Does anyone here have experience of playing MMO's on Japanese servers?

Have you gotten into a community alongside with any of the groups? Guilds?

How was the experience in your opinion?

I assume you can speak really good Japanese, because they shy away from foreigners. I made a mistake and used a particle I wasn't supposed to once and everybody (20+ people) filtered out of the room in 2 minutes by telling their buddies stuff like "oh dude, we should go WAY OVER THERE and grind, just because it looks sunny over there"

>> No.12644361

I've played a few. Trickster was ok but people tended to avoid me when they discovered I couldn't understand them (this was 6 years or so ago).
Last MMO I played from Japan was @ispace and we got in trouble with the GMs for speaking English

Oh hey, just kind of when I needed some help from /jp/, anyone mind helping me in translating this?

I know it's some kind of a welcome mesage but I really want to pinpoint it to an accuracy to fix what makes it blow up, I've been invited to play with some old friends from Japan again, but I'm currently on linux and I think it would be nice if I could help people with linux be able to run this game as well.

One of my (borderline normie) friends and his brother played a monster hunter MMO on the Japanese server through a proxy. He ended up being banned because he said "hi" to someone, and they figured out he wasn't Japanese or something because of that (that's what he says anyway).

Apparently they just communicated with smileys based on context (such as ":)" if they killed something or ":(" if someone died) before that. He doesn't speak Japanese, so I have no idea wtf he was doing.

>> No.12644766

I was on a japanese clan on SMT: Imagine and they openly knew I was foreigner, my moon was enough for the gameplay mechanics and a bit of casual chatter.

There was this high school kiddo who loved america and always tried to chatter with me in english, good lad.

Thankfully the clan died after we cleared all the end game instances, because the international server migration pretty much ruined the game.

Hey guys. I am a Ragnarok Online private server administrator. I don't want to advertise or anything.

If you guys have any questions about new contents, or about what it's like running a server, go ahead and ask.

>> No.12674976

>>12674932

What IS it like running a server, and how populated are you? I would imagine that running one of the bigger operations with 100+ people on at all times would eventually turn into a job... Smaller community servers were always nice because you could goof around and make some memories with people, but there was inevitably terrible stuff that came with community divides. As a user, whenever I got tired of a server or people's crap, it was nice to be able to just sort of move on, do you ever get the urge to just wipe everything and start fresh?

>> No.12675002

>>12674976
My server runs at about 80 people, though we've had 500+ on the golden days, around 2008~2009(though I only became a staff member late last years).

We've been around for almost 10 years, since the first emulators, so a good portion of our population is made up of people who have been here for 4+ years. I, myself, played it for almost 8 years.

Running the server in itself isn't difficult. You just leave it on and it runs itself. Like most servers, we have a small script that reboots the server in case of a crash. Periodically you have to do maintenance and implement new content, specially if you're a heavily customized server like the one I am running.

From a technical point of view, it's quite simple as well. The entirety of Ragnarok Online is written in C. Literally everything. The NPC scripting is done with a game-specific language that's identical to C structure, but has its own commands. Here's a link for reference:

http://buwinow5.tripod.com/

The database is an MySQL interface. GMs get a HTML version that's easier to work with. Then the game itself runs on a Linux machine, but all you really need to do is navigate to the directory and run the file.

Any half-assed technician could do it, but making the calls is where the problems are. Balancing classes, balancing items, continuously adding content, hosting events, fixing bugs. You also have to deal with other staff members, who often aren't as serious as they have to be. One in about 10 GMs is competent to do his job.

Also, wiping anything is the absolutely last thing you ever want to do. Nothing will upset players more. It's a last resort. We had to wipe players when we changed emulators(our old one didn't allow 3rd classes/new content), but to keep them happy, we let them keep cosmetic items. Worked great, but a large number left nonetheless.

Being a senior staff member is actually fun, despite everything. It's like playing an RTS game, but with real people.

Why do you guys seem to hold japanese people on a pedestal to the point of using VPN services specifically to play on their servers.

As far as games go, Japanese people have consistently demonstrated that they're really bad at any sort of game requiring cooperation, and good at single player games (The cooperation required in monster hunter is a joke by the way).

That's why they're shit at AoS, shit at MMOs, shit at competitive FPS, and really good at fightan.

Granted, there are exceptions to any stereotype but even in FFXIV, Japanese players tended to be floor decorations more often than their western counterparts.

I won't deny, there are people out there who glorify ALL japanese people for no major reasons whatsoever.
But it's also true, that in general the japanese are more considerate and patient towards each other - or at least amongst themselves.

Exceptions are everywhere to both good and negative examples, humans are mostly the same anyway, no matter where they live.

I've only played once on a japanese server and on that one example, the players were good in both manners and skill. Don't know how my experiences would be with other games played amongst the japanese.

That one game was Soldier Front, a shitty online FPS that I played many, many years ago.
One of the maps was called "Castle", with a medieval theme, mostly stone walls and a small church in the middle.
Teams were split into 10-10 people as far as I can remember, red team had to guard a suitcase in the church for X minutes, blue team had to steal it and take it back to extraction point.

I played mostly on red, we rushed into the church, took up positions and waited for blue to invade.
People with machineguns in-between the benches, 2 others behind doors for surprise-counters and 2 snipers behind the altar looking straight at the door.
Blue team would have to come in through that one entrance, they mostly used smoke grenades or flashbangs and stormed in, gunfire everywhere amidst the smoke, it felt like I was part of the scenario from old Hellsing's first episode.

Most matches were like this, exciting and fun, until my account was banned 4 days later, since they didn't want any foreigners playing.

I believe that was the right way to play the game, because meanwhile on western servers, on the same game people would just run around spraying with their machineguns everywhere until all enemies died. Not once did anyone properly defend that fuckin church.
And this was the "good case".

>> No.12682099

>>12682084
(cont.)
In the bad case, which was still 4/5 of all matches, people used hacks to freeze the enemy team at the start and after 2-3 minutes of waiting the game would start and about a dozen grenades would instantly blow up, killing us all.
Not to mention all the invincible hacks or the more annoying wall-glitches when they hid behind structures, only the barrel of their sniper rifles hanging out and shooting everyone throughout the whole map in peace.

Or I could mention my guild on Tera;
it doesn't matter after how many weeks I log back on or what time of day it is, they mostly just spam guildchat, calling each other "Gay XD" and that's it.
Sad thing is, most of them are over 30 years old.
Only damn reason I'm still there is because of the acces to all materials in the guildbank.

Ofcourse, there are good and mature guilds in the west too, but I think there might be more idiots and kids here.

Ragnarok Private Server owner-guy here. Nice to see this thread still running.

Anyway. Personally, I am brazilian myself, but I am also well aware of the way my countrymen play MMOs. The BR population more than tripled as soon as they found out a brazilian was going to run the server, for some reason. I can also attest that groups of BRs will almost always universally share accounts, in a way that a large group of people share everyone's accounts. The problem with that is that brazilians are corrupt cheaters by nature, so it leads to them stealing/hacking each other at about 70%+ of the cases.

Also, for some reason, they think it's okay to ask for gear and favors for no particular reason. Back when I was just a normal player, ever, I'd get asked to join BR guilds/parties, which I promptly refused. Apparently, not "sticking with the pack" is not a very well seen behavior. I was even called a traitor. One time someone said I was "a dog licking the gringo's boots". Shit's awful.

That said, brazilians are capable of amazing feats in online games. Not just numbers, but sometimes one or two people stand out as good players. It's not a coincidence they take over so many MMO games.

>>12681517
I mean, maybe you're exaggerating a bit. Though, I'll agree on the fact that a large swath of the Brazilian MMO community is unpleasant or "vile". It's come to the point where I try to pass as an American as much as I can since merely stating you're from South America carries some heavy connotations with it, and it really does change the way people see and interact with you.

It's mostly because of the language, I think: it intrinsically carries culture within it. If you go to an American server, it is your prerogative to put up and start speaking English, or be unwelcome in general. But the MMO community here still doesn't get that coming into a server and speaking nothing *but* Portuguese and badly-mangled English is tantamount to rejecting that MMO's culture and imposing your own in it; it puts us in a bad light. Some people also do it for fun and to spite other English speakers, which is even more deplorable.

It reminds me of the time I used to play Pangya Online. The South American server had to unfortunately shut down due to financial difficulties, so the Brazilian population migrated over to Albatross 18, the American server (and in some small part, the Asian server). Nobody really knew or didn't want to speak English, to the point where the situation got so bad, they had to IP-lock Albatross to keep the Brazilians out. It was a sad day when I had to go over with a friend to the Asian server, where we didn't understand a thing.

I've wasted most of my free time these past 4 years playing Japanese server MMORPGs. Off the top of my head, I played Finding Neverland Online, Dream Drops, TERA, PSO2, 幻想神域, and now I'm giving Hunter Hero a try.

Incidentally, I've always joined guilds ASAP and everyone always knew I was a foreigner, but I never got banned for it. I think as long as you're polite and type in Japanese nobody really cares, those rules are just there for RMTs and annoying groups of foreigners speaking their own languages. Most guilds are actually pretty excited to have a foreigner with them, I made a lot of friends.

Join a guild. Sometimes they advertise in town/world chat, sometimes there's a guild board. Either way, be sure to message the GM or advertiser first. Tell them that you're a foreigner but you'd like to join their guild if it's okay. When you get let in, introduce yourself as being from (your country). It's a good conversation starter. Every now and then, bring up something about the time difference or living in (your country) in guild chat for the people who weren't there when you joined.

Eventually you'll make friends without needing to use your foreigner status as a conversation starter and then you're golden.

I want to try playing TERA on Japanese servers, but I both don't speak Japanese, nor do I have a Japanese cell phone number. How did you get your account, where were you playing from, and what was your latency like?

>> No.12724800

>>12724781
Besides the usual non-Unicode-settings-to-Japanese stuff, TERA requires Vistalizator to trick the client into thinking you're running Japanese Windows. You will also need a proxy or VPN to get past the IP ban, and there's some incredibly slow and obnoxious GameGuard stuff that loads up every time you log in.

The latency is pretty awful. I only played it for a couple weeks before moving on, couldn't handle it.

Most games are not as bad about this as JP TERA is. Usually you're fine with just a JP IP address, and some don't ban by IP at all. Blade & Soul doesn't have an IP ban, for example. I suggest giving up on JP TERA and trying something else.

Might have something to do with there being no localization anywhere in sight. Last update on it was 2 years ago now. I'm not sure if it's a TERA killer, but it doesn't need to be, TERA will die a natural death before they release B&S in the west.

>>12725198
Man, I remember having to do that on TERA launch (not on JP server, though). There would be dozens of people at boss mobs you needed to kill for the main quest. It wasn't even that the respawn timer was high, problem was the tagging system required you to both be the first to hit the mob and deal more than 50% damage to it to get credit for the kill, so with all those people there spamming attacks, hoping to be the first to tag it, no one would get credit. Of course, since it was a western server, people making queues would be an exception, even though it would have been quicker for everyone that way. Most places people would just stand there for ages trying to tag first, or just start killing people.

FFXIV's system is alright. You always get credit if you tag it, and you can also get credit if you contribute enough to the kill. There was this MMO called Wizardry Online. It features permadeath, full loot PvP, an outlaw system and so on. Sony made a western version of the game but it was years behind the Japanese version. They fucked it up so bad that they had to shut it down next year.

There are a lot of people, especially in central Europe, that have an irrational fear of niggers. Not because they ever had any actual reason to fear them, but simply because they have never seen a live nigger in their lifes (blacks only appear in major population centeres and France over here). Humans fear the unknown, apparently.

I would assume the same reasoning applies to Japan. They barely speak any other language than their own, foreigners usually do not stray far from the tourist hotspots thanks to the language barrier. This self-imposed isolation would lead to xenophobia over time, I guess.

It's dead. I think the members that still play are in other guilds. I wouldn't be surprised if it came back after the 65 patch, I still see Ridalen online occasionally (assuming he has glead). Would be nice, always liked playing with /jp/. Much better than those fags in TFT.

I want to play jRO but i'm quite lost, is it free? Is it too p2w? I don't really care because i'd just play with some jpsies but still.

If you are not wasting it then it was never free time.

My main was in NFA until I stopped playing, and I got cleared out at some point while I wasn't playing. I assume Ridalen was the GM of TIE? I would love to play with /jp/, having never done it before properly in any MMO..

I assume you came from MMOs like Neverwinter or something and decided to have some strange interest in WO?

It was pretty fun IF you got into it and had people ready available at every opportunity. Even IF for any reason you could easily play in any version ever of the game you would have communication problems without your own Guild and succumb...

Also, SOE didn't really fuck it up in any way. They're just retarded like always and shut down games before they're even given a chance to shine like they did with countless MMOs, like The Crew and Star Wars Galaxies then publish super casual shit like Landmark instead(as if The Crew didn't sound/look bad enough).

Basically no one cared enough to give into the game's cash shop to begin with since going with an active Guild pretty much guaranteed you any of the things you would ever want, game was easily farmable IF not for the shit drop chances of decent gear, which made me join an actual Guild instead of leading my own small group a long time ago. It was bound to die in the West, even the best Guilds didn't give into cash shop.

Sorry to say, but you're not getting another chance if you don't live in Japan. All I know about the Japanese version after I quit is that there is this thing meant for Windows Phones...if it works any similar to the ECO version meant for Windows Phone in Nico Nico Apps, it probably lets you play without proxies.

Good luck if you decide to try it out, never did and never will.

Remember when we could talk about specific MMOs in /jp/ before that guy got mad no one wanted to play Wizardry Online with him and whined in /q/ until a rogue mod started deleting MMO threads?
