why do き and さ look similar? This is surprisingly hard to look into via google.

Pic unrelated

There's probably an NHK world documentary on it somewhere.

because they have pretty much always sounded and looked similar, and that's carried through into the modern alphabet

What I'm confused about is that there's literally a one stroke difference between the two, but they don't sound similar, nor (form what I can understand offa wikipedia) did they even come from the same kanji? Did they just end up looking the same as they were simplified over time? Usually characters looking the same implies some sort of connection between them.

Why do I and l look EXACTLY the same

Most of my students had the hardest time telling the difference between d and b, p and q. Ki and Sa don't even look similar, good luck getting into katakanas シ and ツ you dip shit.

Though.....I guess the same can be said of M and N after all. I was curious if there was something along the lines of U/V/W at play here

Really? They're nothing alike.

I can maybe understand asking about ツ and シ or ソ and ン but having trouble with ki and sa is pathetic.

This anon gets it, I don't know where anyone got the idea from that they're confusing/I'm having trouble with them. I just found it noteworthy that the only difference between them is a single stroke.

I and l look -exactly- the same because this is a sans-serif font, ya dingus

Why do p q b d ɑ ɡ all have the same loopy thing in it? Because there are common elements that show up as things are simplified. even though their origins Π Ϙ B Δ A Γ look nothing alike.

they're probably based on similar kanji

kana are all based on segments of kanji you know

You guys are real retard. Kana (both hiragana and katakana) was derived from the cursive scripts of kanji. It's just a coincidence if some of them look similar. Nothing to do with sounds.

>> No.12917272

Katakana are derived from fragments that make up kanji, dipshit. I don't even read Japanese and I know this.
