I enjoyed Kekkon Dekinai Otoko and Dragon Zakura, especially the former, but couldn't really get into Trick, not sure why. Hana Yori Dango and Densha Otoko kept me cringing throughout but I still liked them. I also watched GTO and Last Friends quite a while back, and IIRC Last Friends was alright and GTO really enjoyable.

Would highly recommend Jin, Mahoro Ekimae Bangaichi, and Shinya Shokudo. These shows really pulled me in and I marathon'd them because I couldn't get enough.

Would recommend Iryu if you like "action" and extremely over the top medical cheesiness. Follows a similar formula every episode, which can either be a good or bad thing.

Code Blue is similar to Iryu but too much goes on in every episode and everything feels rushed.

Of course, there is stuff from Kitano like you mentioned, Outrage 2 was even better than the first one.
I think Fukasaku also directed a bunch of Yakuza films (Yakuza Graveyard and Battles Without Honor and Humanity for example).
Then there's Onimasa (Gosha),
Film Noir (Kobayashi),
Chinpira (Aoyama),
Border Line and maybe Scrap Heaven (Sang il-Lee, yes he is Zainichi Korean),
Crows Zero kinda (Miike),
a lot of stuff with Yusaku Matsuda.

When it comes to dramas there's Ninkyo Helper (although it's more light-hearted and probably not what you're looking for, but still great) and the sequel movie - Beautiful World.

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I highly recommend Cruel City, it's Korean, but it's probably the best drama I ever saw and it revolves around their gangsters. Other good Korean movies about/with gangsters are Tough As Iron, A Bittersweet Life (you probably heard of this one), New World, Nameless Gangster, Fate, Die Bad (a lot of stuff by Ryu Seung-wan), the list goes on...

There so much other stuff out there, a lot more obscure, etc, but I can't think of it at the moment, this is just the stuff off the top of my head.


I didn't see Tokyo Family yet, but maybe other Yamada movies? Also seeing how Tokyo Family is a remake of Ozu's Tokyo Story you should try Koreeda's family dramas. He's the closest thing to Ozu.

Also try maybe The Taste of Tea, but this is just a random recommendation.

I watched Crows Zero,it wasn't realistic at all, most of the times comedy. It's just a movie about teenagers for teenagers. The fact that a couple of secondary characters were Yakuza members doesn't make it Yakuza related, they just added it to make it "cooler".

I know what you mean and I don't expect serious actors to act like geinin either. I loved it when e.g. Kanno Miho came to Shabekuri and seemed like such a fun person. She played along and seemed to generally enjoy the show, while Horikita, one of my favorite actresses, had this air of "What the fuck am I doing here?". I was really disappointed.

It's funny how I watched every single one of the episodes you've mentioned so far. It's a pity Shabekuri doesn't get famous people that often though. Most of the time it's some B-class owarai geinin or some B-class idol group. I wish they'd get the great guests SMAP, Arashi, KATTUN & Co. get all the fucking time. They're so wasted on them. I do like Arashi and Kinki though, they can be genuinely funny.

Oh yeah, the episodes with American stars like Cameron Diaz+Tom Cruise, Will Smith+Tommy Lee Jones etc. were interesting too, although the language barrier made for very awkward situations.

Yeah, definitely the language barrier is tough, especially since it feels like the only skit they can really do is, hey, listen to my broken English. They had my favorite, Chloe Moretz, a while back, but that just disappointing. Korean guests (Big Bang, KARA) suffer from a similar problem, since the show's mainly about interesting dialogue, which can't happen if one side can't speak the language.

Arashi was good; I've liked all three of the members who've showed up so far, particularly Nino, although I think he's the most interesting one of the lot anyway.
