It seems I can't write simple romance. You know, the second draft I talked about? I was trying to write down my plot in order to avoid making shit up as I progress.

And I don't know how, I don't fucking how, but somehow it went from :
>an outsider is you, go meet some touhou and do fun stuff while getting closer to Futo
to:
>you are a narcissist obsessive manipulator trying to cause a youkai/human war by using the Taoists and the Buddhists, in order to use the chaos you caused to return to the outside world unnoticed and sabotage an American special operation aimed to destroy a Chinese research/tourism lunar base called Chang'E for prestige and economical reasons, just because you have a personal grudge against one of the member of said operation, before the world collapses around you, and preferably before Yukari figures out what's going on and gaps your entrails in a smelter
It woulda contained lot of backstabbing, complicated political stuff going on in the outside world between Japan, USA, Great Britain and China, implications that Yukari fucks up with the outside world a lot by sponsoring not-totally-ethical researches, verbal sparring with Byakuren herself, and of course the lunarians.
That's not cute nor easy to read (especially with my broken English). So back to square one.

I appreciate someone offered his help for the backgrounds, but right now, I need help with the story, because each time I try to write something, it turns out like this. I should write sci-fi conspiracies books, I would become rich very quickly.

I've been spending the week collecting data, taking notes and writing minor characters based on /jp/ regulars while pretending to be an intolerant anti-youkai bigot, so this week end, I'll definitely write. A bit.

And also repair Deus Ex so that it finally works on my toaster. And install Invisible War. And Project Snowblind. And get Human Revolution's Director's Cut to do a stealth run without being forced to have a shotgun and an assault rifle in my inventory at all time.
Through I kinda liked the boss battles, it felt like the game saying "hey, you can't constantly avoid everyone, so here's that 2m50 tall german golgoth, kill him, and I don't care if your only weapon is a pistol".

wow cool

yeah, I'm fairly familiar with gamemaker but it's all self-taught. I've never taken coding classes or anything, so I'm not familiar with the "best practices" of coding.

But I'm figuring out your stuff, like I said I've got new characters and them saying new things.

a question though - if I wanted to set trigger variables (as in, Marisa always says 'hello ze' the first time you click on her, but after that first time I flip a boolean and now she's on another pattern) where should I declare/store those variables?

>> No.12681653

>>12681626
I tried to make adding new characters as easy as possible. The hardest part of that is setting the sprites. I didn't comment much since most of the code was straightforward.

Creating variables is easy in GM. Anything not prefaced with "var" is a variable belonging to the owning object. So have a boolean like has_met that gets set to true when you talk to an NPC. And if has_met == true, then display another string instead. You can store it in any NPC object. You should also declare it somewhere beforehand so the game doesn't crash when it tries to access a nonexistant variable.

One thing I didn't do was multiple dialogue support. You could try implementing that so NPCs can say more than just one line at a time.

>> No.12681708

>>12681653
alright, that was simpler than I thought it would be. I'd forgotten how lax gamemaker is with its shit, no wonder it was my favorite language. I have to pretend like I know c# for my job and I really have no idea what I'm doing everything is so complicated

My plan for where I want to take this, is just to make a cute thing you can have open in the background, where various 2hus come in and out and you can check in on them and stuff. So, more like the Animal Plaza on the wiiU than an actual AC game, but.

Open your eyes wide, the MAGNIFICIENT Ddyk will give you some divine advice to make your game better (because it's easier to give advice to someone else than working on your own game and I'm looking for excuses and also because I have a messiah complex) :
-make sure girls don't hide behind trees, or at least not unintentionally,
-maybe less funny maymay, armpit jokes and 9 jokes are getting old, even through that depends what kind of public you're aiming at,
-make the text faster, dang it. It's slow as fuck,
-Patchouli hovering around is fucking awesome,
-no Yorihime? That's a 0/10.

As for the rest, I reckon it can wait. Being able to shake trees and have bees coming out of them would be sadistically fun, or having buildings where you drop touhous and mix them can wait too.

My motivation flanally came back, I'll be working more seriously from now on!
To do list :
- you choose the origin of your sinsack in the beginning of the game (30 yrs old wizard who opened a portal to Gensokyo, suicide, etc.)
- Sekibanki and Rumia will be in your party. Also Hatate has a big role in the plot.
- The demo contains the SDM, the fairy and the Hakurei faction. All of the cast is romancable (and fuckable, if you don't screw it up)
- To get along with Patche, you'll need to improve your intelligence. Raise your charisma if you want to score Remilia.

The problem is that it's a complicated dialog, with several branches.
But more than that, I'm having trouble with implications. For example, I want to suggest that one speaker is having mood swings when sensitive topics are brought up, while the other is constantly calm.
So naturally, I'm thinking of using exclamations marks to suggest she's getting angry when the player talks about her being dead. But when I read it again, it sounds like she's excited rather than being angry.
And I don't want to rely on narration to explain her mood, because that feels like I'm shoving it in the player's face by basically saying "HEY SHE'S ANGRY. BECAUSE YOU TOLD HER SHE'S A ZOMBIE GHOST. SO SHE'S ANGRY."

A reoccurring issue I see with indie game design is the inability to stay interested in a project. It is not that they lack the techinical ability to finish it, it's more like they get side tracked by new projects or life. I've paused development on several projects.

Is the music in that game copyright free; where did you get it from?

I know your game is free but what exactly would happen if you were to put a price tag on your project. Would that get you into trouble with ZUN? I haven't read ZUN's license in a while but I don't recall him mentioning anything about westerners being allowed to use his IP. (Note: Japanese people tend to be xenophobes.)

Any pointers on generating bullet patterns. I wish there was a tutorial on how to make them. Do you use a bunch of equations with sin and cos, or are the bullet patterns very staged i.e., coded in several lines of spaghetti code. My trig is not where it needs to be.

Lastly, have you thought about emailing ZUN and letting him see your project. He might get inspired from it.

On the artists page there's a comment string asking if someone can use it in their game and the artist said they decided it's free so it's ok (I hope that's what it said..) and I think one of the songs is in CtC

I'm not totally clear on the rules, but I have a gut feeling setting a price wouldn't be kosher. What I basically told myself was that it should be no more infringing than other products on androids store. As for banning westerners specifically, hadn't thought of that. I figured if there were other apps like it I could put one out too

Bullet patterns, I started with trying to replicate patterns I thought looked nice, I think that's good practice. Id get a notepad, break a pattern into phases, and try to guess where each bullet is going and why (from a location perspective, not gameplay perspective)

I did think about sending an email in the past along the lines of "so how badly do I need to shut all of this down"

Oh wow you're right, you have to be signed into Google in order to get the one click thing. Moot is a retard. Why not just make anonymous accounts. He's basically relying on a 3rd party system to validate his users. A good login system also has a trust system in place. The coding logic for such a system is so easy a child could do it:

1) When the user first signs up make them solve a capcha and make them validate their email address.
2) Make them enter captchas for n days and n post. After they've entered enough post they will obtain trusted status and will not have to solve the captcha. This will separate the good users from the bad users. It is not profitable for a spammer to wait n days just so that they'll be able to get past the captcha. And even if they did, their account could be rejected with a ban hammer thus forcing them to wait n amount of days for a trusted account. This trust system would also encourage users not to shitpost in fear of getting their trusted account suspended.

This system would be 100% anonymous. People seem to think login automatically translates to everyone being forced into name/trip faggotry. Moot is a smart cookie and realizes everything I just said but wants to make a profit from 4chan Pass.

Please do not comment on things you do not understand. I will repeat this: a login system does NOT have to include names or any identifying information. With such a system there would be zero changes to 4chan's layout. If I'm a trusted user there would NOT be an icon next to my post saying that I'm a trusted user nor would there be a way for users to know their post count. You are the poster boy for why moot has not done such a system in the past. You immediately assume a login system means sigs and post counts.

If I misread your response explain to me in detail of how this anonymous system would lead to a circlejerk. Has captcha lead to a circlejerk? Protip: the system I'm suggesting is 4chan Pass without the pay clause.

I used to be able to post on 4chan by hitting tab twice (or was it three times?) and then enter. It just keeps getting worse. I'm pretty sure even 4chan's pass system discriminates against shitposters. Also, the proposed login system does not mean the mods have to always reject a user's trusted status. The mods could just do what they normally do and temporarily ban a user. The mods would probably only reject trusted status if the user is blatantly spamming advertisement links or is using a flood bot. Are you trying to defend the status quo? Do you like the captcha and 4chan Pass? Or maybe you're just shitposting.

The original purpose of the captcha was to thwart spammers, not punish normal users. An anonymous trust based login system would just give a way for good users to post normally. If I've solved 100 captchas and have never spammed, chances are I'm not a spammer and I deserve to be captcha-less.

Agreed. In the same way that the terrorist won, the spammers also won. After 911 all Americans had to deal with the TSA and NSA's mass surveillance program. The actions of 19 hijackers negatively impacted the lives of 350 million Americans. And now because of a few spammers captcha has affected the lives of thousands of users.

How much post have you made today? If your answer is 70 that means you've solved over 70 captchas. If I had a dollar for every man hour that was wasted on solving captchas I'd have a lot of fucking dollars. The proposed anonymous trust based login system would have stopped spammers and saved hours, but moot wants to make a profit from Pass so what can we do. Wow, I just heard about this. The way ZUN micromanages his IP is shameful. The Touhou project really isn't the equivalent to the GNU project. In defense of ZUN I suppose he wants an equal playing field and doesn't want the funding of someone's project to overshadow smaller projects. That's a great mindset to have but at the same time it kind of prevents innovation. If the GNU project had that same mindset we would have never gotten a Debian or Ubuntu. I think such a mindset will hinder people who could take Touhou to the next level. A website like Kickstarter is mostly used by indies. A single charismatic person could do a lot of great things if they're given a free market. What Mark Shuttleworth managed to do with Ubuntu is a perfect example. And ZUN has decided that he's not interested in having people who need this motivation working on blockbusting Touhou Project works.

>> No.12784560

>doesn't need a small army of programmers
If you're just trying to make a 2D Mario clone with Touhou sprites then yes you don't need an army of programmers. But if you try to make something big like Smash Bros with Touhou characters you're gonna need a team of developers and artist.

>he's not interested in having people who need this motivation
The vast majority of people are motivated by money. To deny this would be silly.

>> No.12784561

This is why such threads or western fangames to that extent will never improve.

See? We barely have some touhou games than people are already debating whether they can sell such games or not.

>See? We barely have some touhou games than people are already debating whether they can sell such games or not.
Two things. Firstly, maybe the reason we currently lack games is because we don't have the same financial incentives that the Japanese have in their doujinshi circles. Secondly, are you really complaining about others who are concerned they won't be compensated for their work. Some projects take years of hard work and dedication.

>But if you try to make something big like Smash Bros with Touhou characters you're gonna need a team of developers and artist.
If all you want is a fighter there's Hisoutensoku, and there's also quite a few 3D Touhou combat games out there already.

>The vast majority of people are motivated by money. To deny this would be silly.
And therefore, the vast majority of people won't work on Touhou Project, which is the way ZUN wants it. He's not operating a corporate empire whose goal is to maximize users and/or profit.

>>12784566
>Firstly, maybe the reason we currently lack games is because we don't have the same financial incentives that the Japanese have in their doujinshi circles.
The majority of doujinshi circles operate at a loss even if you ignore the massive opportunity cost of making the thing because it costs them a few hundred dollars just to go.

Don't you think you're projecting a bit much? I don't know of any producer of content that didn't want to make as large a profit as possible, or spread their product to as much people as possible. If he didn't care about profit I think the Touhou games would be free. Secondly, if he didn't want as much people as possible to experience his product I doubt he'd have a license that allows people to use his characters. Very few people on this planet are saints. Richard Stallman is probably the only person I know of that rejects money for his beliefs.

Maybe *you* don't want as much people as possible to experience your products, maybe *you* don't care about making a profit.

>> No.12784614

>>12784608
>Don't you think you're projecting a bit much?
No, because ZUN has explicitly said that he wishes for Touhou Project to remain within traditional doujin distribution channels.

>Secondly, if he didn't want as much people as possible to experience his product I doubt he'd have a license that allows people to use his characters.
He wants people to be free to create their own derivative work and then sell it at Comiket. The one reading extra information into that is you.

>> No.12784618

I pose a question to you guys. What would have happened if ZUN allowed complete freedom with his characters. There would probably be several professional animes and AAA video game titles out, but I wonder if it would kill or enhance Touhou's indie/doujin following.

Making a game requires 5x more work than a story. Not only you need backgrounds, sprites, pictures, musics and sounds, but you also need to write everything.

In your average CYOA, the writer only needs to write one path. In a game, you need to write them all and be sure they make sense.
Writing a story is a damn walk in the park compared to writing a game.
