in pranks to TV shows and game stores, no sending pictures of dicks to artists they like, no masks, no GG shit, Hotglue's actions in MMOs and resulting autism was just the results of NEETs having nothing to do but grind 24 hours a day. It's just a self contained board that shit pours into instead of out of. (with /vg/ being an exception, but /jp/ should have been merged with /vg/ upon its creation anyway).

I was there during the glory days of 2008-2012. We could freely post NSFW images. If you have a topic you want to discuss, you were encouraged to make a thread and make a presence.

Whenever Comiket or Reitaisai rolls around, lots of people posted links to content. We'd get as many links to games as we did soundtracks. Guys like Hong and Remilia regularly contributed to the community by posting download links to doujin scans and games.

Shitposting and meme-spouting was common, but back then it was generally understood that it was just mindless fun, and nobody took it seriously.

Nowadays, /jp/ has been taken over by fags that believe they're somehow entitled to an environment where serious discussion takes place. NSFW pics have been banned.

The general threads are a cancer: The front page is filled with them. A few fanboy faggots make a Kancolle/VNs/etc thread, and every post relating to their respective topic goes there. That means even if there's very little to talk about pertaining to a "general" thread's subject, even infrequent posts will allow them to remain bumped up in the front page because every relevant post gets put on their respective general thread.

Comiket/Retaisai threads have turned to shit. Download links for events are at an all-time low--They're mostly soundtracks, and too few games.

Shitposting is taken too seriously, and guys can't blow off a bit of steam here. While the frequency of shitposting has been reduced, when there's significant shitposting, they get put where they're needed the least: The Comiket/Reitaisai download threads. They get derailed into bitchfights between posters about whether people should be "thanking" each other--It seems /jp/ tries to make up for the lack of shitposting nowadays by re-allocating all the shitposts in the Comiket/Reitaisai threads, discouraging posters from uploading new content. The two aforementioned tripcoders have been driven out due to the fact that they were tripfags.

Way to go, dipshits.

I also feel the same way about the touhou high score general and the kancolle general. Both are threads befitting /vg/. If someone wants to make a thread about a 2hu or a boat, that's cool, but not as a general where the same few questions get asked every time. JAV threads and onahole threads can go in /hc/. Even the rhythm game thread should probably be in /vg/, even though it's the only general I actually use.

How is fapping to japanese 3d porn otaku culture? How is asking the same game mechanic questions over and over otaku culture?

It didn't fucking help that they were hounded due to their tripfaggotry, nor was the fact that we had dipshits arguing over thanking each other.

>Our major Japanese uploaders died on us. We still get everything that shows up on PD, but people tend to buy/rip music more often than they do fangames.

I've been curious about this. What exactly has happened that has caused Japanese uploaders to be on the decline?

I'd like to understand the root cause of the problem, because I can't stand this new wave of Chinese uploaders--I don't have a problem with the idea of Chinese picking up where the Japanese are failing us, but some of the fucking Chinks have been trying to assert exclusive rights to offer pirated content by getting buttmad whenever their downloads get posted on their non-Baidushit sites.

>You're free to make a thread about an individual VN (or a Kancolle character) if you think anybody cares enough to post in it with you.

I do make my own threads--It's just a lot of the fags here don't, and someone who never posts on general threads, all I see nowadays are a bunch of near-dead threads effectively meta-pinned to the front page of the board because dipshits keep posting things on general threads when they were better off making their own dedicated threads.

They do one around every two days, which is about how long it takes their previous thread to 404.

>How is fapping to japanese 3d porn otaku culture?
/jp/ actually kept JAV threads out for a while before everyone stopped caring, trying to argue that any other board is a better fit for Japanese masturbators is a losing proposition.

>It didn't fucking help that they were hounded due to their tripfaggotry, nor was the fact that we had dipshits arguing over thanking each other.
People have been giving trips shit since 2008. It was their personal issues that did them in.

I did like RemiJAM but a lot of what he did was repackage PD releases, and these days his successors have that under wraps. Time marches on.

>What exactly has happened that has caused Japanese uploaders to be on the decline?
I have no idea. I've heard that the vast majority of uploads were done by one or two individuals who just moved on with their lives but I have no reliable source - I think people observed that the usual hashcode was gone.

>because dipshits keep posting things on general threads when they were better off making their own dedicated threads.
Ever seen someone make a thread for an individual Kancolle character? It's so laughably sad you could cry. As for VNs - most of the people who care enough to discuss translated VNs at length do it in /a/ or /vg/, and not enough people play untranslated games to support individual threads in /jp/. You do realize that an inability to make a thread that people would be interested in is no excuse to shit up the front page with a bunch of artifically generated general threads that don't get much attention, right? That's not so bad I guess, but compared to many of the other generals, and /jp/ itself, that's very, very fast. I also notice that I often see multiple new threads popping up once an old one dies, or maybe that's kancolle.

>trying to argue that any other board is a better fit for Japanese masturbators is a losing proposition.
I imagine that the porn boards were resistant to the posting of JAV there at the time?

>You're free to make a thread about an individual VN (or a Kancolle character) if you think anybody cares enough to post in it with you.
A big problem is a lot of people don't venture outside the generals or are willing to post in a new thread, generals essentially become "micro-boards" due to them being constantly chained and alive where they develop their own culture, "Memes" and userbase. In the same way people get defensive over "Board culture" and "Crossies" people in generals react the same.

Rather than people giving up it's more because of a lot of users leaving especially after Tokiko spamming the whole board and everyday the mods just doing a purge leaving the board with 2 pages however after that stopped due to the lack of remaining users who cared and the leftover overly strict moderation didn't allow the board to self moderate by shitposting threads to death like it did before.

Random old-timer passing through.

I don't know why people talk about the tripfags and shitposting when talking about the good ol' days. For me the best times of /jp/ were the super long NEET threads talking about depression, assburguers and random stuff in a serious manner, I used to participate and read them as much as I could, I even used to wake up early just to read all the threads I missed, for me that was the real /jp/ not the circlejerk of shitposters from an IRC channel. At some point those good threads stopped existing, there was nothing good to read in the mornings anymore.

A few years passed and I became a normalfag, I have a job now, my own apartment and just live a normal life, I don't really miss the old /jp/ but I do have very nice memories of it and it was an important part of my life. I can see why people might do this on a non Anonymous site, to gain credibility in the community and whatnot, but here there's absolutely nothing to gain from someone reading a single one of your posts and thinking that you have been here for a long time or that you're a good poster. Do you think there are people who lie about this anyway? Or maybe it has to do with how satisfied we are in our lives outside 4chan. I kind of think that the quality of 4chan at any given time is subjectively dependent on how satisfied you the poster are with you everyday life.

I've been here since 2008, but I occasionally have to double-check stuff in the archives to make sure I get my historic facts 100% correct so as not make people think I'm a 'fake oldfag'. What do I have to gain? Credibility. When I say 'no, you're wrong, that's not how the Ixrec/age/MangaGamer thing went down', it's a lot more believable if I actually was active in the community at that time. I've been here since day 1. There was a lot of uncertainty about what the board was supposed to be about, 'Japan Culture' was the title at the time and people kept coming here thinking it was a place to discuss traditional samurai and modern art.

Some of the things I miss are being able to organize flavor of the month MMOs with /jp/, something we had from the beginning but 1 mod's misinterpretation of the board led to them all being deleted and banned and religion = loli because someone was posting 'loli as fast as they could' in a religious debate thread that popped up.

Oldfag here.
So, you want to know what /jp/ like was in it's prime... Well, let me tell you-
/jp/ is where the true oldfags and the highest of powerlevels reside. Most people on /jp/ have seen more anime series than 10+ average f/a/ggots combined. In addition a lot of people on /jp/ can watch anime without waiting for subs like you fucking faggot babbys. Generally, /a/ looks to each other for approval of things, while /jp/ looks inward at itself instead of relies on a hivemind mentality. Also /a/ has no OC besides shitty image macro memes that get old within a week; /jp/ translates VNs, games and has doujin translation teams that regularly post there. People at /jp/ know your own boards' subject far, far better than you do, fucking dream on if you think you have any kind of superiority in any way whatsoever.

We sneer at you fucking newfags/normalfags, your shonenshit Big 3 threads, quasi-/v/ mentality and everything else that makes /a/ suck fucking balls. /jp/ is a better board than /a/ could ever dream to be because most of you f/a/ggots are, in our eyes, eternal newfags, aka there is nothing you could ever say or do to bring yourself up to our level, because you aren't true oldfags. You're G/a/ia, you're ANN and MAL trash now. Stay away, we don't want you in /jp/, not now, not ever. I still laugh at how 4chan doesn't understand what sage means.

If only I knew moon so I wouldn't have to spend time on a board that imports foreign concepts and then DOES IT WRONG all the time.

Using sage as a way to "insult" someone's post or thread is just completely wrong and a retarded misuse of a good feature that is so popular in sites like 2ch and Futaba. Fuck, iichan and 4-ch do it right. It's just 4chan and 4chan's lame knockoffs that fail at using sage.

The true meaning of sage means that YOUR POST isn't worthy enough to bump the thread. It's ironic, because you think that you're insulting others while you're just, in fact, insulting yourself. Yes, sage can be used when posting a derogatory comment in a thread that you don't want to bump, but posting with just the word "sage" accomplishes nothing but contribute to spamming the board. The trend of replying with the name of a tripfag and sage is even worse, as it accomplishes nothing and only serves to increase the e-penis of whoever you're "attacking".

The sage feature was never meant to serve as an implied insult or general disagreement! Why people started using it that way is beyond me. There are plenty of reasons why one would choose not to bump a thread with his reply. For example, bumping threads with stupid one liner replies should be discouraged and those people should be coerced into using sage instead.

I want to use sage, yet I almost never do it on 4chan because people will jump on me thinking I'm insulting their post or something.

>The actual butthurt Touhou shitposters don't help KanColle characters threads from taking off either.

Now that was something you newfags did do right. The rise of Kancolle and the popularity of the shipbitches was so forced and engineered, it was excessively sheepish how all those Touhou doujin artists flocked to creating Kancolle works all of a sudden--Couple that with the asinine region-locking and the anti-consumer lottery registration system that persists to this day, the shitposting was a nice little way of getting some payback.

That just makes it even fucking worse. You're artificially generating demand by deliberately picking and choosing customers, thereby marketing it as an "exclusive club". They're not even trying to make a game that stands on its own merits and fucking over users that might be interested but can't be bothered to come in every other day at 7:30pm JST.

/jp/ has always been shit, and I don't mean that affectionately. Never was hugely active posting-wise but lurked heavily from creation to around late 2011, and from there occasionally would pop in just to see what's going on. I only pass by nowadays every 5 weeks or so.

My perception of /jp/:

Early on it was indistinguishable from /a/ in terms of identity, though that was expected. That was when /jp/ was at its best though.

Then into late 08 it started to settle in to its identity as basically super duper elitist /a/ without anime, generally manifesting in this annoying passive aggressive tone. ("LOOK AT US. LOOK AT HOW MUCH WE SAGE. LOOK AT HOW MUCH WE *UNIRONICALLY* HATE JAPAN YET KNOW THEIR LANGUAGE. LOOK AT HOW RESISTANT WE ARE TO 4CHAN CULTURE. WE ARE THE NEXT LEVEL.")

Passive aggressiveness turned into ironic shitposting, which led to le ironic shitposting and TRUE NEET era. Also annoying tripfag worship and drama. /jp/ was never worse.

The mods eventually started cleaning things up and now /jp/ is just boring as hell. Content wise it's as worthless as ever. /vg/ and /r9k/ basically do what /jp/ used to except 10x better. It doesn't even have a point anymore and I don't see why it hasn't been deleted. Should have been deleted years ago and if it were up to me it would have never been made.
