All the Japanese alcohol I've tried were shit and not worth importing when you can get a decent American whiskey for dirt cheap here.

They're selling Hibiki whisky at the Costco near me for $50, which is almost $10 less than the usual retail price. Not bad.

I have always found japanese whisky to taste very light, but not weak. Its more similar to light highland, or a speyside, then it is to an American bourbon, or an islay or islands. I like a more peaty drink, so I am not as fond of them.

I used to obsessively clean everything in here before I set my focus on learning Japanese. Now it's a mess, I switched completely to eating meal replacement shakes to give me more study time, I'm overdue for a shower, and I've grown a beard that has grown out to nearly five inches. Alcohol doesn't work as a drug for everybody, and the people it does work for, it just turns them into stupid jerks until it wears off. There's no real enjoyment or any other human perception of anything involved, just self-reinforcing behavior.

Alcohol used as a party substance just amplifies whatever's already there, be it joking around or enjoying waving one's arms and legs around and calling it dancing, or whatever thing. There's usually some overlap between the "party" and "drug" side of things, but not so much that the stupid party kids all wind up having to attend alcoholics' meetings or whatever.

So short answer is: it depends a lot on what you're doing on/with it.

Odd, I have that exact same whisky. When I did study abroad the president of the company I was at recommended that as something that was good but not insanely expensive. I don't drink often, so I can't really compare it to much, but according to my friends it's very smooth.
