Using the cookie method, they'd know you're from a foreign IP.
Using the VPN method, they'd know you're using a public VPN since you'd be sharing the same IP with other people.

Although both are against the ToS, DMM specifically mentioned that the bans are for botters, hackers and cheaters.

Using public VPN is more risky though, since it could be affiliated to account sharing or account selling since your IP will be jumping from one area into another so quickly, which could be flagged if you switched VPNs multiple times a day. DMM says that their staff are checking the offenses personally when banning accounts, but I highly doubt that. They are probably using an automated flagging system since it's much cheaper than hiring a staff to deal with it.

I've talked to the creators of KCV and KT respectively, and I've also looked in depth in how Logbook works.

I don't want to make it too technical, but the overlaying cause for difference between KancolleTool and KCV/Logbook is the usage of how API calls are made.

KCV and Logbook intercepts API calls. What that means is when the game server sends some data to the game, these programs read the data that is being sent and upload it to their client. That's why sometimes you have to go to main menu of the game for things to update, because that'll call the data from the game to the client.

KancolleTool works differently. It creates API calls. What this means is that instead of waiting for the game server to send the data, it makes them itself, forcing the server to send some packets so that it can update its info. This allows for real-time updates instead of having to wait for the servers to send the data.

I'm willing to assume many people who got banned used programs in a way that created API calls instead of using them that intercepted them. From my understanding, previous versions of KCV also used to create API calls until last few updates. Logbook never created API calls except during the alpha patch right after the Spring event start.

This is my conclusion on the current ban scare.

1.- If you are not in Japan you are already violating the ToS, therefore no method is safe. They only ignore it for the time being.

2.- You want to play it safe? Buy a private VPN in Japan. Your IP won't be shared (supposedly) and it will look like you are one Nip more for their system. Also use no viewers, play in the browser.

3.- Latest bans are only for scripters/botters/wiki retards that used the commie tool. Technical reasons are in the thread but basically its because of the way the API calls are created.

Chitose (That's Chitose, Chiyoda is the brunette) only caused one or two retreats. Kaga and Taihou caused much more, especially Taihou.
Total retreat count due to damage is 11:

Fuck 5-5, I decided to try it this week since I had plenty of resources leftover after the event, but this bullshit isn't remotely worth it.

I actually made it past preboss twice with little damage the first day, but both times compass sent me to deadend. Yesterday I kept getting eating loads of chip damage the first two nodes then get trashed by Re, or my CVL would get hit to red, never even made it past preboss. So today I decided to start running a regular support fleet as well as boss support, it helped a little (killed the Ta at second node once) but didn't matter as I get shit like Yamato being hit to red by Re torpedo.

I finally made it to boss node for the first time when I went back to line aboob at preboss like I did the first day (although Yamato gets hit to orange by final torpedo since I can't do damage). Get fucking green T at boss, support fleet only kills one DD, Mutsu whiffs at a DD, Wo-Kai hits Nagato to red, miserable failure as Yamato hits Wo for single digits in night battle and Mutsu targets Re.

I've already spent almost as many resources as it cost to clear E-5 and probably more buckets. At least I usually only had one red ship from Hime node failures, and line aboob got me past her safely about 2/3 of the time.
