ITT we speculate what is the Moon military martial art is like, I think it's either karate or boxing

for Reisen case (rabbit with strong thighs), kickboxing seems suitable

Lunarian weapons are pretty damn magical and stuff, so they're very strong.

They can fire multiple shots, cause great explosions, and all that stuff.

Regular firearms would function perfectly in the vacuum of space, but there would be a few issues that might arise in the long run.

1. Lubricants could become very viscous if left in the shade for extended periods of time. Extreme cold could slow down the cycling action speed, and cause malfunctions.

2. Lubricants could evaporate quickly in vacuums and leave the gun dry. This isn't a very big problem, though, as most firearms can cycle well without lubricants, albeit with more wear and tear as tens of thousands of rounds are fired. Degreasing a gun completely is actually how you'd get it to function in extreme cold, even on Earth.

3. Since there's no air, the firearm would get warm and stay warm for a long time. Things in space lose heat by radiation only, and that isn't the quickest way. However, it is hard to get a gun to malfunction from being shot until it's too hot and starts to fail; if you had an AR-15 or M4 and ten (10) magazines of thirty rounds, and fired them all in full-auto, even in space, it would not become too hot to break. The gas tube might get a little red, but it would be okay. Six to nine hundred rounds without pause would melt things, however.

Belt-fed firearms would either require three or four barrels to allow the first one to cool enough to be changed back versus the regular two, or need some form of cooling. Having a bunch of water tanks in space wouldn't be the best way to do this, so multiple barrels to quick-change would probably be the best way to go.

>> No.12182000

>>12181473
That's really limiting, so you can't fire an LMG in space without it melting off after 50 rounds?

>> No.12182028

>>12182000
A good 2 man team would have no trouble keeping a belt fed happy well into multiple thousands of rounds with a few spare barrels. This wouldn't change in space, they'd just be switching a bit more often, probably at the 300 round mark or so. Depends of the caliber, and how fast they have to shoot.

The shooter's job is fairly simple. Watch beaten zones, suppress, stay clear of friendlies. Sure, it gets a little hectic, but the support guy is key to the shooter doing his job.

The support guy has to keep his eyes and ears open for commands or forces trying to flank his position, he has to link a finishing belt so that there's no stop between the belt that's running out of ammo and the belt that's fresh (he has to link them while the gun is firing), and he has to do that while keeping the belt feeding properly.

Last and most importantly, he has to keep an eye on the barrel, and when it gets too hot, he has to coordinate with the shooter to swap it for a cool barrel.

A good MG team can keep a whole mountain of enemy combatants suppressed or dead for hours on end with enough ammo and two/three barrels. In space, they'd just need a few more barrels, as they'd take longer to cool.

>> No.12182039

>>12182028
Dude, from a thousand round change to a 300 round limit, they are gonna need a lot more barrels, and that's an MG team, I'm more talking of LMG dude in a fireteam who has to take care of the LMG by himself.

>> No.12182052

>>12182039
Some modern rifles and their LMG variants are designed with quick barrel swaps in mind. Granted, this is more to allow for swapping between long and short barrels depending on what the situation requires, but it could be applied to normal barrels too.

>> No.12182060

>>12182052
Still carrying a lot of barrels isn't really ideal, lotsa extra weight for an already weighty gun with lot of bullet, it's better to install some sort of cooling system to keep the barrel from melting every hundred rounds.

>> No.12182063

>>12182060
Somehow I doubt weight matters much in Zero G.

>> No.12182066

>>12182039
Again, depends of how fast they need to fire, but you're right, on an LMG with no support, it would get pretty interesting. MG teams change barrels more on how many rounds they put down per minute compared to how many total rounds they've expended. Even on Earth, in full retard shooting, they end up swapping fairly quickly. Sometimes they don't need to change for a long time if they're firing in short bursts with a bit of time between each burst; it doesn't take much to keep heads down.

At that point, it would make sense to spend the extra money for cobalt alloy barrels. Also, since you're in space or on the moon, weight isn't that big of an issue, so you could either have a heatsink on your barrel, or even a second LMG entirely. You are in space, after all.

>>12182052
Of course. Many LMGs and MGs can be swapped in a very short times, in the order of three to five second to switch barrels, and some take longer. Some require heat resistant mitts, others have handles. Again, it depends.

>>12182060
Correct, a cooling jacket might come back into vogue with space fights. They probably wouldn't use water, though. It would need to stay liquid in vacuum, unlike water that boils off at room temperature in space.

>> No.12182071

>>12182063
Still going to cumbersome though, weights just don't disappear altogether in Zero G.

>> No.12182076

>>12182071
That's what your support dude is for.

Maybe single man LMG wouldn't be feasible in space. It might be realistic just to have two dudes on one LMG or GPMG. One has the MG and ammo, the other has barrels and a carbine. They'd both have about as much weight as the other, and would practice their respective tasks.

>> No.12182090

>>12182076
Now that would be a change in modern fireteam doctrine, since LMG dude role is just as crucial as riflemen and DM, and while similar, MG team does not have the movement nor initiative as the LMG dude.

But oh well, let's see what the future have in store for us.

>> No.12182099

>>12182090
I think space in itself would change fireteam doctrine.

I mean it's space

Even astronauts that are in space right now probably wouldn't know how to direct fireteams in actual space combat. It would probably like being in a firefight underwater, except with less hearing, nigh-infinite weapon range, and unintuitive physics of movement and mass. All that alone would require intensive training in a completely different way than regular combat training.
