I don't know anything about this board. I'm moving into an apartment for the first time and can't be bothered bringing a bed up. I saw that the Japanese use futons on the floor to sleep on.

Does anyone here do that? Is it worth it? Any benefits?

It's a fucking mattress you throw on the floor, what the fuck do you want to hear?

Don't buy a Japanese futon you weeaboo, just buy a regular mattress if you wanna sleep on the floor.

I did the same thing for a while.

Make sure your apartment has no insects.

I use several thick blankets because I have a ceramic floor and it gets kind of cold in winter.

It is good for your back if you hunch up in front of the monitor all day

get a box and a matress and put it on the floor, if for some reason you insist on getting a futon then just remember to put it away everyday or else your futon and floor might get moldy and gross

Get something cheap and washable?
I really don't know, but I bet they sell little "bonsai" plants for the students somewhere near campus. See what your folks/loans (and roommates) are up for paying for (and living with).
