Personally, I think that's what makes it harder to read romaji.

I'm so used to reading English that I can't read long strings of romaji properly because my mind tries to read it as English words and I have to constantly stop myself and backtrack or I'll fuck up the pronunciation completely or not even recognize the word at all.

Yes, but Japanese drops the "you" where possible, so I don't think it'd count as second person, but rather fourth person instead.
