I really like WuG mostly because it was quite realistic and included commentary on the current idol industry. You can see that in the natural hair and eye colors, and they had the balls to show the mainstream idol industry as the hell it is. Also, amateur VAs. I love them.

Sadly it didn't get very popular probably because it was too realistic in a way, and had really shitty animation and pacing. They still didn't use 3D for dance scenes though (looking at you Love Live).

They'll sing at this year's Anisama, it's probably the last time we'll see them, sadly.

My problem with WuG is it had image problems. At first it was supposedly more realistic, but as it went on it just got more and more fantastical becoming the same as other idol series. I did like the designs and voices, but other than that it's not nearly as realistic as it's fans claim and it's not the only idol series with commentary.

Idolmaster itself is one seeing how it's changed over the years along with idols themselves. Originally it seemed more inspired by morning musume and they've even covered some of their songs, but things like the mobile games resemble more current idol groups like AKB. While imas is an idealized world for idols it doesn't try to claim otherwise. However there are still more issues and problems despite this setting while most drama in love live is just there for drama's sake. While LL may have had better writers and more fun, idolmaster has more interesting characters and situations due to it's age range. While LL is in high school most of idolmaster doesn't cover school as some of the idols are too old for that.

Also originally the imas girls looked more realistic, it's only with the port and onward they started becoming more anime colored. While I did like the views presented in WuG and it had some catchy songs and interesting costumes it really suffered from it's lack of budget and image issues. I quite enjoyed the movie, but most of the show itself was forgettable although it had some good episodes here and there.

I do think that iM@S (the games and the anime) try at least to include some issues from the real idol industry. I think it does the balance between fun and realism quite well. The Cinderella world seems to be more idealized though. Love Live on the other hand just avoids the idol industry altogether; it's more about some high school girls having fun while they're girls and most drama revolves about that.
