12147204 No.12147204 [Reply] [Original]

Old thread: >>12076212

Please discuss the Touhou games and STGs at large here.

Thank you to everyone who participated in last thread's challenge, and congratulations to our winner
>>12088817
Also, my apologies to the wonderful easymode players who are not being recognized here.

Thread challenge: ISC (of course)
Creativity challenge: Draw something cute with Sekibanki's head in 2-2
Scoring challenge: get as many points as you can in scene 8-4

Links:
Replay uploader for 6-13: http://replays.gensokyo.org/
Replay uploader for 14: http://threplays.appspot.com/replays

Sorry there's no 14.3 support on the uploader yet, royalflare supports ISC if you want to use that in the meantime.

I have about 5 hours on the game now and submitted some scores to RF. the scoring is quite awful on the whole, but some scenes are functional.

8-4 seems pretty boring, it will just end up in trying to bet the smallhu as fast as possible to get the bonus - there isn't much you can do differently and it don't seem that there are many bonuses like in the former tengu games for pretty pictures and something

The "Scoring community" calls it so, but they also dislike vpatch. I personally think using the hitbox patch is wrong as it wasn't how EoSD was designed, whereas vpatch helps remove input lag that wasn't as common on computers when EoSD came out.

8-4.

Yeah, my favorite past-time activity: sitting on top of a boss that fires random bursts and moves into whichever direction it wants to, messing up cancels and grazing.

This game is a weird combination of EoSD and SA. Maybe if using items dropped the spell bonus while grazing would tick it upwards, but that didn't happen.

Personally I don't care whether you use it or not but most people dislike hitbox usage, and some scoreboards don't want those kind of replays. Use it until you get used enough to the game that you stop staring at your hitbox.

Momiji only has the bite card right? When the teeth spawn stand where I'm on, on the picture. When you hear the lasers spawn move downward as much as you can without hitting the little blue bullets.
Some of the teeth spawn out of bounds so there's a higher chance you'll live. The electricity she shoots after is random but one of the beams is aimed, that's why you move down.
This is still stupid random, some teeth can still kill you and expect to die several times to electricity walls. But I find this to have a much higher success rate than any other method.

>make a quick movement to the side, to create a gap in streams
>quickly move up at her side as close as you can, you should get some spaced out bullets that are easy to dodge twice
>quickly move down to get through the gap that should be getting back down
That's how I managed to do it.
The key is to avoid diagonals and move quickly when you don't twitchdodge (the corner bounce will squish you).
There's also the option to pass up until sub items are available, use Sub Jizo and just slowly move from the side, should juust do it. Seriously, Sub Jizo breaks so many cards it's not funny.

First attempt at scoring, not really sure what I'm doing. Taking that into account, how good/bad is this score ?
Also, from what I understand, spell card score decreases over time, but grazing increases it. Is there a good way to know if milking a card will be worth more than speedkilling it, or do you just need to experiment ?

Yes. Try it out in spell practice and see if overall you're gaining or losing spell bonus. As you become more skilled and learn more difficult grazing techniques, you'll find more and more spells that you can milk.

>Also, is it ever really a good idea to use bombs ?
It can be, depending on your route. Finding out requires a lot of experimentation and analysis. PCB's complexity and flexibility makes scoring in it really great.

However, unless you're short on cherry and need a border for a critical graze, I would recommend saving bombing for cherry until later. There are a lot of other tricks that are more obvious and beneficial to you now.

Also, from what I understand, each time you capture a spell card, the pink cherry items are worth 100 more cherry, right ? Is that the only reason people say capturing the early cards is essential, or is there something else that would make the earlier ones more important ?

>care to share some ? Or is it just the kind of stuff you'd find on the wiki ?
I'd have to see a replay to see which things you are and aren't doing. For example, you could have bad stage routes that result in dropping items all the time, or you could be missing an easy but important border supergraze, etc. You seem to be for figuring things out on your own, which is great, but if you wanted, you'd be bombarded with hundreds of things you probably couldn't have imagined if you watch a world record run of the difficulty and shot type you're interested in.

>Is that the only reason people say capturing the early cards is essential
Probably. But everything you do early in the game is important, since any Cherry+ gains will affect the value of all point items from that point forward.

>> No.12162272

>>12162255
Well, right now, showing a replay would probably be pointless, since there are millions of things that I know I did wrong, and accidental deaths and stuff. For now I'd imagine working out a proper route would be the most important thing to do, as well as working out which cards I should try supergrazing and which ones I should just kill.
Oh, and one last thing, does it affect your score at all if you shoot in focused mode when you already have a border ? I'm not good enough to pacify every spell card when I do have a border, so I was wondering if I should worry about shooting focused or not (besides when there's tons of graze to be had, which I know is much better to do unfocused.).

>> No.12162304

>Oh, and one last thing, does it affect your score at all if you shoot in focused mode when you already have a border ?
You do not gain Cherry while a border is active, so it doesn't matter how you shoot. The main detriment to shooting during a border is that you could be using the damage you're doing to the boss for more cherry and getting your next border sooner if you wait it out.

A bit of a tech support style question, but does anyone have an issue where, when you press 3 arrow keys at once, the computer beeps and the input gets all fucked? I started having this issue when I installed windows 7 for my computer. I'd be playing my 2hu all fine and dandy, then I accidentally hit 3 arrow keys in the heat of the moment and silly marismiser flies off in a random direction for a split second, and obviously I can't be having that. Of course it happens no matter what I'm doing on my computer but it really fucks me over when I play touhou and I'm having a good run.

Maybe I should ask at a tech support forum, but the one I did ask just gave me a generic reply of "are your keyboard drivers up to date? maybe try a different keyboard" and the program he recommended for auto-updating my drivers gave me an error. With enough experience with dense patterns, you can feel the squareness (it's even more obvious in EoSD with the Metal Fatigue bullets). I can even tell when some hitboxes are off-center (UFO's larger bullets had this problem for some reason, their hitboxes feel a little to the left).

>And what does circular"ish" mean?
I'm not sure. I only said that since I've heard a lot of rumors that ZUN fucked up the circular hitbox collision detection equation a little bit. It's nothing that I've noticed in-game, however.

I'm sure someone out there has pulled out the code that ZUN used.

By the way, a lot of people think it's just the white part of a bullet that's the hitbox, or even some people that think it's a little bigger than that, but no. The bullet hitboxes are way, way smaller than most people think.

My wife is really good at maneuvering through really tight spaces that I didn't even think where possible to get through.

>> No.12172512

I'm kind of new to these threads, and really casual when it comes to 2hu. I wanted to ask something though. I'm currently on PCB and have been trying for months to get a 1cc on normal with no noticeable improvements in getting there (like I said, terrible). I wanted to know if beating the games with continues is still considered okay. I know you receive the bad endings and poor score, but I can't seem to do much better, and I was able to beat the game immediately after trying with continues. I was simply wondering if completing with continues can still be seen as acceptable and having beat the game, despite the seemingly negative connotations.

>> No.12172540

Its not seen as beating the game by most people. Technically, it is though. I'd advise you to just keep playing, move up to a harder difficulty or maybe try another Touhou game for a fresh perspective. Its hard to believe, but you will get there in the end. It took me around 7 months to 1cc EoSD on Normal.

>> No.12172587

>>12172512
Anyone at all can beat the game on normal with continues, so no, it's not really anything special, especially with PCB. If you died right at the end of the final boss or something then if it makes you happy you can pretend you beat it, but even then, that is when most 1ccs end.
You'll manage eventually if you keep trying, though. If you've never seen anyone decent playing before, there's a high chance you're doing stuff wrong, so go watch some replays and learn from them.

I meant that you need to stop complaining and keep playing the game. Of course other people are better than you at sight-reading, when they have played more than you.

I agree with >>12172540 you definitely want to play a variety of touhou games rather than focus on just one when starting out. You get better at bullet dodging overall while having much more variety than if you were just playing a single game all the time.
I think only the intense high-scoring people focus on one or two games, I know I couldn't do that. I like being able to do a run in UFO then the next day I give EoSD a whirl, change things up a bit, maybe do a no-bomb run of MoF's extra stage.

>> No.12173383

Every time I reach an EX boss's last spellcard for the first time is really intense and heart-pounding. I always get 70-80% through and I think it's because the sheer adrenaline is making me like 300% better at 2hu. I love these moments.

So, I'm kinda confused with some things going on in Subterranean Animism.

Did Utsuho really lose her powers at the end of the game? There is real no conversation after you defeat Utsuho or any reference of her after that.

How the hell were the Moriya's going to tame Utsuho? She already planned to take over Gensokyo... or at least melt it...

Also, "The Kappas' Energy Revolution". What does the Kappas have to do with all this? Nitori was quite uniformed when you reach Utsuho with MarisaC.

This doesn't really concern this thread, as this isn't gameplay discussion, but whatever.

>Did Utsuho really lose her powers at the end of the game?
Considering she uses them in Hiso, I doubt it.

>How the hell were the Moriya's going to tame Utsuho?
With money and/or raw power? I don't think it was stated anywhere, but maybe you could read one of ZUN's books.

>What does the Kappas have to do with all this?
Probably nothing, outside aiding Marisa.

Depends on your taste. I guess some of the more popular arcade stuff would be anything Cave (eg. DDP, Deathsmiles, Mushi, etc), Raizing (Garegga/Bakraid, Mahou series, Batrider), Psikyo (Gunbird, Strikers, Dragon Blaze, etc), the Raiden series, the Ray series (RayForce, RayStorm, RayCrisis), the Gigawing series (and Mars Matrix!), some Toaplan stuff (Batsugun, Tatsujin, Hishouzame, etc), the R-Type series, the Gradius games (and sister-games like Parodius/Salamander/Otomedius, etc), the Darius series, Ikaruga, and Radiant Silvergun. Alfa System's Shikigami no Shiro series is pretty cool too, and relatively overlooked.

Then there's some doujin games like Crimzon Clover, StellaVanity, Hellsinker, any of the x.x games (Blue Wish/Eden's series), eXceed series, Leiria Stargazer, ∀kashicverse, Cho Ren Sha, Flame Zapper Kotsujin, the Siter Skain games (RefleX, KAMUI, ALLTYNEX Second), Genetos, XOP, Ring^-27, Trouble Witches, the Twins series (TWilight INSanity, TWilight refrAIN, Alternative Sphere), Satazius, Aero Chimera, Chronoblast, and a bunch of Touhou fanshmups. There's really a lot...

I'd say the "canon" would be most of Cave's catalogue, Garegga, Batrider, Strikers 2 and 3, Gunbird 2, R-Type, Gradius 5, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Darius Gaiden, Raiden Fighters Jet, Batsugun... *Coughs* Galaga, Space Invaders. Crimzon Clover maybe!?

There's a few new enemy types and a few changes to the spawns. The section after stage 3 mid and the latter half of 5.2 are really different. Few invincibility frames on breaks, breaks are shorter, type z gain is nerfed. Multiplier is up to x12.8 rather than x6.4.

It's worth the 10 bucks for Boost mode alone.

A rather modest improvement, but I am still happy about it. PB is PB after all. What I noticed is that I always PB because of some random reason where I do well in one area, but badly in everything else. My PB had good stages, but bad bosses. This new PB had bad stages, but good bosses. The PB before that was just a ridiculously good stage 6 and so on. It's never because I improved a little in everything :< Consistency is hard

So a cool thing just happened to me, it appears as though Impossible Spellcard has basically reset for me, I no longer have all the spellcards complete, I'm back at square one with the stage 1 tutorial and shit, no items except the starting ones, no secondaries. Has this happened to anyone else?
It appears as though I still have my save data or whatever, maybe it's just not recognizing it, I dunno. Anyone know if there's a way to fix this? I'm willing to play the whole game over again, but I'd much rather just restore my game to normal.

>> No.12184600

Been trying to No-Item all of 14.3, but....That's not going so well.
So far, No-itemed 65 out of the 75 spell cards.
The ones I can't even get the boss down to half health are:
5-2, 5-3, 6-5, 9-1, 10-3, 10-5, and 10-7.
The other three I've just been getting really unlucky with. Any tips with those scenes listed?
Also, does having the Yin-Yang orb only visibly reduce hitbox, or both visibly and physically reduce hitbox? Didn't really notice much of a difference either way in terms of physical hitbox.

For me its the opposite, I'm a self-sabotager. When I'm anxious I start thinking "what if I don't win? How am I controlling my arms?" and then I fly directly into an easily avoidable bullet. I have to play a stage lots of times until I'm bored so I don't get anxious anymore.

My first stage 2 that exceeded 20.000 timeorbs. I think it's pretty good, but I missed one of the fairies in the beginning of the stage, so that wasn't as good. I would like to hope I can reach this much more or less consistently in the end, but that should be very difficult. I gotta keep on practicing, I guess.
