Touhou is a series of novels written by Zun Baru. Some of them aren't translated, but the real heart of 2hu is the musical production. The music is very well received, especially the arias.

There is nothing indicating she is forced to do anything. She resolves incidents out of her own volition. She may occasionally be roped into something, but that's mostly because of her sense of duty or her intuition telling her it's somehow the right thing to do.

Not in the way it's commonly depicted where people think she lives in poverty and has to eat dirt to survive. She has her own garden where she gets fruid and sake ingredients from as well as a nearby river from where she fishes Dragon Ball-tier fish.

but there's clearly something that happened before the first game that made her either hate or like youkai, because the very end of SoPM reveals that deep down she wants humans and youkai to live in peace and harmony. I'm guessing whoever did her miko training (her mom?) made her strongly believe that youkai are evil no matter what contrary to what she actually believed, but then again judging by PMiSS every youkai actually believes it's their role to be mischievous and enjoy (the strong ones anyway) fighting Reimu because she's so strong.

Nah, basically youkai only exist because humans wanted to believe in an "enemy", so if they stop being humanity's enemies they'll die. Gensokyo is some kind of grand experiment to move youkai away from this and make them self-sufficient, but it hasn't fully worked yet.

The former Hakurei is depicted as brutal, so Reimu probably had a rough chilhood. Like Youmu, I guess, being trained by a "parent" who may not be blood-related to her at all.

It doesn't help that she lives alone at the age of 16 (unlike Marisa who decided that by herself) and is burdened with most of Gensokyo's fate.

I see Reimu as the hero Gensokyo needs, but not the one it deserves.

Humans think of her as lazy, the youkai just want to fight her, Yukari is literally the worst boss you could ever have, she's basically the only police officer in a world of criminals, and I imagine that she sometimes feels lonely, right up until someone arrives, and then she wants to be alone again.

She didn't choose the miko life, the miko life chose her.

She finds enjoyment when she can, mostly by enjoying the occasional fight, fishing, stuff like that.

I do like to imagine her as a semi-regular smoker though, just to take the edge off things.
