As long as you bring something to deal with that fucking sub(Yuubari with sonar/depth charge/2xyellow is ideal) if you're sortieing ships that can attack subs and 2 DDs anything will fly.
You can try bringing 2BB 2CA 2DDs for a chance to sink it at day, but it's really expensive.
Alternatively, you can clear it with subs.

I recently cleared 5-3 with 1 CL, 1 CLT, and 4 DDs. All have double attack setups. I don't have any flares, searchlights, or anything of the sort. Yuubari had a depth charge and sonar. One of my DDs had a sonar in case yuubari couldn't kill the sub on the boss node (rarely happened). Rest had turbines for the third slot.

Getting the first four boss kills was relatively easy and quick. Didn't take more than 10 sorties. The final boss kill took at least 15-25 sorties (can't remember exactly). I made it to the boss node pretty often (3-6 sorties) and got past the day battle with around 3 ships that were able to participate during the night battle on average.

I used echelon for pre-boss nodes and line abreast for the boss node.

Use a fast fleet. Less dead ends, less retreats because of a crit-eating CVL. You lose firepower, but it's doesn't affect much. Drop preboss support, most of the retreats are caused by Re's pre-emptive torpedo, and you can get her to orange on your own. The rest depends on your equipment, mainly planes, but 5-5 isn't a map you should do if you have a hard time getting AS.

Pre-emptive aerial phase isn't affected by fatigue, right? The damage amount and the plane shot down amount are same regardless whether it's sparkled or red down to 0?

This. My poi does an average of 110-120 during night battles, and in day battles around 20-30 (which is still amazing for a DD) with 2 10cm HA and a sonar (yes I use sonars for accuracy and for sub nodes. I'm a kuso ttk that believes in placebo shit.
