>docs.google.com/forms/d/13a8QHOhDX44j6O22EsN3L73AwNTezr22gnWfIlRNAig/viewform

Remember to ask for VNs that haven't been already translated. Don't ask for VNs that have been licensed by JAST or other companies. And for the love of god, don't ask for more nugikes.

Some suggestions: Dies irae, Oretsuba, ChuSinGura 46+1, Albatross Koukairoku, White Album 2, Akatsuki no Goei, Baldr Sky, Material Brave or Soukoku no Arterial (if you like some gameplay).

You may think this is a waste of time, but it really isn't. It will take you five minutes.

Has anyone tried to just sell this stuff from Japan?
Instead of licensing for official sale overseas bamco could just sell translation as overpriced DLC.
Similarly VN producers could just put a bilingual version for sale on DMM. That way sales happen in Japan, following Japanese law.
Skirt around voice actor contracts and music licenses that has clauses for oversea sales and what not... But I suppose that would break copyright laws or whatever.

That sounds like a good idea, but I doubt it'd work out very well. The only English-speaking people who'd buy iM@S like that are those already in Japan, and those who will go the extra step of getting into the JP store. I don't think it'd be worth it for Namco to put in the effort of making translation, when most likely a small number of people will buy it. If it were to happen, I would think the translation would come out as some mangled machine-translated garbage.

With the (moderate) success of titles like 999 and Ace Attorney in the west, there could be some profit, right?

It is true that there is a lack of puzzles. And adding puzzles could be shoehorned in, I am thinking of the steam room in particular, or the various "games" that were played in Ever 17.
I don't think they would do that, as when they tried to go back and add content (like the original endings to Remember 11), they forgot what they had planned to do in the first place.

I think that it's not literally impossible to see an eventual Monobeno localization but I believe that it's extremely unlikely to see it because there's not a lot of ground to defend that character as being of legal age.

And yeah, they don't really make an effort to pretend that she's of age, and on top of that the game is really long and licensing costs would probably be high thanks to the fully voiced protagonist, so don't expect an official localization ever.

> //<0194>「はい。メイドが務める喫茶店でそのような習いがあるとかで、参考にいたしました」
>// Yes. It seems the maids are taught this at the cafe they work at, and I used them as a reference.
This one's a complete disaster. Mistranslated both とか as "it seems" when it should be something like "for example" or "things like" and 習い as "are taught" when it should be "is common practice." Lastly, it should be "a cafe where maids serve you" or something along those lines, not a place where maids go to work.

>「サービスで、オムライスにハートマークを描いたりするそうですよ」
>// It seems they also do things like drawing a heart on your omelette rice as a service.
"Service" in Japanese != "Service" in English. It's not a service, it's a bonus or a treat. Not sure where "they also do" came from. It might be okay in context, but it's not there in the Japanese.

>//<0171>「それ、ネットで見たことあります。電気街にあるお店ですよね」
>//I've seen that on the internet before. There's a shop like that in the electronics district.
Mistranslated 電気街 as electronics district when it should be electric district, which is the nickname for Akihabara, or basically "trendy downtown." The second sentence is a question, not an assertion. "like that" is made up. お店 is mistranslated as shop when it should be cafe as previously established. お店 can refer to all kinds of things that Americans would not call shops at all, including restaurants and clubs.

But you're just shitposting, so let's hear that "all that matters is I can read it" or "close enough" or "that's just your interpretation."

I've played all games I've asked to license. There are plenty of reasons for it:
1) Expansion in western market generates new revenue for original developer and lets them make better new games, which in turn affects me.

Though I've never seen it as DLC, I have seen Japanese games feature dual language (Japanese/English) before, primarily Phoenix Wright for DS and some of the Yu-Gi-Oh! games. Apparently it does make more players import the game. No idea why they haven't experimented further with this.

Depends entirely on the marketing. The core VN fanbase wouldn't be interested in the slightest, as we already have access to them all. However, I think that if Aksys or similar would license them there would be money to be made, as only a fraction of the 999/VLR fanbase has played the infinity series titles. Yes and no. The English-speaking market's core userbase (that follow and buy the latest releases etc) is tiny compared to Japan's. However, there's a huge broader potential userbase that's difficult to reach (Aksys and the like manage to tap into them properly, Sekai is succeeding pretty well too) and there doesn't really seem to be such a thing in Japan: Either you make VNs for the hardcore VN fans or you fail commercially as you won't get enough 'mainstream' sales.

The games I asked for were 'Root Double' and 'kamige in general'. I'm aware that Lemnisca will translate it, but I'd love to see an official release for greater exposure and an easy way to support the original developer (and the translation team if Lemnisca does it; otherwise it'll free up Lemnisca to do other interesting stuff which is also a positive thing). Well, an official release not by JAST, that is; I'd like to see it released before 2020.

For the main qualities, I selected 'Interesting story', 'Favorite genre' and entered 'Interesting/fun atmosphere'. For companies I selected 'Liar-soft' and 'Overdrive' (yeah, I loved Kira Kira, like Deardrops and am looking forward to Bokuten, though I didn't like Edelweiss and wasn't interested enough in Dengeki Stryker to check it out).

In the additional comments, I typed up a huge wall of text about
a) Why I was a loyal customer but haven't bought from MG in years (lack of good releases);
b) How I'm open to non-intrusive DRM (one-time serial activation) but not to intrusive DRM (installing shady software);
c) The fact that I'm interested in good titles by otherwise mediocre publishers like Navel's Oretsuba;
d) How I'm open to all-ages versions when the porn doesn't contribute to the story and was obviously added in because of market demand;
e) That they should make a separate mailing list for people not wanting to receive 'Buy Bukkake Ranch and Boob Wars now!'-style e-mails for nukige; and
f) Some explanations on my answers to earlier (multiple choice) questions.

Funnily enough, when it came to the 'how much did you buy' questions, I found that in the past year I've bought over 6 games but the answer to 'how many were from us' the answer was 0.

If they do plan on releasing it at some point, my patch will likely fuck them over, as no one will want to play the original when you have a fancy remake with high production values to play instead.

Regardless, the game's script is identical to the original, with the exception of removed lines from the now censored h-scenes; so I'm using Makoto's translation.

They're free to use my work in any way the want, without credit or notification.

All I care about is letting more people experience one of my favorite VNs in its best form.

I do think there is something wrong with it, but it is still a fact that mangagamer hasn't done anything about it (yet) and that the game will not get a physical release if it is not bought.

I don't really mind though because I can afford to pay 50 bucks every few months for a game I want, and I also like to give the company as much support as possible.

I simply consider the physical form an extra on top of the original anyways, a sort of limited edition, so I don't mind paying again.

I'm not going to pay for the game twice at full price it's as simple as that, if Mangagamer could offer me even just a 50% discount for a physical copy if it ever at all gets released then I'd gladly buy the digital copy right away but even so without either a limited edition or limited physical release it's not a high priority purchase for me to buy and I'd much rather spend my current money on JP Limited Editions or figures that I know I won't be able to get apart from at a higher price afterwards, a digital copy is always going to be there no matter when I buy it, there's a huge lack of incentive for me to buy it right away. The #1 game MangaGamer needs to put out is Oretsuba. No idea why they're still putting out Shuffle games when they could be putting that out. Comparing Jackson's writing to some philosopher's is unwarranted. Yes, there's no way you can translate a variety of extremely nuanced Japanese speaking styles into English, and the best way to enjoy Oretsuba is certainly to learn Japanese, and some subtle lingual cues may be lost in translation or awkwardly transmitted. But good prose by itself does not make a VN, the concepts and intents conveyed by the prose are what make it so unique and worthwhile.

#2 is Baldr Sky. Only #2 because I think a fan translator will do it eventually, unlike Oretsuba where most translators won't because MG should. If this gets a version put on Steam with the H scenes cut, it would instantly make VNs respectable in the Western game community. If a VN like 999 that has an "okay" plot and decent gameplay can get a sizable Western fanbase, then a VN like Baldr Sky that has amazing gameplay and an amazing plot would get far more. The major obstacle I see is the loli who runs a sex toy shop, I'm not sure how Giga would feel if her character was modified (for those not aware, her presence is what got Baldr Sky banned from TVTropes during their lolicon purge). Well, there are tons of "not for kids" scenes in Baldr Sky besides the explicit ones, anyway.

Ikusa Megamo Zero would be another big hit, though it could never make it to Steam. I don't know much about WA2 but it does deserve better than a mediocre translation. Dies irae would be a big hit because of all the hype at the very least. ChuSinGura 46+1 would be a nice surprise, and smart since Raindog/inre doesn't seem like they'd refuse. It's not as long as people think, either.

For example, the concepts behind the characters, like what happened in the past and how it affected their personalities, and the way conversations characterize that (like flashbacks, the parallel world). Hiyoko's speech patterns aren't that nuanced, so do you really think only a genius translator could let English readers understand what's great about her? The whole route serves to illustrate the complexity of her character, and while it's true that a shitty writer could make it so boring I'd have quit, even just an average writer would have been enough to keep me eager to see and learn more of her, because she's that fantastic.

If you'll actually read my post (you won't), you'll notice I didn't say anything about Oretsuba being untranslatable. It's not. What I said is that it would take a skilled translator a long time to do it, and that there's little point in bringing it over with a bad translation. So unless you manage to raise your Edward Seidensticker from the dead and convince him to translate Oretsuba for MG for a pittance and give him a few years to do it, your point is invalid (and doesn't have much to do with what I posted in any case).

Unfortunately, back in the real world, Koestl's about the best we've got right now and VN translators might have a year or so at most to translate the equivalent of 10+ standard novels (and Koestl, at least, has a day job on top of that). With that kind of timeframe it's just completely unrealistic to attempt to preserve the feel of the text of someone like Jackson, which in Oretsuba's case is the entire fucking point. Other games have enough of a plot to carry them despite their poor translations (I'm thinking FSN here), but Oretsuba is not one of them.

Yeah I'm sorry for going off on you. I think I just got pissed when you said that you'd need a really good translator, and for me Orestuba wasn't nearly as difficult as something "literary." Most of my anger stems at moogy for making those stupid tier lists with "untranslatable" sections.

2nd paragraph is spot on. Orestuba is the type of game where you'd need a better knowledge of English than Japanese to translate, although you'd need better than average of both. Part of the problem with fan translation is that people study Japanese and then neglect to study English, which leads to a technically correct translation but not necessarily an enjoyable one. I guess this is understandable, because with few exceptions (Soshite Ashita no Sekai Yori, Orestuba, etc...) VNs are plot based and written like young adult novels so as long as the plot is preserved then it's mission accomplished. I think for the medium to grow up people need to demand more from translation, as there's currently a cult of personality set up for translators due to the rarity of the good being translated. But just because something is free does not mean it is exempt from criticism and people need to demand more quality.

You already knew this so I don't know why I just lectured you. Sorry. The reason I read VNs is because I'm not good enough at Japanese to read literature yet and it's an interesting way to tell a story. Sex is fine too, and people can write good sex scenes if they put their minds to it. Thanks for reading my pretentious, obnoxious post and again I'm sorry for yelling at you. じゃあね.
