Medea was "made" to fall madly in love with Jason by the gods and killed her brother as a way to aid Jason. She was essentially brainwashed into becoming a yandere. Then Jason cheated on her and, well...

Not that this entirely excuses her actions, but a lot of this stuff she did was because of people fucking with her mind. It's kind of crazy.

Her entire life was ruined just so Jason could get the Golden Fleece from her family.

Just try to imagine that, being slipped a magic roofie that forces you to fall madly in love with a total stranger, killing your own family and leaving with them, marrying them, having kids with them, only for the sole object of your affection to cheat on you anyway, because they can, while you were stuck loving them this whole time because you were "made" to.

Killing her kids was excessive, unnecessary and cruel, but then, the circumstances leading up to that could have been avoided entirely. You have a brainwashed woman forced to love someone so much that they'd murder for them, and then have that love trampled on.

It's like purposefully turning a normal person into a yandere and getting surprised when they start murdering people around you when you mistreat or cheat on them.

Indeed, as Fate/* servants go, she's almost sympathetic. Lots of bad stuff happens to her and then she kinda flips, which puts her ahead of most legendary heroes for whom "murderous dickwad" is the *default* state. Ancient heroes are assholes.
