Tohno is the platypus of the nasuverse. He looks like a joke until you underestimate him and he's got a chance to make you regret it.
Also it's kindof a lame excuse for plot armor, because if he's not going up against anyone who's Gilgamesh-level full of themselves, there's no real reason he shouldn't be torn to shreds.

Yeah, that's how he gets through every fight he's in. One way or another he gets marked as a total non-threat because he looks like a random bystander. Then when he's been underestimated, they let their guard down and he kills them.

He doesn't have the speed or strength to fight a real fight with the type of characters that typically inhabit the nasuverse. The only way he'd be able to stand a chance is if he snaps and goes Nanaya, which is why he couldn't win against actual Nanaya who's like that by default.

His intrinsic combat style is styled towards using a blade. His dad didn't embed psychic assassin GUN techniques in him. Only psychic assassin knife techniques.

I think the main reason is that the MEoDP has actually short range.

Tohno must get close to the target to be able to visualize the dots, especially strong targets, at that point might as well use a knife since it's small and concealable.

Then again, he pulled a shotgun and casually used it in KT so he's not clueless with gun either.
