I decided to learn Game Maker earlier this week in order to make Touhou Moon, and now I've finally started working on it. After finding some free art online, I quickly built a very early version. It's still to early too show anything cool, but I wanted to show people that Touhou Moon is alive!

The art I found is bare bones, but enough to start with. It has great tilesets, but has only a character base to work with. Which is why I'm walking around with a nude model. We need artists to turn these characters into cute 2hus. There are also other things we need like a couple animations, character portraits, and more tilesets. Designers for UI and level editing are also appreciated.

So,

I've been mainly working on the transition to 3D because I noticed that everything in the fakeshot doesn't actually properly aligned. Also working on the fake dimension would make it harder to properly deal with depth, shadows and more.
Still, I don't want it to lose the charm of the original image so I rethink about the whole thing. I didn't pay previously that much attention to the different scales so I thought about uniforming the textures on the 3D objects to actually match the sprites of characters.

What do you think? In the left there's a comparison between the old tile and the new (which seems more detailed) and their respective size compared to a character.

It doesn't work that well. For example the tiles are around something like 76*76. That in itself is already a problem since it's not a "good" ratio (you'd want 64*64 for the closest one, or 128*128). I also noticed that the tiles have inconsistent offsets here and there.

Actually, it could work but in that case I'd have to make a grid-based movement (which mean no more shooting bullets for example) because of a depth issue I mentioned in the previous thread, putting any kind of shadows or dynamic lighting would be difficult too.

In my personal opinion I highly advise no exaggerated huge pixels. It's okay to use them as dev art, but personally I am tired of seeing bloated pixel games that try way too hard to pretend to be something they're not.

I've been working a lot on invisible things like logic, editors, uvs... Anyway I've reached a stage where I can start to think seriously about the gameplay and minigames, so if you have suggestions drop them, I'll read everything later.
Also, maybe I'll give the ability to zoom-in/out, with that zoom being the farthest possible since it matches the original fakeshot somehow. What do you think?

Well, everything looks blocky and a bit messy because I'm not focusing at all on the graphics. It's just too time consuming for now, I'll do that part the last.
Though I plan to have better water tiles, possibly animated. I'm not going for a "minecraft" open-world, more like a set of mini worlds (like in any tactical, a bit like disgaea), which allows me to add more fancy effects that would normally be too costly in terms of memory/GPU for a tiled-game.

I'm only using sprites from the fakeshot. For the rest I'm somehow just doing them on my own, trying to make them match with the colors and sizes.

Mixing the two isn't usually a problem, but since the sprites are from a fake iso image, it's like trying to simulate a 2.5D within real dimension while using simulated sprites from another 2.5D. The depth is just messed up beyond beliefs.

To be honest I'm starting to think that everything should be 3D even with only a tiny amount of depth, would make my life way easier.
OR
I could try the old way of cutting all the sprites in different parts but that would kill the point of using a 3D engine in the first place. Shadows and lights in real time would be impossible to calculate.

What do you mean? For the world or the sprites?

Right now when it comes to the world (blocks) I don't have any depth issues since the positions are making sense.

For the sprites it's another story. Usually it "should" work with 3D when using the common way of using planes oriented at the same direction, but since I'm "faking" their display like I mentioned earlier it's a bit tricky.
For example I can't just make them have the same rotation as anything in the world ( isometric is around 45° / 30° ), they need a fix in their rotation to properly face the camera like they do in the original picture ( which means an inverse -45° / -30° ). The problem here is that the sprites are actually oriented in the fakeshot, you can see that their feett are not aligned but already aligned with the world. For example it means that without the reverse orientation, they'd just look like half a plane like you could see in the gif when I rotated the camera around. It's a bit hard to explain.

Anyway as long as the collision system is working fine like you can see with the tree, there shouldn't be any issues. This is why I was thinking at some point that the fastest way would be to just create a 3D model for them based on the original colors, but modeling is just not something for me.

Watched it carefully again. As I mentioned in the earlier thread I'm mainly trying to set up things so they are shadow/light reactive.

When it comes to 3D and Isometric each method has their pros and cons. For example you can see in the video the shadows are baked at not dynamic, which means that if you look very (very) carefully sometimes you'll just see sprites clipping through some other sprites or even the shadows. Actually I don't ever recall seeing in the Disagea series a map when you have, like, a block over your head casting shadows on you, but that's part of the game design.

With 3D, or at least just the world, I'm at least able to cast shadows and lights dynamically. Anon suggested a cloud shadow for example, and that'd be easy to do without faking around anything.

On a side note,

Since we talked a bit about it, I just created a copy variation of my current engine to use only sprites and a real isometric approach.
Like you can see, there's that clipping issue (because Marisa and her big hat) and in the last part the shadow where, since it's baked and not dynamic, it's possible to have it being above empty space (though that wouldn't happen since the design would prevent you to go that way).

I do admit that the tiles are cuter and it's also faster to work that way, and also all those issues could probably be avoided with good design and half blocks : which means instead of having an empty space right next one walkable, you have another solid block but with fancy graphics (like some broken wall or something).

You can't really see it in that webm since my computer is shit but it looks better, I'll post a pic next.

Not quite. I've been wasting too much time on arts so now I'm focusing on the overall games and mini-games.
Right now I wanted to make some basic tower defense for a while so I'm making one with Alice and her dolls. Still deciding whether I should add some maps where you're free to move around and shoot enemies, like stronger enemies that'd need more than the doll's power, at the same time.

Ideally I'd love to have a minigame theme based on each character I had from the fakeshot. Marisa, Tenshi, Suwako and Nitori, but can't think of anything (or at least some fishing or water-based game for Suwako)

I'm sure someone has probably asked this, but with how everything looks so far, would it be possible for something like a Touhou FFTAdvance? Japanese people love foreigners. If you have no Japanese they love you, if you have a bit of Japanese they love you. But when you start to get fluent they stop praising you and view you with a little suspicion.
As long as you're not far out of Tokyo, hiragana is all you need. A bit farther into the countryside and you start to need the odd kanji.
I suggest you go. Japan is still a lot of a fun for a foreigner that gets involved with the locals and avoids the usual gaijin haunts.

I've lived as a foreigner in Japan for two years and so my comments are based on my limited experience. As long as you aren't a jerk, the Japanese like you fine. If you're lucky to be white, they will forgive you a lot of things.
There's a lot of talk about Japanese being xenophobic, but it's really just towards black people and Russians in Hokkaidou (since there's been a number of infamous criminal scandals involving them) - the source of those "white people not allowed" signs you occasionally see posted.
I'm an Aussie, so I manage to visit the country twice a year or so (it's only 9 hours away) so it lacks a lot of the "exotic, far-away fantasy-land" mystique it probably holds for a lot of Americans. Also, my wife is Japanese, so living with one in your house makes them seem a lot less like "magical girls from one of my Japanese animes" and a lot like normal human beings who happen to speak a different language.
