StB and DS are the best gameplay-wise, but i wouldn't recommend it to a casual player because you need a lot of dedication to beat all spellcards
maybe ISC is a nice alternative if you use the items, but you should probably start with a main game because ISC has probably too much gimmicks involved and delude the player
