I've never really understood what exactly the deal is with artists and Meiling's eye color, and I've never seen it to a similar degree with anyone else in the series.

I've personally run with the idea that she and Remilia originally met up in the French Concession of Shanghai. Not only does it give a reasonable explanation as to how two character from significantly different parts of the world an excuse to meet up somewhere, it also ties in nicely to Meiling's theme.

From my point of view Meiling seems the type of youkai who eventually just tried to settle in and live with humans, between the fact that she not only doesn't look like a youkai at all, and that she hardly acts like one as well. Then perhaps she and Remilia cross paths in some little teahouse, or Remilia goes out for a nightly bite and finds a meal that can put up a bit of a fight, etc.

And Remi decides she'd like to have her own personal Chinese Yaoguai, just for the novelty of it. She'll figure out what to actually have her do when she gets around to it.

So... I actually had a dream kind of like this last night. Meiling was guarding the gate, but she was now "the youkai of the impregnable fortress," or something like that.
