Questions about Aizu or your trip in general?

How is travelling during GW?

I was in japan for 55 days. This is the 3rd time I have gone to Japan. I have lived in Japan for a total of 180 days over the last 3 years. I am an adult working corporate drone. I can take this much time off by working and banking my OT.

I went to a lot of places:

Osaka - 1 week
Kyoto - 2 days (lived there for 2 months last year)
Nagoya - 4 days
Nara - 2days
Kanazawa, Hakone, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Chiba, Nikko, Takayama, Utsunomiya, Koriyama.

Tokyo - the balance of the time. I rented an apartment in downtown Tokyo for the entire trip and booked local hotels when required.

I went to Aizu because it was there. This thread, web cam, etc, probably had something to do with it.

Golden week is manageable after being here for a while. I wouldn't recommend it for a first timer. It is a little disconcerting when everyone is Japan is out on the street during GW. The news reported a 45km traffic jam on the first day.

If you are coming here for GW, don't be like the stupid tourists who try to book the week or month before and are surprised when there is no availability. I had everything booked in December.

I like going to Japan because it is well organized, consistent and the Japanese people are, for the most part, kind hosts. I do not self-identify as a "weeb". Japan is not better than home. Just different.

I have another 2-5 more trips planned.

I will respond to additional questions.

It might have, I didn't dig to deep. My theory for food is, if you are hungry, look for the place with the line up out front. That's the place to eat.

I was in Aizu for 5 hours. For the most part, I stuck to the tourist bus route and saw the sights. The bus came about every 30 mins, so you had to be mindful of the time at each location.

I did walk away from the station, nothing foody jumped out at me.

They were really emphasizing the laquerware. Every stop had a laquerware stand.

My default Japanese meal when there are no other options (or visible lines of people) is: onigiri and tea. I had both when I was at the castle.

Sounds like you had fun. Do you travel alone or with people or have contacts in Japan?

Since this is your third extended period of stay I presume your Japanese is decent then. Is not slightly more difficult travelling outside the main metro urban areas like to Tokyo and Osaka to rural places like Aizu in terms of how they cater to foreigners and accommodate English language skills?

>> No.13442897

>>13440797
I did have fun.

Years of traveling for work got me accustomed to traveling alone. I don't mind traveling with others, but I am not going let not having someone around to prevent me from going somewhere.

My Japanese is garbage. N4 on the best of days. Maybe a 500 word vocabulary. I know it's garbage because Japanese people drop "Nihongo ga o-jozu desu ne!" (The earlier in the conversation this is said, the crappier your Japanese is. I usually got it on the 2nd or 3rd sentence). This is where the NEET/Weebs have me at a disadvantage. I have to work. They have the time to actually learn the language.

I think I was spoken to in English twice while I was there. Walking around, some high school girls started saying "Herro". Leaving, the JR worker said that "only stair", which meant that there was no elevator or escalator at this location. I said "wakarimasu" and mimed bicep flexing. He laughed.

The most challenging and longest conversation was with the apartment caretaker lady. She gave me a 10 minute discussion on how to deal with the garbage. I nodded, said "wakarimashita" and then grabbed a bunch of photos with my phone and looked up the city pdf on garbage.

I am not having any meaningful conversations with anyone in Japanese.

I can buy food. Sign up for a points card. Bought shoes. Get directions.

Miming goes a long way. Smile and be polite helps as well. You may discount the following, but wearing a suit and tie (business formal) totally goes a long way. Most gaijin look like they just survived a concentration camp. I took my suits this time (wore "business casual" previously). It might be confirmation bias, but I believe that the suit bought me a little more social grease. Suits are the perfect camouflage in Japan.

I know a few people who live there. Aside from meeting for a coffee or a meal, I was on my own 99% of the time.

part 2.

In the cities, the English signage is good. Out of town, print out maps, use google maps or learn to ask for directions.

Example. Going to Aizu, the shinkansen ticket was printed in English. On the way back, only in Japanese. I assume because they don't expect non-Japanese to go to Aizu. If you were familiar with the English version of the ticket, you would have figured out the Japanese. Or used google translate if you didn't understand moon runes.

Having an unlocked phone and a local data sim card is a big help. Look up timetables in Hyperdia. Google maps. Translate. I know I would have to work harder without the internet. My piss poor Japanese wouldn't cut it without the internet.

One of my future trips planned is to do a 1500km cycle tour. I'm guessing I will need more Japanese and less reliance on the phone when I am out in the inaka.

I know what you mean, it has to do with your upbringing.

I don't know if the people in the US know about this but emotions work both ways, emotions that you feel and emotions you can make people feel.

I know how to make people agree with me and make them laugh and I can also easily make friends anywhere I go, I'm hated by almost all the elderly men near my house, they won't let me get near their daughters because they know what I can do lol.
