Maribel and Renko's world is quite clearly not our own. Even though they're sometimes said to be from the near-future, it's not OUR near future. For one thing, Kyoto is the capital of Japan, Tokyo is an agricultural backwater, and the earth has sustained considerable ecological damage (mass extinctions etc.). I think ZUN intends it to be an alternate world where the Axis won World War 2.

Where is all this canon coming from?
I'm too busy actually playing the games and reading thousands of secondary doujins/looking at millions of pictures to read all the canon.

I've read most of Zun's canon manga and article-ish compilations.
To be honest, I like Renko and Maribel quite a bit and I have no idea where they came from.

The Music CDs each come with a Story. With the Exception of Dolls in Pseudo Paradise, that story has been about Maribel and Renko.

That would definitely explain why people do silly things like put a shrine in Earth orbit. Part of the conceit of Gensokyo is that it exists in our world, though, and certainly ZUN's referenced real-world material like air ionizers.

If it turns out that Maribel and Renko's world is actually just another dream, it would be pretty interesting and account for how weird it is.

Now what happened to Renko, why Renko is no longer with Yukari, who if anyone in Gensokyo Renko is related to, all that is still unknown.
So now all the mystery about the pair revolves around Renko, not Maribel.
Increasingly though, Renko's design has been evolving more and more to looking like Reimu's but if that means anything to the story or is just ZUN being lazy is still a guess at the moment.

I don't remember this happening, unless you're extrapolating from the fact she could astral project with Renko.

On a side note, what's the best music CD? I just picked up Ghostly Field Club at a con and it's pretty novel to have Touhou in a tangible form. What's the most listenable-as-music CD?
