Well, if they did it one time, the difference would be rather small by the modern day. Japan did more to hurt Korea by controlling its economy for 30+ years than America did to Japan in 43-45. In order to make an irrecoverable loss, you must systematically dismantle the economy and reform it to extract wealth to a select few or a host country. See: China before Deng Xiaoping, the Middle East with its oil barons, and all of Africa.

The katana was basically Japan's rapier or dueling pistol.

Contrary to popular portrayal, samurai actually used bows and arrows, often mounted on horses like the Mongols, and when they fought in melee combat on a battlefield, they usually fought in formation with spear like one would have pikemen.

During the warring states period there were literally hundreds of thousands of guns in use in Japan, more than in any other country in the world at the time, and one of the most famous Japanese warlords was known for their tactics with firearms.

After unification, guns were banned in order to consolidate power, and Samurai were essentially given a status of knighthood and given a code of chivalry to keep them in check. That's where samurai with katanas comes in.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

You should always practice safe cutting techniques with Japanese knives. They can be dangerous.
