Kind of, the translation project over at Shrine Maiden seems to have stopped or some such. There hasn't been much development word on it for a while now. There is however a patch out that translates most of the essential things like spell, item, menu, and enemy names for the most point making for a much better experience. Coupled with pretty good documentation over at the Touhou Wiki site makes for a good experience.

This seems like a good place to post this unrelated question:

I'm interested in learning more about "hacking" games to extract scripts and text for translation purposes. I'm mostly looking for games that aren't currently translated that people think would be nice to have translated. I can work on the "hacking" part and maybe do some translations or two.
Are there any games in particular /jp/ would like to see worked on? I admit I can't guarantee a finished product, but I'd be happy to share what work I've done if I ever get bored of it.

There are so many untranslated good doujin games out there that aren't very text heavy, so why translating such boring shit like GoS?
Is it only because it jumped on the ZUN-popularity-train by putting some 2hu sprites in it? Where is the love for proper games?

Is it just me or is GoS grindy as hell ? You get to some bosses like Cirno/Momiji that just decide to one-shot half your party on the first turn and it's kinda of ridiculous. Maybe you're supposed to have a specific party or something, but for that to work it'd involve even more grinding to get everyone to the same level.

Marisa and Alice (old platformer) is relatively simple, even though it has a patch.
The original Gensokyo Tower Defense is also fairly simple.

Has anyone tried out Tank Rinnosuke in LoT2? His High Boosts, solid stats (except for mostly slightly below average affinities), and First Aid make him essentially a higher investment, higher return version of Meiling as far as I can tell. Not only that, but all of his other skills are pretty good support skills, particularly that Effective Formation Change skill which looks absolutely amazing for rapid nuke switching.

Only problem I see with it is that Rinnosuke probably won't really become a good tank until later into the game where Skill Points are plentiful enough to utilize said High Boosts. Kind of like how Byakuren doesn't actually get good until she's can purchase 4 or so Sutra skills. Once they get going though I imagine they are stupidly good.

I thought about looking at Momiji again as well, but I guess her Tengu Eye skill is still broken as per the Touhou Wiki site. Remilia looks like she's even better than she was in the first game due to a much cheaper cost on Curse of Vlad Tepes and skill arrangement, the only problem here is that she joins later into the game than I would have liked.

For a programming exercise, I wrote an unpacker to extract the art. So to make a translation patch would require writing a packer and having actual translations for it.

Ah, so you did find it, at least.

It is editable, you just need to modify the assembly to allow for strings larger than the original buffer length.

>>12092364
Yes, someone should. I dumped the images on /jp/ when it first came out. There's only like 6 or so to translate.

>> No.12092381

>>12092369
I didn't say it wasn't possible, just that it wouldn't be easy to do. Modifying the length of the executable is dangerous as far as I know, since you break jump locations. Writing the unpacker was my first time dealing with raw assembly, so I'm not an expert on it.

And I'm not sure if I would do a translation patch for that game either. It was more an exercise for myself since it was a simple game. I would much rather do Rhythm Carnival! Scarlet.

>> No.12092386

>>12092369
care to upload them?, I'm willing to pay to someone for translating them.

>> No.12092393

>>12092381
Alright, I mostly just mentioned it since you said you did it as a programming exercise. I've looked at a lot of games, and it's actually very common to have dialogue in the executable. Labyrinth of Touhou (both of them) is another example that does this. So it's actually really important to have a tool that can handle that crap.

>Modifying the length of the executable is dangerous as far as I know, since you break jump locations.
Jumps are relative. So as long as you aren't adding new data to the middle of the exe or anything, it's fine. What you do is find a PE editor and tack on a new section to the end, e.g. an extra 500kb. That gives you plenty of room for new strings, none of which will ever be referenced by existing code because it's brand new.

That's what I did for ThLaby, so yes, this approach works.

>> No.12092413

Ah, I hadn't thought about adding new data at the end. But how would you make the code refer to the new, translated strings? Or would you overwrite the old string?

>So it's actually really important to have a tool that can handle that crap.
What tool do you use?

>> No.12092439

>>12092413
Wrote it myself. Uses the Distorm python interface to disassemble the exe.
http://code.google.com/p/distorm/wiki/Python

>But how would you make the code refer to the new, translated strings? Or would you overwrite the old string?
You can overwrite the old string if it's short enough. But that's the trivial case. If the string doesn't fit in the original buffer, you just change the assembly.

So if you have something like

MOV DWORD PTR DS:[EAX*4+ECX+4],OFFSET THLabyrinth2_out.00CA9D04 ; ASCII "Natural"

You'd change it to something like

MOV DWORD PTR DS:[EAX*4+ECX+4],OFFSET THLabyrinth2_out.013432F4

Where 013432F4 is an address in the new section. And you add the string there, and have all the room you need. Then the next string you add goes after the end of that, etc.

>> No.12097506

>>12097366
It is a widenyo clone. I've never played Widenyo, but I believe it does not anything like the spell card attacks.
Every character has 2 attacks; a normal attack and a spell card attack. They have different power stats and range; typically with the spell attack being both more powerful and longer range. However the spell card attack drains 20% (I think) of the unit's max life, and with the ever present wind, you can't use them freely.

Beyond that I think it's the same. There's serious balance issues and a smaller cast, but it's reasonably entertaining. A decent enough time waster.

There's a partial translation patch somewhere on shrinemaiden as well.
