I feel /jp/ has the most oldfags and I'd be lying if I didn't admit what the person in this video said bothered me.

So I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

It depends on how someone uses it.

And he is right about one thing, the user base of 4chan has changed a lot. Right now people who don't know what proxies are come to 4chan.
By no means I am a expert on internet. But I don't know, 101 internet was known by people back 10 15 years ago. Not only talking about 4chan here.

If we focus solely on 4chan. You don't come here to make friends, you come here to not be judged. You come here to post whatever you want without any restriction on the subject that you think is valid.

And yes /a/ was a shit ages ago, adn yes /b/ was always shit (ID'S raged the fire more).

And the best part about 4chan is, it is actual reality in a virtual place. It is the guy who walks next to you on the street and gives you a weird look because you have headphones on that he doesn't like and thinks that you are a faggot. Only this time that guy is able to post it and you are able to see what he thinks about it without having to stick to a pseudo id or being outcasted because your opinion invalid.

So this guy focuses on the minority of 4chan, the negativity and feelarooni shitposters and decides to tell you what to do with your life.

Does he even realize that the site is more than for what he used it for? All he came here for was memes and anime like a newfag. Jesus knows we don't need any more of his toxic kind and I'm glad he's gone, hopefully his stupid video removes more of the people exactly like him from here. Nope, I am just trying to state that the whole "meme" culture phenoman is not what it is. Reaction images and editation of certain images are a part of the internet itself. And calling them memes is out of place.
I remember talking about this on some irc 6 7 years ago. And the conclusion of it being called meme comes from Dawkins book. So the word meme is actually a meme in itself which makes it ironic.

That is why I said no. Because editing was part of the internet for years and giving it a name and trying to fit it in some kind of "internet" culture phenoman is bullshit.

He talks about how this site is sucking up your time and that everything you post here is meaningless. His explanation as to why this is a bad thing is because 1) being around this community effects your self-esteem in real life, 2) you never create real relationships with anonymous people, 3) you can get all your news through a tumblur feed and not have to wade through the catalog (what is ctrl+F?).

This video is an opinion, because it basically says that browsing 4chan brings the following points:
1. information that you could get more efficiently from other means.
2. time waste.
3. information that isn't generally of use outside of doing that activity (browsing 4chan and learning memes and useless facts in this case).
4. social needs, but without the advantage of creating long-term friends.

+ possibly 5. raw pleasure.
And that if you don't get point 5, then you should leave 4chan. This is a perfectly accceptable opinion.
Now, the video says that if you don't get 5. you should leave, because the other points are "bad" in themselves.

The thing is, the very concept of hobby consists in getting 5., but you can't actually do it without getting point 2 and 3 at the same time. This is valable for every hobby, and as such, it's not a problem.

However, anyone who only browses 4chan for points 1 and/or 4 should genuinely leave. By how that guy is describing the concept of addictivity, it is obvious that he got pleasure (5.) when he was browsing 4chan.

He just chose to get rid of the hobby of browsing 4chan for another hobby, nothing more, nothing less. It's an opinion.

This topic can't be discussed without overlapping into projection, as in taking your personal experience and feelings about it and implying it's true for all or most of the users of 4chan or 4chan itself, but I think it's mostly okay to do that here.

I think his comments about efficiency to obtain media or news are irrelevant. This is not the reason the large majority of people are coming to 4chan and has nothing to do with it. I think it's irrelevant and shouldn't have even been brought up.

I think the claims about self-esteem, self-hate, feelings of futility, and wanting to subsume yourself in a larger group as being precursors to browsing 4chan are unfounded. I don't think there's any correlation between that and people using 4chan. This part was either pure projection (I doubt it, he doesn't sound like that type), or just a dumb idea he had to add to the video. When you actually look at the core people on 4chan it's mostly just young males being normal young males in the situation given.

I think his claims about not creating relationships are irrelevant. Anonymity is a preference, and a capability that allows discussion not possible otherwise. I'm not going to delve deep into this.

I think he's right about addiction. For years the majority of my time spent throughout most of my days was on 4chan, and that's something I really don't like thinking about or admitting. I actually had to force myself in weird ways to indulge in actual hobbies like watching anime or listening to music, just so I won't immediately go back and check 4chan for replies to my posts. I would call it an addiction because I haven't been able to stop even though I want to.

I think he's right about 4chan influencing you. Personally overall I think it was for the better in my case. A bit of elitism being shown to you can go a long way, and can be beneficial if you have the ability to independently think for yourself and judge this elitism whether it be right or wrong. One thing something like 4chan can do is take someone who is naive about the world, and expose them to an extreme amount of thoughts/opinions/information from thousands of people who are typically a bit smarter than average, not to say there isn't plenty of dumbasses. Depending on how you take it in, you can actually come out a better person, you could come out more bitter at everything, become more of an annoying idiot, or just a plain jackass who follows others blindly. Whatever the case I think there's a very small plateau where any improvement possible cuts off, and there's nothing else of value you can take back from it. You're not going to get anything of serious value back, the plateau cuts off where at most you can be more "aware" (for lack of better term) than the average person.

I think he's right about hostility. Anonymity produces people saying what they think. This is a good thing on one hand, and a bad thing when there's nothing but anger-fueled arguments. I argue far too much on 4chan and get stressed over it.

I've been trying to completely cut off 4chan and browse nothing but other imageboards. Most any issue you can have with 4chan disappears if you browse other boards.

You need to really motivate yourself to even entertain yourself if you develop an addiction to 4chan. It's really damaging to your ability to delay gratification.

I was gonna write a long post like this but realized it was a waste of time. There's a line between the people who end up like the guy in this video and people who benefit. It can't seem to be crossed and it's where all the problems with the site come from. That guy thinks all there is to life is consumption, the more the better.

Kigmod is like him. Bitter and angry about his wasted time. Wants to talk about it and complain to everyone else under guise of spreading knowledge.

Also, somebody else pointed out how "you age but the userbase of 4chan doesn't", as in, there's a turnover of established people who just go on to live normal lives or whatever.

I think it's this that leads to a lot of the less overt and conscious alienation from 4chan as you get older. I remember when I was 5 or 6 years younger I felt like I had a lot more in tune with the average user, and this followed through in things like making e-friends from various online games we'd play together, getting to know various people and so on (a lot of whom I stay in contact with to this day).

These days, I have no such inclination to get to know anyone from 4chan.

Likewise, beyond the occasional post and topic (I'll periodically browse a couple of /vg/ generals), I'm more or less done with the place. In defense of the jay and the w, it's about the only place where a significant slice of the userbase are in their mid 20s.

You can't bump your own thread on /v/ anymore. Does that affect all boards or just /v/? It's a step closer to Reddit, next up will be up/down arrows so the only way to bump a thread will be with enough post karma or some shit

I think he made a lot of drama as if 4chan is the worst possible community for you, especially if you are a teen and/or easily influenced.

Teens with low self-esteem and who are socially awkward will always find a social community for themselves where they will feel like they are not alone. Are you aware of Tumblr's social justice warriors? The whole SJW movements is basically that - socially impaired people (mostly teens) with low self esteem participating in a community where they feel accepted. They also hate and criticize everything while glorifying things that don't exist in real life and are practically wasting their time completely.
That guy who made "Why I left 4chan" video says how, when he visits tumblr, he can completely filter all that bullcrap and enjoy his anime pictures while on 4chan he has to go through tons of shitposts that "pull him in into arguments" and in the end he doesn't get what he wants - pictures of cute anime girls. That's bullshit because if he wants what he claims he wants, he can simply go to /c/ or similar, which are basically image dump boards of exactly what he is looking for.
Kids today are introduced to internet when they are still too young. When they discover various internet communities, they are most likely impressed with some because they haven't developed critical thinking to know what's good for them. Basically what I am trying to say it's not just 4chan, there is also Reddit, Tumblr, various forums etc. which also can have a bad influence on the kid. And it's practically unavoidable, unless your parents forbid you any kind of interaction with a computer.

Also on the other side of the coin, normals, socially adept kids have their problem with social sites too. I have a 12 year old cousin who is on facebook 24/7. He non-stop posts his "selfies", checks what other have commented, have "who gets more likes" contests, "who is more popular", basically battling for attention. His whole school does it and modern parents simply don't care. Seems like a child play but this whole "who is prettier" thing going on facebook continues into teenage age. What's going to happen is that he is going to grow into a very insecure person, like most of these kids, seeking validation through facebook likes on his selfies.
So yeah, it's not just quitting 4chan, if you want to become a person that is content with their lives, you have to become independent and know what is good for you. That was always hard and in this day and age, it has become even more harder.
