The grind isn't that bad. I play on high ping and am sort of demotivated. You can get 60 in 2 days (~24 hours) if you know the correct methods and you're on a class that can solo alot of stuff (i.e not a Priest or Mystic). Killing BAMs is pretty satisfying. A new expansion released for the NA client tomorrow, increasing the level cap to 65. If you have a way to get ahold of XP boosts, leveling is much easier.

I would highly recommend NWN1. I don't think there was a game I played more in my youth. NWN2 is also good and retains many of the charms, but I simply don't think you can beat the enjoyment of playing NWN1 again and playing through the story, which admittedly I never finished. NWN1 and NWN2 still have reasonably sized online communities, actually.

Well, I play on 230-260, but it usually hovers around 250. Maybe I am whining a bit much.
A lancer is actually the class I want to play the most, but I've read and been told that having a high ping makes it hard to block in time for alot of hard hitting animations endgame. I've got a level 24 lancer that I started leveling a while ago and didn't finish off. It's possible in the reading I've done they are referring to PVE and PVP in general, whereas PVE would be much more suitable for me because of high ping.
I might give it a go then, thanks for the motivation. What server/guild are you in? I would love to play an MMO with /jp/ because I've never done so before; I was just in TIE but then I stopped playing a week after I joined.

I enjoyed the Russian beta and really liked the concept of the whole game, it just wasn't the same.

There's a grind to get the relic to i125 now.
First step is grind out 12 atmas from FATEs in 12 different zones.
Next is complete 9 books that cost 500 soldiery each. Each book needs you to kill 100 trash mobs, do 3 semirare FATEs, do 3 dungeons and kill the last boss, and 3 leves.

Next step requires 75 alexandrite. You can get a map that drops one for 400 soldiery, 1 per day from a daily quest, with hunt currency, or a super low drop rate from FATEs. Also need materia to fuse to your weapon.

Next step is to grind out 2000 "lights". The fastest way of doing this is essentially kill Garuda HM ~750 times if you get lucky with bonus windows.

The next step involves something like 6000 soldiery, 80k GC Seals, 300k gil, and desynthesis and grinding all the dungeons in the game for a semi-rare drop.

I wish Peria Chronicles was loved by everyone and received priority funding.

Nothing will ever be fun to kill monsters pointlessly in as RO, nothing will have interesting combat and be permanently hardmode like early Mabi. Modern MMO games also all have shitty looking UIs. I don't even know why I bother trying new MMOs. Peria's content creation system is all I have left to look forward to. Tree of Savior will probably be boring. All it's hype is from nostalgia.

If Peria doesn't pan out, I'll have no choice but to stick to Mabi. I wish Japan actually made and released fun and cute MMOs in the west and kept them here, instead of gross realistic ones. ECO is the only one I can think of that lasted here a while.

RO was fun because it wasn't "endgame is all that matters" bullshit. You saw those few peeps that were max level shining like some blingee mother fuckers in main towns and you wanted to be like them. Maybe not even max levels, just dudes using strong gear (which were strong because of status effects or bonus quirks, instead of just being higher numbers) you saw killing shit better than you, which made you want to kill shit better too. It was social without actually forcing you to interact directly with people, despite the fact that you were just grinding shit.

Not to disagree with you as your point mostly stands in regards to modern games, but the whole "healbot" ultraniche thing goes pretty far back. Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot are at least two games I know of whose Clerics (or equivalents) were wholesale designed to keep people kicking and not much else, and I'm sure if you combed through the early 2000s and mid 90s you would easily find other MMO spinoffs that were designed much the same way.

Oldschool MMO design was based around the idea of mutual co-dependence. Tank, DPS, Healer. There were variations thereof but it pretty much stuck to the trinity. As a side effect, it had the interesting effect of helping foster communities, as people who more or less had to work together interacted with one another and bonds between people formed. Soloing was possible but a grossly inefficient use of your time.

I much preferred it to modern MMOs where you seldom need to meaningfully interact with anyone at all.

RO's priests classes were strong as hell against undead and dark or demon enemies. They could go into niflheim or something and fuck shit up.

RO was good in that it had builds without hard skill trees. There were requirements but you could still make different builds with the same class, due to all the skills. Also for having crafting classes as actual classes and not some side skill. Even though it resulted in having alts to do that kind of stuff I liked the idea that you had a character who was a crafter and their fighting and game life were built around that profession. Also stuff like Sages and their anti magic fields.

I don't like how modern games are either classless/free class change or just have 1 tank 1 dps 1 healer 1 ranger and then maybe add some extra damage classes to fill out stuff. Mabinogi sort of gets a pass for having an assload of skills but it really cripples cooperative play in that game.

I also miss RO's job change quests and billion cities.

I don't think I'm cut out for MMOs any more. I used to play fun cutesy games like Fiesta, Flyff and Seal Online but today's mmos don't have the same pull even if they have a similar look. Tried Aura Kingdom and it felt pretty awful, hoping Tree of Savior lives up to the hype at least a little.

Actually FF XI was worse with WHM or BRD. You couldn't do jack shit alone. EM monsters would just tear you down.

I was doing more solo with my Druid on DAoC that I could do with my WHM on XI. The biggest issue with DAoC wasn't the class but the specs and you couldn't respec easily (Drake Stones only for complete respec).

Full Nurture Druid weren't doing that badly. Smiting Cleric and so on... could undertake orange/red monsters in PvE (granted it takes ages) and could still 1v1 decently in RvR.

Yeah its not open world, the campship is basically your hub and you select missions to teleport down to planets to kill shit. Some areas are considered MPA's (multiparty areas) where you are automatically in a sort of sub party with anyone who happens to be in that area, so you can just sort of enter a mission and work towards a common goal with random players without the fuss of finding an actual main party.

You also get a player room to decorate with stuff and a few areas to hang around in the campship but otherwise its pretty much instanced areas for each mission.

I played the pre-open beta for Closers and I'm definitely hoping that shit comes to the west, it's been a while since I've played an action based MMO that's actually FUN from the moment you create a character. I tried TERA a few days ago. I got to level 15.
After seeing how it's instanced and how it has global chat, I didn't find it hard to quit.
I mean, a massive multiplayer game where people are separated by magical instancing? And where's the sense of distance if you have means to communicate with the whole server instantly?
Plus even that global chat was so slow. That made me feel the whole thing was deserted.

The PzIII was my favorite tank in the German tree. But when I got to tier III with it and had to constantly face an enemy team with over half of their tanks being everything from KV-1s to IS-2s it just stops being all that fun. On Scarlet Blade they said they'd make "unnoticable" changes to the Sentinel because she was a short 18 year old girl that could potentially be seen as a child if you ignored all facts and twisted it as much as possible. And you don't need to have to deal with that, right? Turned out the "unnoticable" changes were to cover her entirely in gray and call her a robot. Complaints were made and they backed off a little. They allowed some parts of her robot exterior to be skin colored, but she still had to have hexagons to show it was a robot on her naughty parts and here and there to show it was not censorship, it was artistic design changes. So now the game had a robot wearing underwear to cover her not existing spots. Still charging the same amount as the nudity on other classes.

And on top of charging, their method was to let you buy gacha boxes for 250 dollars a week to be allowed to win a free vanity item for having spent so much money. Which pretty much translated into everyone needing to pay 250 dollars a weel, or 1000 dollars a month to enjoy nudity in a nudity centered game. There was a 500 pages long feedback thread stating the whole thing was insane and would make people quit. But since it was "only" 100 unique posters, they brushed it off as "just the same people complaining".

As far as I know, majority dropped the game but Aeria was still happy because the few rich idiots still spent 2000+ dollars a month on the game and it was enough for them to run minimal effort server management.

But yea, if you don't mind stupid censorship or nudity in a nudity game, the F2P was pretty ok. Just that it had no longer anything unique to offer that not 100 other titles has.

As for EME, that was a real rollercoaster. Started with complaints about Elin censorship. But they wouldn't budge. Petitions were made, but they were ignored because "It is impossible to gauge interest on the internet because people will cheat", even though the censorship was a decision done because of 2-10 people's opinions. Best part was that Elin haters got to post as much as they wanted, but pro-Elin posters got constant thread locks because "Someone could take offense if you write that you like Elins" (in contrast to nobody taking offense when told they are disgusting scum abusing children).

I managed to contact the CEO and ask him 4 questions about the censorship. He was kind enough to make a sticky thread to answer my four questions with "We are censoring Elins. End of discussion, now shut up."

Later they added swimsuits uncensored and I took the opportunity to both congratulate them for stopping with censorship, and telling them this is proof the censorship never was needed and it would be nice if they could undo it. I did however complain about the 25 dollar rip-off for one piece Elin suits, which they defended with "no other race has them, so we can charge whatever we want as a bonus item for Elins".

The same week I was about to sign up and play for the swimsuits, even though they were overcharging, I got banned on grounds of "never contributing". No warning, even though it was in the rules that you would get 3 warnings before a ban. Minea had simply gotten personally annoyed with me and screwed in all rules to get rid of me.

Later I petitioned for a ban removal (1 year later), but was told by support that bans can not be undone because they are bans.

Overall, worst customer service ever. And they will never admit to being wrong or correct wrong doings.

I was hoping to find good private servers. But it is a bit tricky also. For example one I was hoping to be finished were talking about putting all vanity gear at endgame bosses because to them it was meaningless and only works as gloating gear.

So I'm trying to get jRO working. Of course their registration site blocks filthy gaijin, so I thought I would get a VPS, SSH into that with PuTTY, and run IE through an SSH tunnel.

After Vultr's Tokyo offering failed me (still got the message about non-Japanese IPs despite whatismyip.com confirming it was in Japan), I'm using Linode. Worked fine to register, and after I realized that IE was trying to download some sort of add-on when I log into GungHo's site and attempt to start the game (I'm not used to IE), the patcher is failing to download updates now.

Keep in mind I'm only used to iRO and never had to deal with this launch-from-browser bullshit or proxifying everything, so I'm pretty lost. I thought the proxy was only needed to register and not for actually playing, so the game shortcut launching GungHo's webpage in IE and needing me to log in there to launch the game patcher seems odd, and then the patcher failing to download a file isn't filling me with a lot of hope.

I'm playing Age of Wushu. It's really confusing and there's almost no information about it online, which actually makes it more interesting to me. I haven't had an MMO genuinely confuse me with how much shit was going on in it since I first tried to play an MMO during my tender underaged years.

The gameplay is pretty fun though, and it doesn't seem p2w so far. All in all, I'm having a good time.
