1. Yuri sells. It sells really well. It is making its way into more and more anime/games/novels/whatever you like. Why? Because it is easy, cheap, convenient and has a mostly untapped fanbase. It recycles characters and provides new fanservice oppurtunities.
2. Yuri defuses harem situations. Aren't we sick of the previous generation of guy ends up surrounded by girls, girls all end up punching him into the sky bullshit? Now the girls can hook up with each other if shunned, or team up in 2s or 3s.
3. Tsundere characters who appear in any medium as a rival to another female exude sexual tension. Tsun implies dere, which implies sexual attraction. Thus the ever popular and prevalent archetype of tsundere put in any harem/competition setting sets up yuri vibes.
4. Every dude wants a threesome. Or foursome. Or whateversome. But a dude only has one cock.
5. And most important, you can imply yuri and keep both the hetero-only-fans and yuri-fans happy.

Only reason Yaoi is so much more popular is because all the god damned innuendo everyone has. First off, the slightest pat on the shoulder nowadays could mean anything from "good job!" to "Hey, let's fuck!". Every anime since 1990 that has has at least 2 competent male characters have had a shoulder pat scene.

Finally, there's so many fucking fab...FABULOUS characters now. Let's take Ikuto and the blonde kid (forgot the name) from Shugo Chara. All in all, modern anime caters to everyone; yaoi fangirls, yuri fanboys, pedos, furries, there's something in every anime for every type of fan. Hell, Moetan had shit for the mecha fans, and that was a blatant loli fanservice show.

I can't fault the man for making everything himself his way and keeping it that way. The art is part of Touhou's charm these days. Playing SA for the first time and laughing at the new character was awesome when coupled with the HOLY SHIT, SHE'S THROWING MOTHER FUCKING SUNS AT ME. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

I'm guessing it's only going to get even more ridiculous from now on as ZUN runs out of ideas for new characters and start just throwing darts at a idea board to make each new Touhou.

I think I can honestly say that if it wasn't for the fact fighting her is awesome in SA I probably wouldn't like her.

Simple as that. Some fanart makes her look almost normal for a Touhou character and she's not really been given extra personality through doujin works yet... but even then, I look at her and it's plain to see her character design is the most retarded thing I've seen in Touhou yet.
