People have various reasons on liking idols, and how attractive someone is, especially sexually, is not necessarily the main criterion for all.

For example, with HKT as a new group with young girls there's more of a feeling that you want to protect them or cheer on them like daughters. Since they're still in the middle of improving and growing up (also means less developed/exploited characters, which you describe as "devoid of any interesting traits"), there's also a feeling of excitement on how the girls and group are going to develop over time. For most girls they seem relatively average idols at the start and then find their character and what works for them over the years.

If that kind of feelings steer you towards idols, then a girl like Maiyan would be completely boring to you since she's perfect, mature, successful etc.; there's really no development for you to watch over, and your impact on her success as a single fan is lesser too.

It also sounds like you don't know some of the girls; despite of being ponkotsu Mio is actually markedly mature and professional, for example she gets mad when other girls fool around or act childish in shows like Odekake.

I'm a fellow Nogi-oshi, but I think I still understand why many people like HKT, even if these aren't necessarily how I feel about idols.

HKT has only had 3 generations so far, so they're pretty young as a group. New talent for the AKB groups are always young so HKT will be young overall. I say give it time and see what HKT will be like in a 2-3 more generations. First of all, it's not as simple as you say, for example Haruppi centered Hikaeme even if NakoMiku are getting their push. Secondly, how does who is in the center in any way affect observing the progress of the girls? Sakura has never centered in HKT, but how much she's matured and refined over the years is a huge discussion among wota. Even for girls who never make senbatsu you can easily observe their development through LODs, TV shows, G+ etc.

Natsu is a month older than Haruppi, so age hardly seems to be a factor there.
