What's your favorite japanese band of all time?

Mine is art-school. Listened through their whole discography during the past 2 years, they're so consistent. They've become more polished over the years but it's still indie rock and doesn't sound mainstream.

i like their first eps and albums, because the out of tune, emo singing/screams were really fitting for the raw, unpolished production. felt genuine. i don't like the newer stuff after inspiration is dead (2007), too often it sounds like their voices and songwriting, and general style don't support the arena-rock direction they've taken. it sounds TOO BIG now. that said their op single for the psycho-pass anime still worked well for me. #4 is my favorite 凛として時雨 album i think.

First heard Onmyouza in 2000 and haven't been able to stop listening to them since.

I'll instead mention Casiopea, a jazz/funk fusion band. Issei Noro has been a huge musical influence on me since I was young and learning guitar and overall I love their work.
