Most stories are based on a gimmick (like the protag being secretly a youkai, him being Mayohiga's landlord, or the story taking place in the future, or the protag being possessed by a tentacle youkai, protag being a shapeshifter named Wade...), instead of being based on a plot. So since the writer doesn't plan ahead, he mostly makes up shit as he moves on. Do The Right Thing being an exception, I'm ready to bet the writer has no real plot, and yet last time I checked, it worked fine.
