Definitely. Although the manga is extremely close to the original games, they should still be played for the atmospheric experience.

Although you might want to wait for either the new Mangagamer release with the better translation (with either the original R07 sprites for a completely vanilla experience, or their new sprites that you can switch back and fourth between), or you can wait for the PS2/DS mod that GuraGura is making.

Speaking of which, is there nobody from the Umineko tweaking site that's willing to help out with doing voice patches?

Looking at that picture, I think that the MangaGamer eyes will need to have a more prominent colour contrast in its normal pose to achieve the same effect. The pupils are too small for it to stand out.

In this case I actually think the Matsuri sprite looks generally better than the Kizuna sprite, though the Kizuna one has a rather interesting effect of making it seem like her eyes are rolling upwards in some sort of possessed trance. Vanilla one doesn't do it for me.

I ended up loving RGD. The first third of the first season was a bit weak, but it gets awesome and stays that way once Caleb is introduced.

It's all about political/economic intrigue, noble-minded folks fighting against society's corruption even though it seems they're doomed to fail, and crazy over-the-top "saving the day" action scenes like in the Festival Accompanying chapter of Higurashi. Oh, and Rapunzel is the cutest.

Also, it's hilarious how clearly Ryukishi is just doing whatever he wants with it. There are acerbic critiques of the Japanese people and the modern Japanese political system sure to piss of the 2ch commentators, and some parts that are just like summations of Wikipedia articles he found particularly fascinating.

I found it good though the beginning is a bit of a drag since you don't really care about what is going on. By the start, you just get cliche type characterization until near the end of ep 1 where it becomes decent-ish as you understand why Rose is important rather than just have an airhead be in charge. Her growth towards the end was pretty good as well.

''Japan becoming literally westernized'' is something hard to relate to since you don't see it nor understand it from a nip point of view.
And nationalism and his feminist viewpoint is cracked up to 11.

The characters are okay but it doesn't feel right since they lack interaction.
It's weird because banter is one of the things Ryukishi excels at.
Leo, the main character, is borederline garystu so you either find him funny or hate him for being so over the top. But this is anime type surrealism so meh.

That chinese guy was pretty fun and cool.
And the final season is a complete suffering and shows that Ryukishi can still give no single shit about his characters dying in a meaningful way.

Higanbana was a mixed bag for me.

The first story in the first game is hilarious, but this could be due to me remembering the manga version. The one with the camera was pretty spooky, rabbit abuse one was okay, Sumire was good, and I can't remember the rest.

The second game is weird and the first chapter felt like it was foreshadowing something so I was expecting another chapter to build up on it. 40 day marathon was pretty surprising. Eyepatch girl had a mediocre chapter due to lack of character development, pedo teacher was fun, Sumire 2 started bad but the ending was good, and finally, Higanbana's backstory lacked the emotional punch that his other works have.

When Outbreak came out, it was found that it came with Daybreak.
One anon had the game and noted that Outbreak was written by Ryukishi and Takano.

And on its own, it explain a lot.
Like the outbreak coming out of nowhere.

Decided to finish RGD Season 1 after the mediocre first chapter. Second chapter was pretty fun with all the shootouts and car chases. The scene with the credits popping up was very well done, I think. Not sure why hardly anyone has played it.

Seems like even the artist kinda knew his art style wouldn't be liked much. The Kizuna sprite one just looks like she's old.
She doesn't look similar to Shion/Mion or has similar facial and hair features.
You can ever tell by how the hair looks similar by the separation line.
Except that Oryo has longer hair.

And the Kizuna sprites doesn't seem to have a presence. She's just an old lady. You'd never think she was in charge of a Yakuza clan.

It's not that it's bad, it's just boring.
I'm sure Ryukishi could have done a lot better if he had done the sprites. I'm sure he's the one who gave design details to the mangakas who drew the manga.

As to why the Kizuna sprite look different to the manga, I have no idea.

I don't know how they managed the characters faces who doesn't have a sprite. The manga and Kizuna aren't related anyway, I think the exclusive content that are in both (and the anime) all comes from Ryukishi, with him giving them an overall description of the character.

Is anyone worried that R07's new work is just going to be a rehash of the same stuff? I mean, there are 16 episodes total of WtC if you combine Higurashi and Umineko. Each episode explores different things and Higanbana also does the same with very similar elements.

I'm worried Dai is just going to rehash his old music and make another Dear You that basically sounds exactly the same.

Ryukishi plans everything from the start. Umineko has a lot more foreshadowing than Higurashi in almost every detail.

The part where Featherine and Lambda fight where Featherine explains that she just writes the end and works backwards is likely how Ryukishi does his work.

He creates the world, writes the characters and ending and works backwards to set up bullshit surounding it.
Higurashi is a great comparison because of the amount of different interpretation he wrote using the same story outline as a basis.
There's so many different variation and interpretation of what is going on while it gives the *true* story by the 8th arc that it truly shows that Ryukishi does write the end first and works backwards.

RGD really is bad to be honest. Ryukishi hasn't written anything really good since the first half of Umineko. I know people will argue about Higanbana - I say it's average at best and only looks good next to other VNs. But Higanbana aside, let me tell you this:

RGD is utter trash. I actually thought episode 1 was quite good, at least as good as Higanbana. It's Episode 2 where it all falls apart. Leo is a sue alright, not a borderline sue either. From the looks of it he was going to singlehandedly win a war. After Ryukishi took back, well, just about everyone's deaths and then Leo took out numerous enemies that surrounded him in an open area, I fucking dropped it like lightning. It's embarrassingly bad. If you are going to make your characters do stupid shit then you need to give them a super power or something and not just have them take out a entire squads solo.

There is also a lot of politics blah blah blah and not the interesting kind you see in LotGH

Having written Erika he must understand the concept of a sue, no idea how he fell straight down the trap with Leo.
