It'll probably be a lot like Denkigai Matsuri, i.e. a smaller-scale Comiket but for licensed goods. Innocent Grey is making awesome stuff for it again, though, so I envy you for being there.

Continuing on AXL's Racial Merge - for me dialogue reads better than average, the pace is fair to kept events moving along. Do like support characters kept on being an involved part of process rather than tossed out half way. Haven't complete it so don't have a wholesome impression of it.

Also starting ninetail's Amatsukaze (天ツ風), hoping for some nice ninja actions (LOL card battles) and something a little different?

Finished the main route of Rance 9.
It was pretty good, I like how it was basically a direct sequel of Rance 4, had to wait 20 years to see all the foreshadowing in Rance 4 finally focused on.
Though damn it's a testorenone heavy game, lots of male characters and unlike most of the time they aren't turned into a joke most of the time but actually get some good development.
The new heroines are great too, Rance himself kind of took a backstep and in the end it's mostly a Patton game but Patton is cool so that's okay.

Well now to finish the remaining routes and start either Ikusa Megami or Baldr Sky Zero 2

Finished Zero 2.

It was excellent, but strangely, it's not making me feel much of a withdrawal. Might be the late kind, I don't know.
Anyway, behind the writing that's hard to digest at times and the pacing that's often too slow or too fast and not very Baldr-like, it has a mighty good plot that doesn't leave many questions unanswered and satisfying developments that are more than enough to make one keep on reading, though some of them might require some suspension of disbelief.
What really captured my positive attention was how Marelle's route handled the important content of the previous routes, especially compared to how Sora's route did it. It seems like such a small thing, but I really liked how Ed wasn't the only one that actually did stuff to find out what's what, unlike Final Kou. While Ed and Marelle were out trying to figure out what they are and what Rasayana wants with them, Kou and Rain were gathering info about nanomachines and Church 22, Kei and Sakura made a plot against Le Partelle, Fran and Shizel went after WALRUS and the state government, Rena researched Neunzehn and Scavenger, etc. Nothing boringly convenient like what Kou had, just straightforward independent information gathering and exchange.
The gameplay improved since Zero 1, but it's still not something to write home about. It's satisfying with the right setup, but I'd rather play the Dives instead.

Finally, I'll just state that I'll never look at Neunzehn the same way again.

I imagine that it's really apples to oranges, for me Masada's prose was a bit easier than Muramasa's usage of old kanji (then again t may be because I enjoyed reading Dies Irae a bit more than Muramasa so lookups weren't as much of a chore to go through) , then again I've experienced odd chuuni prose before from reading F/SN (though it's really shit compared to Masada's stuff).

There's not really any such thing as an objective measure of difficulty. It depends entirely on what vocab and grammar you happen to have already been exposed to. If spend all your time reading high-level economics textbooks, you'll probably struggle reading a relatively "easy" fantasy novel just because the style and vocabulary is completely different. Extreme example, but you get my point.

Well think about it this way, when an unprofessional translator takes a work and translates it you lose the prose and nuance of the text, same for professionals (though I've yet to see a pro VN company do any quality work). It's fine if you don't mind reading dry text that probably reads terribly (I'm counting for most cases). For example, MM's translation of F/SN is God-awful because their poor work paints Shirou as a sexist with the comment about "Ayako should be molested to remember her feminity" as an instance. VN's are just 100x more enjoyable to read when you know nihongo, also you can tell the real worth of a VN by how it's originally written rather than a bastardization done by a fellow neckbeard.

Well sure, but that's why you study and practice until you reach proficiency. There a lot of eroges that are rather simple to read anyway so you work your way up. If you make the time for it you're well rewarded by now being able to enjoy untranslated works and having the novelty of being able to now go to the nipp district of your city and barter for chickens.
How most translations go is that the text is machine translated and the translator makes sense of the resulting babble, which of course can be very divorced from an original line's intention or tone. For simpler titles it can pass but for the more difficult (and more rewarding titles) it just doesn't cut it.

You don't really have to be a nihongo expert to get things out of untranslated works that you wouldn't from translated ones. I'm not even talking about bad translations or complicated prose, there's just things that don't get conveyed in english, in bad cases your whole impression of a character can be ruined etc.
I'm not elitist about translations and I've translated things myself but reading something untranslated and reading the same thing translated is such a different experience even with a translation that has as little errors as possible.

Finally finished BSZ 2.
Have to say that Marels route was damn great experience and now I feel very satisfied. All the buildup for it payed off, although it still lacked the impact like the Jihad moment of Dive2, well the reveal came pretty close though. Still my second favorite route in the Baldr series after Soras route. Started also somewhat liking the system in Zero but still isn't quite as fun as Dives system. Also liked how they handled Kou on Marel route too and his relationship with Ed he had, still can never look it the sameway after you learn the truth about Ed. Everything ending in huge drinking party also felt somewhat so fitting for the Zero series.

Most motor racing fiction is kind of garbage in general. Usually it's better experienced through video games and the real thing on TV.

I mean generally the advantage you get with a VN is a combination of both visuals and long format text that wouldn't fit into a broadcast window or a comic but it's difficult to pull off a sufficient visual and a race broadcast is already anywhere from one to twenty four hours of heavy exposition because you don't exactly play by play driving down a road the entire time.

Well, there's an important thing to remember. For example, I think most people in this thread are able to understand Sakurai's prose, but I'm not sure how many would be able to decently translate it to english. When that "new content" equates to acquiring them through limited print run magazines, clearly there's something wrong here. Finished Baldr Force.
The gameplay took some time to get used to(specially the movement, I hope it's different in Sky), but after that it was surprisingly fun. I found the best weapons for my preferred playstyle really early on, so I ended up only unlocking about half of them though. I also wish it had a very hard option, because other than some bosses it was a little easy.
I really enjoyed the way they presented the routes, with the first 2 exploring the revenge issue, then going down the rabbit hole with the next 2 and the mind controlling chip, with the final 2 being about the brain project and leviathan.
Overall it managed to be really entertaining, overcoming the issue of being a really old game with crappy production values.

>Why would anyone assume that someone is using anything else more than mecab/jparser?

I don't believe that either are acceptable. The problem with them is that they're not really learning tools, their usage is more like a way to avoid actual learning but still get the reward of reading the material you wanted to read. Learning involves some element of strain, your memory needs to look at something and dig deep to try to recall a connection to it. These tools take that away because it takes away the strain aspect of learning, you just hover the cursor over the text and it instantly pops up and bypasses the recall process.

It'll allow you to fumble your way through some VNs by splicing words, but most of the information slips out of your head as soon as you processed it. The process of manually looking up a word forces you to look at it quite a bit, so your mind has plenty of time to form a solid connection to this word. Most importantly though, the mind has no real reason to focus on the actual Japanese word when the English definitions will pop up instantaneously, so your mind basically throws the actual Japanese into the back of your mind and focuses all of its attention on the English definition. The end result of all this is that you can read VNs in a way that's essentially splicing together a series of English definitions that are modified by either guesses that based on context or by whatever miscellaneous grammar you recognize.

Basically, it becomes a Pidgin language. You're not reading Japanese, but not you're not really reading English either, it's a simplified, makeshift mix of the two that allows you to read VNs but has very little long-term benefit for any other purpose.

>> No.12088384

>>12088375
Why are you assuming someone would instantly scroll over every time instead of just using it to check something they don't know?

That seems strange to me when its faster to just use it when you need to. And unless you're using some japanese to japanese dictionary like alc.co the definitions you'd receive by looking up a word in a japanese to english dictionary either online or a hard copy would be the same since the online version is based off that wwwdjic or w/e and they got their content from scanning in dictionary entries.

Are you trolling because it seems very slow and useless to spend the extra time looking something up when you can just use a text hooker to get the information much faster I mean there is no special process going on as you flip through pages in a dictionary. You can achieve the same long term effect by spending the same amount of time thinking of the word you just found the definition for by going over it in your head from a hard copy versus jparser.

I'm sorry I'm new to these threads, but with advice like this it sounds like you're trying to steer new learners away from the language by subjecting them to drudgery. Maybe what I should have expected from /jp/.

While I agree on most points you made, its not completely useless for learning. I found its much easier to learn word both in terms of its real meaning [which you cannot infer simply from looking into dictionary, you need to know how its actually used to understand it] and ability to recall it. So if you combine JParser + anki and keep adding new words into anki, you will be fine.

I'm sorry, I should have clarified in my post. I'm referring to using a Japanese-Japanese Dictionary. I don't believe that anything past the most simple words should be learned by using definitions that are outside of the language that you're attempting to learn. The whole process just makes it harder for yourself in the long-term because you will never be able to fully understand a Japanese word if every Japanese word that you know is bound to English definitions and can't be understood without using the English words that you have glued to that Japanese word through rote memorization.

Of course some degree of Japanese-English is necessary, but I believe that this is only appropriate in the context of looking up the simple words that are used to describe the more complex word that you are looking up in the first place.

This is more time consuming, but the rewards are far greater. For example, maybe you went to look up one word, but in the process of reading its definition you've now looked up several other words that were simple but new to you and you've acquired 8 additional words to add to your review deck. So it's 9 words for the price of one, all while learning to understand the word from the perspective of how the Japanese understand that word, rather than by stamping an English definition on it that will come with all of the associated and in this case troublesome English connotations that all words have. Learning vocabulary like that is a juggling act where you constantly bounce between two different languages and it severely limits true comprehension of what you're reading.

>> No.12088420

Is it that hard to comprehend that different people study shit differently? Some people have to grind down the dictionaries, while the others can just look up the meaning once and remember it through mnemonics.
